    The thread I would like to open is this, what old generation commerical scheduled airliners (passenger) can we still be able to book a flight on.
    For example is there anywhere in the world where we can we still book a seat on a commercial scheduled operating Boeing 707, 747SP or llyushin 18 ? to name but a few vintage aircraft.

    I think a trip to Iran would cover all of these particular types.

    I think it is interesting to see that what some have got in their best, others have in their worst. I think it has to be a reflection of ‘on the day experience’, but for example, Andy has CDG (T2) in his worst, but I found it very good when transferring there recently, whilst he has T1 at LHR in his best, and whilst I haven’t flown through there for 5 years, each time I did fly out of there was always the same experience, long long queues round the check-in hall and BA and bmi staff running up and down the line desperately looking for passengers who should be on the next departing flights (accepting much of the BA congestion has been removed now anyway).

    My worst 5 would be:
    Rio de Janeiro – absolutely awful terminal, extremely unwelcoming and cold kind of building, and once airside it was extremely uncomfortable;
    London Heathrow – both T3 and T1 have always been nightmares for me, long queues, dark and dated in T3. However, I have some flights booked from T5 later in the year so I hope it will reprieve itself;
    Southampton – The airside area is just chaos these days at busy times, it’s not pleasant especially if you pick up a delay and have to sit in it longer;
    Nairobi – to be fair it was sort of OK, just dusty and a bit bleak, but the dust may be as much to do with location as poor cleanliness;
    London Stansted – Only really because I don’t like being moved around to remote piers, they sort of trap you and you’re not able to move freely backwards and forwards, it means you have to plan ahead and then get caught out of you incur a delay (which Air Berlin did for me for 4 hours!).

    My best 5:
    London City – accepting they’ve had some security issues over the last few weeks, it’s always been an easy experience, made easier by the majority of travellers being frequent travellers and therefore already having their jackets off and laptops out as you pass security;
    Lima – very clean, modern and efficient;
    Cusco – highly efficient for a developing country’s regional airport (accepting it is a big tourist airport);
    Barbados Adams – Yeh, check-in with an open fronted terminal, how cool is that?
    Plymouth City Airport – the smallones have a distinct advantage with respect to queues, cleanliness and friendliness, and PLH has to be near the top for all of these.

    Boeing cannot be held responsible for the interior configuration choice of the airlines 😉 🙂

    Actually they can, at least in the first instance. They are forcing airlines to buy from a ‘catalogue’ of economy options, i.e. when you get your new aircraft Boeing will supply the economy section. Airlines can specify their own premium seating though and have that installed by Boeing.

    I don’t think those pdf sketches are what you are after.
    The cut-away dwgs in Flight International are what you want, but I don’t have a link, sorry.

    I’m not sure they’ll help as they don’t include measurement normally. I know the PDF’s aren’t to scale but do give indications of measurements etc.

    I’m afraid i can’t think of another source off-hand.

    Highland Airways stop taking bookings. Seeking funds urgently.

    Say it all….

    Scotland’s Highland Airways seeks urgent financial support
    Alan Dron, London (26Jan10, 09:50 GMT, 254 words)

    Scottish regional carrier Highland Airways is urgently seeking new investment after admitting that it faces a cashflow problem.

    In a statement, the Inverness-based company says its position has been “recently exacerbated” by the severe winter and a reduction in flying.

    “The board has been seeking new investment and has been in discussion with several parties in recent weeks. Negotiations are ongoing with a potential investor that provides an excellent way forward for the company,” it says.

    “The outcome of these discussions should be judged within days rather than weeks. In the meantime the company continues to trade normally.”

    Highland’s commercial director, Basil O’Fee, says: “Our medium-term prospects are quite good but we need help in the short term.”

    More potential investors have come forward in the past couple of days. It is likely that a financial solution will draw on several of these sources rather than a single entity, says O’Fee: “We’re anticipating we need 48 hours to come to a conclusion.”

    Highland Airways has stopped selling tickets in the meantime. O’Fee says: “We’re not going to take bookings today until we are assured that our future is more secure.”

    The company operates a series of public service obligation routes in the Scottish highlands and islands, plus a Cardiff-Anglesey service in Wales, and corporate staff shuttle services. Its fleet comprises two British Aerospace Jetstream 41s, seven Jetstream 31s and a single Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander.

    It also operates two light Cessna aircraft on fishery and pollution patrols on behalf of Marine Scotland, a government agency.

    Does anyone know where I can get a technical drawing of a 747 fuselage. It must have measurements on and preferably show sections and bulkheads etc…

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Kind Regards

    Mark

    Okay, maybe not quite the idea of the thread, but what might have been!

    And would have had Rolls-Royce RB211’s too, they were the launch customer for the type with that engine, but it obviously never got that far 😡

    I don’t think the factory paint scheme shows the aircraft to best advantage, either.

    Until now I’ve thought the aircraft looked awful ‘in real life’, but these have changed my mind, so I think you’re right.

    Bear in mind John Dedman won’t be in office for much longer, hopefully!

    No, but if he’s replaced by a conservative, their Aviation policy is more penal let’s not forget, especially in relation to the London region.

    With any luck he will be out,

    Thing is should he rush it through and say no could Stobart’s call a judicial review, as an ex-FoE campaigner and with FoE’s views on airport expantion well known surely this puts his position as the guy with the casting vote is serious question.

    Can he really be fair,

    I’d have thought they may have a case to take it to the High Court and then potentially through JR if they felt it had been influenced unfairly by personal opinion.

    As to the plane. Yes, many forum members (and I too) would enjoy a J31 jaunt. But many business travellers will I think still go for preference to BHX or LHR to hop on a much larger plane, and use a carrier than has much higher frequency.

    Frequency may be a driver in such a decision, but aircraft type is unlikely to play an influencing role, especially if someone can travel from an Airport which is 20 mins from home rather than 45 mins. Whilst the J31 has a wing strut pocking through the middle of the cabin, it is no worse really than flying on a J41, and Eastern (and BA before them) have proved that high fare paying passengers have no concerns using that type when convenience plays a part.

    I can’t read all of the writing under each big title, but I can see that under ‘Loo’ near the back it goes on to say “for mile-high club”.

    It’s a cool livery, well done Kulula for something a bit different.

    Might give them a try. I figure you would need to be quick before they disappear.

    Yeh, and book a day return, infact return on the following flight…that way you’re likely to get both ways too.
