Poolewe?
Now that really is a wild guess!

Thanks for that, Newforest, I did wonder what the second one was for but I was busy sorting things out so I never got eound to taking a look…:o
Nice to be useful, instead of making silly remarks, for once.

The weather forecast for Wednesday, Thursday & Friday is rain, more rain and even more rain. 😀
Given the closeness to Cambridge, it’s pretty safe to say that there will also be wind, wind and wind!
Adrian
Oh dear… 😮 Still, that’s far too much fun to go back and edit!
Like the photography entendres in the Wikipedia link (Finbarr Saunders on Wiki[edia… Who’d a’ thunk it?), might save a few for future use…
Adrian
I must confess that I’ve trolled through the photographic section long enough to be getting a bit blase about all the great photos here (sad, but true! :o).
However, your monchrome P-40 is a blinder! Did you frame it like that intentionally, or crop it? Either way, it’s different, and a beauty1
Adrian
Aaaargh!
Do I drool over the tug driver, the David Brown or the Meatbox? Help!
Bother… I’d be very tempted to go with my period cameras, but I’d be taking places from people who would be entitled to describe themselves as photographers.
Adrian
Nice ‘tache!
Seriously, thnks for putting me right – I read it years ago, and understood that it had happened more than once.
Adrian
(wondering which foot he will put in it next…)
Only this week I have been reading about a Porsche that was badly damaged in a fatal accident which killed a well known racing driver in the 50’s. It was “restored” many years later by grafting on the back half of the frame from a later Porsche and was raced in that form in Historic races for some time.
I know I’m a bit late to the event, but I thought I’d throw the D-Type Jag into the equation.
The D-Type has a monocoque chassis, and an enormous sub-frame assembly that bolts in almost the whole length of the monocoque. As ever with bent racing cars, the factory chopped and changed parts from one car to another, as did later owners, monocoques got seperated from sub-frames and various D-Types have been reconstructed over the years from the bits. This means that there are several cars that have been allocated an ID on the basis of the sub-frame. Add to this several cars given an ID based on the monocoque, and you can see this coming… Yes, there are rebuilt D-Types out there that share an ID with another car because one has been built round an original sub-frame and one round the monocoque.
Anyway, the important bit is Rivet’s note – more details would be nice!

Thanks for the clarification, Mark12. In which case I think your remark – third paragraph, about not trying to cheat – is entirely fair, and I applaud the chap for his honesty. Good luck to him – the best way to dispel my cynicism is probably to roar over my head with the engine at full chat, hope he gets that far!
Please accept my grovelling apology for misrepresenting your very descriptive remark.
Adrian:o
I would consider this a provisional ID.
Neither thin nor robust. 🙂
Mark
Thanks Mark, that’s given me a good laugh!
I am, I’m afraid to admit in your company, a bit of a cynic about “data plate” rebuilds (yes, I’ve read your posts and I’m aware that Spitfires didn’t have them, but that seems to be the accepted terminology). So, presumably, someone has less than in ID plate to start with.
A Photo rebuild?:diablo:

I pretty much cross what was a WW1 runway every time I visit my allotment, where Latham landed an Antoinette, and where Frank Godden, later killed test-flying an SE5a, flew his first aircraft in 1912. Also where the embryonic RFC flew off in pre-war exercises, and where one of the crashes that led to the infamous “monoplane ban” occurred. There’s also an alleged WW1 bombing target in easy sight.
A bit further down the road there’s Bader, Warburton and Gibson’s alma mater, where one of the masters had his own private Bristol Fighter.
Apart from that there’s bu**er all, really.:D
Adrian
Gents, I will pop my bits on a separate thread – I think lindoug will find it less frustrating that way!
Adrian
Notice that all the greenery in the photo is white (there’s an oxymoron for you) – isn’t infra-red photography good for creating a creepy atmosphere?
Adrian
Bluenoser,
I hope lindoug will forgive me the interruption by a (very sad!) tangent, but do you know what the tracking the aircraft are standing on is? It doesn’t look like PSP or Sommerfeld, and I’m curious as to whether or not it’s bar-and-rod.
