    Harvard over St Edward’s School, Oxford – not easy to see in the lighting conditions (lots of glare from white clouds) but easy to hear it rrrrrrrrrrrasp!

    What the hell can you say? It’s been a bad few years for B17s and crews – Liberty Belle, then the Collings Foundation’s B17, and now this. I struggle to imagine with all their experience the CAF putting the aircraft in a situation where this could happen, but it has. Been thinking about this for a day and a half and still can’t put my thoughts down clearly.

    I think there’s Fireflies at the end of both rows. I’m not familiar with Bute, but it’s almost certainly not Orkney – apart from the two big hills on Hoy, Orkney isn’t generally that rugged or high.

    While I’m no expert, I’ve spent a fair amount of time round vintage tractors, and I’ve never seen a seat like that. I’d expect a tractor seat to be either pressed steel or cast iron.

    I will put my cards on the tabel now and state firmly that I know *nothing* about the aeroplane. However, I wonder whether it might be painted in patriotic shades (if I’ve found the right Carbery online, likely white, orange and green)?

    I’d also bear in mind that there’s a strong chance that the photo was taken on an orthochromatic emulsion so the tones may be a looong way from the colours they represent.

    Always amazed that an aircraft designed for carriers had a short, narrow, complex undercart like that.

    Low over Kidlington this evening, and looking as though they are still throwing people out of the back, an old friend that I don’t think I’ve seen until now this year – the rotundly porcine shape of a Skyvan!
    (I suppose you could argue I’m obsessed. But for a long time it was our most regular historic visitor, and I’ve always had a soft spot for the flying shed)

    My pleasure – TBH, I recognised the skis and camouflage from pics of Finnish Gladiators, and then it was wading through the Google hits… Not a lot of skill involved!
