It’s not a low-flying thread without an appearance by Mr Hanna….

Surely the original old, bold pilot?

Sadly, so many others who tried to fly like that went to prove that rule…

Thank you Brian, the last thing that made me grin like your post just did was seeing Bob’s avatar for the first time!

As of the 16th of November when we visited the MBCC, there was no official ID. According to the person we spoke to the obvious ID plates have been removed (in one case torn off), and markings may not survive as the movement of the sands with the tide and currents has scoured any exposed surface. So it may have to remain an assumed ID.

Given that it’s obviously been exposed on the open sea bed for much, if not all, of the intervening 73 years, and not buried as we were first told, I’m impressed as much as there is has survived. Hopefully there is quiet work behind the scenes going on regarding groups who have recovered items from wrecks in the channel to see whether any might just happen to have some Do17 plates that match, but I doubt very much we will hear until/if it happens (as I’m sure Andy will confirm, people don’t always put their hand up and say “Oh yes, I had that!”).

I think the first thing you should do is go out and get another kit to build. Leave this one in the signed box 😮

Too late – it was already open and started when the opportunity came to get it signed!

Still hunting the elusive AJ-W decals, may just have to get a generic set of Bomber Command ones and get creative… I do appreciate the suggestions, though!

    Thanks,

Thanks, chaps! I’ve ended up with Revell tape as our local supplier seems to be that or Airfix products, but I’m sure it’ll do the same job. Still hunting decals…

Intriguing – some must have been published since (and I’m pretty certain that the scramble one actually appears in one of Andy’s books) as I’ve certainly seen the ones of A G Lewis before, hard to forget that smile. I wonder whether Life licenced them as a library shots rather than using them themselves. Pity they didn’t get the 5×4 Kodachromes out as they did for the US-based propaganda shots!

indeed the only thing that ever got me slightly perturbed was in a US Army Chinook when he forced the helicopter down through the tree tops until just the rotors were skimming the tops.

Those Wokka-jockeys certainly enjoy getting close to terra firma. On the way back from my grandmother’s funeral, we were all startled by one that rose out of nowhere and flew alongside the road in front of us. If I tell you that the funeral was at Cambridge Crem, those who know Cambridgeshire will appreciate just how low he must have been!

Could be worse – didn’t the 1987 storm put the part-completed cladding of the then-Superhangar across the A505?

Wow, Ian, that is a cracker! A Chain Home site must have been quite a sight up close – I’ve seen the ex-Canewdon tower at Great Baddow, so I have a fair idea how tall they were. Thanks for posting that.

Many thanks for your input on my remarks, Ian. Radar is not high on my list of (too many!) interests, but I am happy to be educated!

I’ve just lost a reply as my net connection fell over, but in April 1943 no less than four ended up in Kent in one night, one intact at West Malling, one burnt out on the runway there, and two smoking holes in the circuit – so definitely more than one shot down!

I used The Last Blitz as my source – no Werke numbers given.

I can think of three off the top of my head – one near Dungeness and at least two near West Malling – so I think you’ve been sold a pup.

I think you’ll find when Andy drops by next that there was nothing to be found of pilot or machine as no-one dug in the right place! Certainly that’s my recollection of one of the reasons for the furore.

It’s ironic to think that the chap in the photo with the camera has almost certainly got a German Leica or Contax in his hand, judging by the shape.

A Chain Home radar was constructed at Drone Hill, north of Coldingham in Berwickshire.

As one of the links says, there’s now a caravan and camp site at Drone Hill – we stayed a night there a few years ago, unaware of what it had been, and it’s quite surreal camping surrounded by pillboxes and obviously WW2 stuff. I suspect with a site map, you could spend a very fruitful day tracing what was where. I suspect that what is now the site bar and dancehall was the Ops block.
