Im surprised Ryanair is starting to fly to Gdansk. I remember reading an article which had Michael O’Leary saying “Who wants to fly to Gdansk? Theres nothing there!” I wonder what made him change his mind? šŸ™‚

Somebody probably pointed out to him after that statement that there is nothing at any Ryanair destination (except a long bus journey to that ‘nearby’ city), which probably pursuaded him to operate it šŸ˜‰ :diablo: .

I’d imagine there’s quite an extensive flight test programme to go through first. The first Concorde flew in March 1969 – first passenger service didn’t depart until 1976…

There were a large number of reasons (including political and technological) for the delays in Concorde coming into commercial service and in actual fact the A380 will not take so long to certify (as would be expected for any modern airliner). 4 test aircraft will be used for 2000 hours of flying time, so should pass by relatively quickly. The aircraft is due in servcie next year.

Most of Phuket Air’s fleet grounded amid safety concerns
Leithen Francis, Singapore (13Apr05, 08:00 GMT, 473 words)

Phuket Air’s flight schedule is in disarray today as 11 of its 16 aircraft are grounded following a call from Thailand’s Transport Ministry for the carrier’s fleet to be inspected following operational incidents that raised safety concerns.

Executive VP Capt Chawanit Chiamcharoenvut tells ATI Phuket Air has only one of its two Boeing 737-200s, one of its eight Boeing 747-200/300s, its single Boeing 757-200 and two of its five NAMC YS-11s operating today.

Of the seven grounded 747-200/300s, at least four are in Indonesia undergoing heavy maintenance checks at GMF AeroAsia, says Chawanit.

Phuket Air has had to cancel some flights and is offering refunds in accordance with international regulations, says Chawanit, who adds that today the carrier has services to some domestic destinations as well as to London Gatwick.

He says Thailand’s Ministry of Transport this week has been inspecting Phuket Air’s aircraft – two per day on average – and insists the inspections apply to other airlines too, ā€œnot just Phuket Airā€.

Chawanit also says the carrier’s ā€œsafety is up to standardā€. The Bangkok Post newspaper today quotes Thailand’s deputy transport minister, Phumtham Vejjayachi, as saying the carrier could lose its licence if it fails to improve its operations.

This week’s aircraft inspections were sparked by incidents earlier this month in which Phuket Air 747-200/300s experienced mechanical troubles that came to the attention of passengers as well as civil aviation authorities in Thailand and overseas.

The latest incident reportedly occurred on 9 April, when a 747-200 that was due to depart from Bangkok for Amsterdam was found to have had a hydraulic problem. It was the same aircraft that experienced an engine problem on 6 April soon after leaving London Gatwick. On that occasion the crew decided to return to London Gatwick rather than continue operating the aircraft on only three of the four engines.

On 3 April there was an incident involving another Phuket Air 747, which was delayed at Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates en route to London Gatwick. The 747 in question completed a scheduled refuelling stop in Sharjah and was about to take off with 366 passengers on board when fuel spilled from the vent of a surge tank.

ā€œAt that time, a few passengers…panicked, misunderstood [the situation] and [incorrectly] screamed fire,ā€ says Chawanit.

ā€œA flight attendant then reported to the pilot the situationā€ on board the aircraft so ā€œthe pilot then decided to return to the parking bayā€ and have the aircraft undergo a ā€œthorough examinationā€ in Sharjah while the passengers waited in hotels. The next morning passengers boarded the aircraft for London Gatwick, he says.

Some news reports in Thailand say the UK CAA inspected the aircraft upon arrival and discovered inoperative evacuation safety lights. These reports say the CAA let the aircraft return to Bangkok but authorities insisted that no passengers be carried.

There would be logic if any of them were in Star..Skyteam is the alliance you must be thinking of.

I haven’t read any of the other thread cos I knew they’d ordered them before that thread went up.

I may have to apologise, sat here thinking about the thread and I have realised I may have misunderstood where you were coming from…I now take it you mean that alliance partners are following each other generally.

as I mentioned in the Korean order thread:

Some are saying that if one Star Alliance member orders the 787 others in the alliance will follow.
CO were the first, Korean have now followed and now it looks almost certain now that NWA are next. Perhaps there’s logic to this theory?

Ren, I really don’t think those sorts of comments are helpful either – I wasn’t going to say any more but seeing as you decided to kick back now I will as I have to answer that accusation…

Despite what you might think, I do not wish Martin or anyone else involved in the project any malice, and I would be very pleased for those who founded it if the airline does indeed succeed.

However, I have an opinion, indeed I HAD an opinion when this project was first announced publicly, which I didn’t express here or elsewhere simply because I was away at the time (and may not have done on this forum anyway had I realised that the founder was an active member too). As you will have seen from reading this thread and the thread on PPRuNe there are varying opinions about Alpha1, including some who share my view. There are many larger challenges facing its owners, particularly with the recent delay announcement, than dealing with the comments of a few nay-sayers on a forum. If they can’t deal with a few folks saying “I don’t think it’ll work” then I doubt theyll have a chance when it comes to the business of running an airline on a day to day basis, particularly on the day when the wheels fall off.

So, I genuinely do wish the owners of Alpha1 well and if its a success say a year from now I will be pleased to admit I was wrong. But that doesn’t stop me having a different opinion about the chances of success, which I believe I am free to express in a country like ours.

    Andy

Here, here, I hold my hands up to this opinion too.

Time please ladies and gentlemen, this was a thread based on fact i pressume, so lets hope nothing else comes of it and that Martin succeeds.

I don’t think there is need for this comment. We are all entitled to our opinions, as confirmed by the moderators. I know Martin uses the forum but I don’t think there are any comments on this thread which are any different to discussions which would take place if it were another airline in the same situation, infact I think it is fair to say that the comments may have been toned down to reflect Martin’s use of this forum. There are a large selection of people on this forum that work in the industry and using this knowledge people have drawn various conclusions and opinions

I agree that we all wish Martin success, but it doesn’t take away that many threads come from fact and then the purpose of a forum is to allow people to express opinions based on these facts. You just have to look at how expressive people on this forum were when a new premium airline proposal was discussed on here only a couple of weeks ago…Alpha1 never got so much doubt expressed about it despite the fact that most examples of airlines such as Alpha1 have been unsuccesful. We don’t know the reasons for the delay, but I don’t think anybody has directly tried speculating on this, and we are all waiting for the facts to come forward.
