Yep, that’s correct. WH589 was the tail number of the Fury.
Well, Lindy’sLad, there are those on this forum that are better educated than I in all things aviation. However, to attempt to answer your question, Ormond (amongst other things) had his own one-man air display “team” based at Duxford in the early to mid 70s.
He used enthusiasts as his ground crew, some as young as 8-9, right up to middle aged gentlefolk. We tended his aircraft (and cars) for the love of aircraft.
He had in his “fleet” (as I recall) a Sea Fury, a couple of T-33s, a CF-100, a Chipmunk, a couple of Blenheims (in pieces when I worked on them) etc. etc.
Were it not for Ormond, there’s a good chance the Blenheim’s would never have become airworthy. The likes of John Romain and the ARC may never have come into being (JR was on Ormond’s grounnd crew with me). I’m sure there’s a whole lot of other good stuff the likes of Alexis Lambert could elaborate on…
Hope that’s at least given you an insight.
So, does anyone else out there have any other pictures of OHB or his “toys”? 🙂
OK. Keep me posted and we’ll sort comething out. Watford is not that far if push comes to shove. I could dust my bike down and take it for a blast…
I’d wanna be in the FA-18 every time!
We’ll have to arrange a meet some time. I live in Camberley.
Thanks once again Guys! I’ve been looking for shots like these for years all to no avail! That was before I knew about this site, eh?
One day I’d like to meet up with ya and share a beer or 6. I’m living in Surrey these days, 20 miles or so from LHR.
Cracking shot Martin! Thanks!!
Can’t possibly compete with the cornfield shot, but the HB contingent at Greenham Common, 1974.
Thanks for posting those. They are the best shots I have seen of the Fury to date. I have none of her in the air. I see the guy on the Fury wings on the last picture. I can’t quite see who it is. I’ll try to zoom in and see if I can recognise them. Alas, it’s not me. I never got to any of the Greenham Common shows! 🙁
Ormond and his two brothers, Wensley and Densel. And who could forget his two sisters, Leonora and Pandora! 🙂
I knew Ormond had 2 brothers but have never heard of the sisters. Are they still around?
I am not sure. I assume they are still on this earth as they were, if I recall, youmger than Ormond (and much prettier too!)
Thanks Foster B. I too would love some pictures if you have any electronic versions. Post them here if you like or, alternatively, send them to my email address.
And thanks Alex for the picture of Ormond in the P-51. One of those spooky shots when you consider his fate the following day! 🙁
Thanks Alex. I have just contacted John Romain at ARCo to see what he has. I’ll keep ya posted…
Oh and i was there when the picture of the T-33 was taken flying that’s on your thread. I don’t recall if John was on foot for that one. I reckon he may have been on the at-the-time derelict control tower building. In any case, he would only have been at first-floor level tops!
Hi guys and thanks for the pointers. Alas I was only 12 or 13 years old at the time (if that) and I regret to say I have no pictures at all! I didn’t even own a camera I don’t think! It’s such a shame as we and many others had a blast there.
I remember so much from those days. Ormond and his two brothers, Wensley and Densel. And who could forget his two sisters, Leonora and Pandora! 🙂 I remember trips out in Ormond’s Rolls Royce Phantom 6 to the garage on the A505 to buy fags/food/pop etc. And the long hours I spent polishing the spoked wheels of his Aston Martin DB5! And “pulling 16” on the prop of the Sea Fury to get the oil into the journals of the engine…
Those were the days! If only my son would get into such stuff, instead of his PC and PS2! 🙂
