First all British ( and world ) aircraft to fly under its own power would be John Stringfellows 1848 steam powered monoplane ( based on Hensons Steam carriage) and of a more practical configuration than many later dead-end designs e.g. Wrights.

As, of course, history has shown.

I was five when they died, so I wouldn’t have heard at the time. However, that is the Neil Williams story I have heard as well. It makes the mind boggle with all the “what if?s”, doesn’t it?

You mat be right, Mike – places like Hampstead Norris and Harwell not far away, one of which was definitely a Wimpey OTU. Plus of course Port Meadow was 300-odd acres of grass, and there is a big chunk of floodplain nearby – now breached by the A34 – both of which would have to be the number one choice for a forced landing if you couldn’t get home again.

Let’s hope the OAG can turn something up!

There seems to be a slight mismatch in the U/C dept….

Yes, I spent a little while trying to work that one out before I twigged it was sprayer, not Spitfire!

Given that Spitfires have been recreated from less…

Any idea where the Ekco Anson ended up, Bruce? I remember it in a parlous state about 15 years ago,and every now and then it surfaces in one or another magazine… Ah yes, Google is my friend… http://www.malmesbury-memories.co.uk/ekcoairborneindex1.html

Worth reading the two side-links as well – I like the old boy saying “One more time before we all fall off our perches!”.

From what little I can see of it, I’m guessing the Anson (2nd sidelink) is the former Ekco one that rotted at Brenzett for many years?

    Paul,

They’d bite your hand off here for that! http://www.1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/
    (assuming you aren’t a member already…)

My one is Lady Bader’s programme for one of the Spitfire 60th airshows. Allegedly. No identifying marks, but given to me by someone who does her gardening. I’ve been offered a tidy sum for it when I mentioned it on here before but sorry, that one stays!

I cannot imagine the noise of all four Griffons and two Vipers at max chat 😮 😮

You are not alone in struggling to imagine the consequences, Joe. IIRC (a rare event) the prototype Viper installation in a Shack was destroyed when either the Vipers were run with the inlet doors closed, or the doors closed while running…

Can anyone more Shack-literate comment, please?

Ah yes, I guess “far from the sea” is relative. Oxford isn’t a bad guess, JDK, the furthest point in the UK is somewhere near Banbury so only about 20 miles away. I just think automatically of the sensible place to base an amphibian as being on the coast…

Dive bombers… news to me! I guess (I’m doing a lot of that) that a high-drag airframe would be quite a stable platform for that, as it wouldn’t keep accelerating but settle at a compromise between drag and kinetic energy. I think that’s the point of divebrakes, isn’t it?

Sadly, the only Walrus highlighted on Youtube is Hendon’s, though one briefly appears on the linked vid of K5054’s maiden flight. So no-one yet has film of Mutt looping it. Pity…
