It’s a pity she will never be ground run again. She looks good enough to.

Anyway, there is no ECM gear in 558 anyway since she was converted back from K2 status, so she was’nt ‘original’ anyway.

Yes, a single B29 did come to England during WWII. It was flown into RAF Burtonwood during 1943 and stayed in England for a few weeks. It saw no action.

I went to see her a few weeks ago and they have riveted the crew door shut (only took them fifteen years!).

The fence has come down around her and on the floor I found a badly smashed instrument (directional indicator) and the RAT hatch cover.

The RAT has now been removed also.

    Shame.

Why can’t they continue to taxi her? Is it parts? Money? the people in charge? or the Health and Safety executive???

I can’t see why she still can’t be at least ground run?

Well I read on the XM655 site a few years ago that they always carried enough fuel to divert to Coventry if anything major went wrong. It’s not on there now though! Don’t know how true this is though… anyone shed any light on this?

Shame. I last saw a 1-11 at MAN about four years ago. Not seen a 727 or Tristar for years…

I would love to go on a B707 but don’t really fancy going to Iran. May mate said he went on one in Africa last year but he does’nt know the airline.

One more question: These aircraft that are operated in Third world countries, are they maintained properly e.t.c. or do the owners simply improvise? Are they subject to a C of A like we have here or can they basically do what they like???

Does anyone reckon that they will do the air fete again next year or will the DOD pull it for financial/security reasons???

Windermere used to be a Sunderland Base/construction plant. I heard that there are actually a few down there!!!!!

    I just think it’s a pity that it’s not a Stirling!!!!

Thanks, that’s interesting,. It just all seems to have gone quiet about the search for him. I hope they find him.

Forgive my ignorance, I usually hange around on the Flypast forum! but I have never understood why tried and tested airframes such as the Buccaneer, Victor, Vulcan, Phantom and Canberra e.t.c. are not simply built again but using 21st century technology????

I know that there is a demand for stealth and stuff like that which requires newly designed airframes, but as other peope have said, nothing can really beat a canberra Pr9 for recon or a Buccanner for low level strike.

I know that the market may not be stong enough to supply air forces with new build a/c like these, but I the present world climate, I think that a reduction in armed forces, especially air forces is sheer folly….

Perhaps one day we may need long range strategic bombers (with stand off capability) in large numbers again, for when the entire middle east goes ‘militant’. When the oil dries up, I reckon they will….

Apparently, they are keeping the outboard engines but not refitting the centre engine. Don’t know why.

Don’t know which trident it was, but I think that the last Trident flight in the UK was late December 1985… Something to do with EU noise regs coming into force on 1/1/1986….
