They are a fantastic airline – in my opinion, far superior to Emirates (in economy) – and they are affordable, too.

Far better business class too from the regions.

Was expected, I doubt they could get the A318 out of LCY with 100 seats.

Actually, yes they could if they wanted. The A318 is likely to be used for European routes in the future, with around the 100 seat+ mark, I know at least one airline considering them, and not for particularly short routes either.

BA has long been expected to order the E-jets though.

Unless they’re new aircraft. No idea if they have any on order though…

They’re seeking 8 aircraft on the used market, 4 for the initial launch, followed by another 4 over time. No existing bases will be reduced.

    Good on EI.

Wonder how BA will react becuase if EI have the backing of BA, FR might aswell go and whistle becuase its tough. If, EI has BA backing, will BA narow down its Network at LGW, and let EI grow at LGW, thus BA transfers all it passangers onto EI LGW Network and just keeps Long Haul.

I don’t think so.. EI is not playing in the partnership game here, they want to cash in on the London yields for themselves. Getting involved with another airline will undermine their business plan. Admittedly BA recently cancelled LGW-ZRH, and it could be suggested that this is a replacement service, but my guess is this will just get BA’s back up as they were trying to reduce capacity on the LON-ZRH route due to falling demand.

(i wish them the best of luck, as that aint happening soon)

I wouldn’t be too sure this time.

Good for Aer Lingus I hope it works out ok for them and not make them go into money troubles.

Be good to see a EI machine at LGW again.

    James

Well, go any day now and you can see an EI machine at LGW. They already operate DUB from there.

As for it not making them go into money troubles, I think they’ve been very succesful at that without Gatwick, I’m sure it’ll just help it on it’s way. Hopefully the last one out will turn the lights off!

I suspect their bully tactics similar to those employed against easyJet will reappear on the Knock route.

You mean they launched a service in competition against an airline?!:eek: And they happen to have lower costs and lower fares so EZY jumped off the route. Any airline is free to reduce their costs and fares to match Ryanair, so let’s not suggest it’s all just bully tactics….they don’t operate the route at a loss in order to dominate it, it’s not like BA with their Virgin/Skytrain campaigns! Rant over…back to topic….

Oh, and RYR don’t currently serve NOC from LGW.

Well, Solihull messed up my 2008 achievement last night, which should have been to have produced forecasts to successfully lead to a runway extension being approved in the UK, but perhaps that gives me my 2009 goal for January!

What plans have they got then?

The following are some of their plans:

    i) Continue to operate as two seperate airlines, with seperate an unique product offerings, with EI retaining a higher level of on board service focusing on business travellers and those needing the connectivity offered by a legacy carrier, including frequent flyer scheme etc;
    ii) Continue with EI’s long haul operations;
iii) Ring fence slots at LHR and effectively hand these over to the Irish government to be used exclusively by EI. This will include the removal of BFS-LHR and the reinstatement of SNN-LHR.

FR will be ruthless when it comes to cutting costs at EI and making the business more efficient, but the intention is to retain a seperate product between the two airlines.

If you think that this will drive out competition then bear in mind that FR is one of the only airlines in the world that truly operates in a Contestable Market theory, that is to say that it is the threat of entry which keeps the fares low, not the actual presence of a competitor. This would be applied to EI too, and therefore whilst there may be less competitors on some routes, the fares will still be low to ensure nobody else comes in to steal market share with lower operating costs/fares.

The Commission are on rocky ground with this one. Permitting mergers between carriers such as TAP and PGA set a precedent which they have then gone against on this takeover proposal. In Portugal these were pretty much the only two regular scheduled carriers too.

I love the general hatred of RYR that comes through on topics like this (Skymonster, IF IL62), yet they are one of the only airlines delivering growth in Europe, and still consistently delivering profit. They have reduced the cost of travel substantially, and if you’ve ever bought a cheap ticket with them then you cannot criticise their strategy as you’ve subscribed to it. If you haven’t flown with them out of principle, but do like the fact you can fly with BA to Europe for £50 then stop and think about why you can now fly with BA for £50? It’s not because the management thought this would be a generous thing to do..it’s because they were forced to by the threat of competition from airlines such as RYR and EZY. What these airlines, and RYR in particular have done is to remove the cream from the top of profits, applying economic theory to this they have removed the ability of airlines to make Super-Normal profits (i.e. inflated profits) and instead make only Normal profits (i.e. a fair amount). This has opened up air travel to a lot more people, and why shouldn’t those people have the right to travel?

A really nice bunch of experienced people, this is terrible news, especially in the run up to Christmas. It shows how deep the recession is really biting.
Let’s hope that something of the operation can be salvaged from the administrators.

    Afraid not..

UK charter and wet-lease operator Flightline has ceased trading, with all 235 personnel being made redundant.

Flightline, based at London Southend Airport, went into adminstration yesterday. Accountancy firm KPMG was appointed as the administrating company.

KPMG has identified the administrators as Jane Moriarty and Myles Halley. It adds that, following their appointment, the company’s air operator’s certificate was suspended and it has stopped trading.

While a few employees will stay on to assist the administrators, the remaining staff have been made redundant.

“We are now undergoing an orderly wind-down of business, with the aim of realising the value of any of the remaining assets for the benefit of creditors,” says Moriarty.

Flightline primarily operated British Aerospace 146 and Boeing MD-83 aircraft.

Well Ek wouldn’t let you book a whole flight package in one like that ie LHR-DXB-JFK. They dont allow you to back track!

Well, if you were sad enough to want to back track to get to NYC, then you could always book each sector individually.

You need to avoid budget airlines. Fly with a mainline airline or a flag carrier and they’ll get you to your final destination. It may be on a ship, but they’ll get you there! 😀 :diablo:
