Are you sure that the tanks (overwing) could be jettisonned??? I’m sure I read somewhere that this facility was rendered inoperative during the 80’s at least….
Paul.
Could her engines be started? or are they seized? If so, is there any chance of fixing them? Would you ever consider it if you could? It would be great if she could be taxied!!!!
Also, do you plan to replace the wing tips which were taken off at LHR? Are the wings the same as those on the Trident on the MAN firedump?
I’m really pleased that she has been saved. Well done!!!
Paul.
Actually, the Phantom was already on the dump. The CO was not prepared to have a flying example painted up, so that one was wheeled back from the dump, cosmetically restored and painted up.
It was on the scrap heap anyway.
Still a shame though. Quite why he could’nt have had a flying example painted up like that is beyond me.
Paul.
Can the engines be run up???
No Photos and I know it’s not quite what you are on about, but if you fly over RAF Burtonwood, you can see the outlines of one of the runways in the feild and also of a lot of the buildings and taxi ways.
Have a flight over it on FS2004 with the advanced scenery package for the Northwest and you will see some of it there as well!!!!!!
Paul.
Can her engines and APU be powered up? or if not, could they with a bit of work?
Paul
It’s a shame no one has the funds or willingness to reproduce a Typhoon as per what Flug-Werk have done…….
Or have they? Is it possible? or is the Typhoon too complex???
Seeing one of those fly again would be awesome!!!!!!
Paul.
Why the serial XX466???? I ask this because early Hawks and some Jags have the XX prefix. Does this mean that this is a single seater that has been turned into a two seater in the 70’s or has it been aquired after use elsewhere???
Paul.
If you go down Aerorome Road and past the training school. Cross over the lights and go up the hill and on the corner of the bend you will find a really nice pu (forgot the name) It has hanging baskets outside and has some old pics of the airfield. Also Chequers fifty yards round the bend or the Claddagh Ring, another fifty.
All good pubs, the first one is the best I think.
Paul.
Is’nt a firefly forward fuesalage from there in the Museum of Science and Industry at Deansgate Manchester???
When I went there when I was a kid, I seem to remember one being there complete with Griffon (less cowlings) and complete until just behind the first or second cockpit….
Also, are there any ‘interesting’scrap yards left today??? If so, where are they?
Paul.
Surely there must be a Stirling in a Fjord somewhere?
Any ideas?
Paul.
Escaped German airmen tried to steal an aircraft (marauder) from Burtonwood once but could not get it started.
Also, when my Grandad was based at Thrapston in WWII, he witnessed an LAC who took of in an a/c (type unknown) totally unauthorised and came down in the sea. They said he was trying to get to Axis occupied territory….
A good question that is, how many of our guys defected to the other side during WWII?? what happened to them???
Paul.
Early F104’s had a downward firing ejection seat I believe…
Paul
Why can´t they taxi the Lightning thst they have there….
Isnt it totally complete???
Paul.
Noooooooo not the F-111!!!! They found it difficult to keep their TF-30 turbofans running on regular jet fuel in the 70’s when they started flying them….! same engine in the F-14 A….. very tempremental…. the worlds first (and only?) afterburning turbofan.
Frogfoot however, could run on any old crap you could get your hands on and a mixture of different fuels…. tanks diesel….. parrafin….. normal car gasoline…… I think that this would only be done in a war situation however as it would neccesitiate a very sooner than usual engine change i’m sure!!!!! dunno how they did it though….. anyone know? or is this a question for AFM forum???
Paul…..
