This is a really massive expansion for Qatar Airways, though.

I know I’ve asked this before, but could they be planning on diversifying into the aircraft leasing business, a la Icelandair?

I wouldn’t have thought so, from what I know of their strategy it is to follow the lead of Emirates in exploiting the good location these carriers have for hub operations. Hubbing passengers is usually low yield and not so worthwhile, and for an airline to almost rely solely on this could eb considered dangerous….but the advantage Qatar and Emirates have over other airlines is that they pay relatively little for fuel in their home nations and so can increase the yield. Therefore this makes them hard to compete against by direct services (in terms of price anyway) and so there is a very large Europe/Asia (and Europe/Africa, Africa/Asia) still to be tapped into. These airliens are big players into the UK when compared to the scale of their operations elsewhere in Europe, if they continue to expand by this method it won’t take long before they need all these aircraft.

I have had this very discussion quite recently with a friend of mine who refuses to leave feedback for a buyer until they themselves have received feedback. I am in two minds on this one – if when selling stuff on ebay payment received quickly for the item then I will leave feedback as soon as I dispatch the item. If however the buyer takes an age to send payment – I chased one buyer up repeatedly for six weeks (and not many ebay sellers would be that patient) then I would wait to leave feedback until they have left me feedback.

Yes, but which part of the transaction is completed first? The feedback should run in that order in my opinion. Even if you send a cheque, many sellers will not post the item until after it has cleared. And as a seller, if somebody has paid by paypal immediately then surely they deserve NOTHING but positive feedback.

To give two examples where I would have liked to have given neutral feedback at least..

    1) I bought an IT item through buy-it-now, paid immediately and then waited 3 weeks to receive the item and had to chase for it to be sent.
    2) I bought two items, through buy-it-now from the same seller who offered a discount on postage for multiple items. Through my own error I paid for each seperatly, thereby preventing me from getting the discount. So I e-mialed the seller suggesting he repay the discount straight back into my paypal account, I have never heard from him since.

I have not yet received feedback from these, despite paying instantly and being a good buyer, but on both accounts I feel I have reason to leave more truthful feedback.

I just realised you are off to Prague and I said Budapest..well either way..find an internet cafe and then you can choose your seats in advance!

I recommend that you register at BA.com so that you can check in from there. This will allow you to pick your seats, I think check in opens 24 hours in advance for Club and 12 hours in advance for economy. If you can get to an internet cafe in Budapest then you can check in and select your seats for the economy leg…and try and select the seats adjacent to the 3rd exits, these have loads of leg room. For club, do not be fooled into selecting bulkhead seats, these are actually more cramped due to not having room to put your feet under a seat infront.

OK, here goes. One of me looking really moody and the other is my cheesy work photo (from the website) which has been cropped massively so as to be able to upload it. Neither of them around planes as you can see, but I think my work photo counts as aviation related so i can get round it that way.

Personally I think Rolls-Royce engines are the best. For me, I find it slightly comforting to look out of an aircrafts window and see the Rolls-Royce badge looking at me. On a development note, has anyone ever seen the turbofan they developed with variable pitch fan blades? If I remember correctly, it was designed to cut down noise for inner-city airports but I guess was shelved. A company called Renishaw used to have the engine in their plant, but I am not sure if it is still there.

Was that the engine originally under develpment for the MD-90 when it was being conceived?

Cheers guys. I hope we can all show some self-discpline about the ‘issue’. Sorry if I seemed like I was having a go…as I tried to get across in my last post before the stickies disappeared, I wasn’t having a go at the mods and realised how difficult it was.

Well, from what I can see RR could well be producing the best engines going, and I think a lot of the airlines share the same view (before selecting the GE to power the 777-200LR/300ER many Trent operators wrote to Boeing asking them to choose RR..however in this case I think GE were willing to put A LOT more money into the programme).

I laugh that somebody has mentioned an uncontained engine failure on a RR Trent, because there are numerous examples of similar incidents invloving P&W and GE large fans aswell!

In general the airline orders for engines speak for themselves, and indeed I think RR are renowned for being the leader in R&D for their engines. This goes back to the RB211 which was revolutionary when launched (and nearly bankrupted RR before the Government stepped in following a few teething problems with the engines’ development). P&W have certainly had a rough time in recent years, and RR has certainly edged to push GE at the top…without sitting down and working it out I am not sure who has the larger market share for large fans, but it wouldn’t suprise me if it was RR, and as I say, the orders surely speak for themselves. I honestly think that is why more airlines haven’t ordered the 777-200LR/300ER.
