So how do we know this is a PLA sponsored or produced video?

Not that it’s a terribly big deal in any case. Just because America has so many enemies they can pretend like their latest war fantasy doesn’t represent any particular one of them doesn’t mean all nations have that luxury. And of course as the video clearly indicates, the Chinese are merely responding to a first strike against them, and therefore embody the forces of righteousness and liberty.

Right and USSR faked an attack from finnish side to “justify” their attack to Finland in Winterwar 1939. This is how the wars may start.

Yeah too bad Roosevelt was a commie.

Gave the soviets everything they wanted & more in WWII.

    Nic

Well certainly they did think communism has to be something great as the russian commies actually cleaned the shield for everytime a western inspection group visited the gulags…the genoside and ethnic cleansing in Karelia and around Ingermanland went pretty smootly in the thirdies…masses were machinegunned down on arrival….according to rare witnesses and political prisoners ( priests, doctors, merchants and most of all…christian farmers ) were nailed rusty nails in the skull when asleep by real criminals ( according to west fleed prison guards ). Few lucky ones were just raped, robbed and dispersed around USSR..after life sentence without a reason in a gulag of course. This is called “assimilation” by the post communist era researchers.

The air bases seem wide apart to me, some cases more than the combat radius of the hornets. Also does Finland have interests near the pole?

It has to be american, best bet for them to defend against Russia.

I think f16s may just remain in production particularly if the “JSF” flops. Loads cheaper to operate for 98% of the typical roles combat aircraft play today.

No despite the Norwegian area Finnmark and finnish speaking northern Sweden we finns have no part in the north pole, cause USSR took away our ports in the Arctic Sea….and the land connection and nickel mines in that region after WW II.

If you go that way, why have an air force in the first place?

only countries like china, russia, india, usa or brasil may claim to have any “depth”.. maybe they should be the only ones to have an air force?

I think Finland needs AF to work as a defensive means against an enemy…who the enemy is we have no clue. Sometimes if the socialists rule it may be the west and visa versa. Unfortunately the enemy has so far trying to come 3 times from the east ( during 98 years of independence )…..and even some socialists have not been fully happy with that. Luckily there is no rogue state in our neighborhood so we hopefully can live in peace and prosper for a very long time. AF can relax and just keep the minimal duties ongoing like pilot training ( and save taxpayers money ).

Spanish AV-8B Harrier II use the old external fuel tanks from the AV-8S “Matador” like baggage travel pods

Finland has no depth, those air bases can not be dependent upon in any conflict,
its only dispersed bases or its allied bases from start of conflict, or there is no air force.
So IMO its F-35B or Gripen, or F-35A if Finland join NATO

Aren’t dispersed 80+ airfields actually depth in practise ?

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/1f/Map_of_Finland-en.svg/800px-Map_of_Finland-en.svg.png

Distance between some of the airfields is greater that 800 miles.

    pretty much two aspects:

    – limited G-tolerance of that lifeform

    – political need to have that lifeform back in “good as new” condition as much as possible (political because it’s the politicians, in the end, who decide what is bought or not).

So you need life saving equipment (oxygen, escape systems), all instruments in a cockpit to do the job, and so on… all that takes space, is heavy and costly.

Put it as a drone, deltawinged, no fuselage to speak about, and you can make a cheaper aurframe, going faster, turning tighter and carrying a higher fraction of useful weight

You have to remember that colonel Stabb endured 40+ negative and in some cases human have tolerated 150 positive Gs and lived to tell about it.

So a little better G-suit and ergonomic solutions could bring the life form to tolerate about +20 and -12 Gs for the trained airmen.

You have any statistics to prove that Finn-Swdes are leaving?

It has been widely in the news.

Mina Svenska är inte så bra. Most Finns have only very rudimentary knowledge of Swedish, so they prefer English. It’s easier to communicate when both speak English at 70% level, than when one speaks Swedish at 100% and other at 20%. Accents, of course, make it only harder. Finnish Swedish is pretty easy to understand with many phonemes not that different from Finnish, but mainland ‘Riksvenska’ is harder, to say nothing about Skåne, Norwegian etc…

No, it’s nonsense. And we’re only all too happy to get rid of dumbasses like Wahlroos. I give it five years before Swedes are sick of him and try to send him back.

And what is this UCAV stuff? There are no UCAVs available for FAF requirements in foreseeable future and they’re not considered, end of story.

Exceptionally many finn-swedes are leaving that is a fact.

When Björn Wahlroos stalinist background will be discovered he has to apply asylym somewhere like Edward Snowden.

    You lost me there!?

Perhaps; I have been to Finland just a couple of times and when talking to some of the locals I had to switch to English since they did not understand my Norwegian whereas I have never spoken English to a Swede, they never had issues with my Norwegian…

Are they really leaving in large quantities? If yes, perhaps it’s more related to the Finnish economy and not the Russkies? (If they were really concerned about the russkies they should flee to Norway, which is protected by NATO… ;))

Yes swedes like Björn Wahlroos ( a banker ) did leave Finland due to high taxation. Large quantity is like 1000 of them. We get similar amount of refugees a year.

So what is the situation in Finland?

    Test test !

I find it a bit funny that a swede in Finland think finns cannot read swedish newspapers albeit they are taught from third grade to learn swedish.

Apparently swedes ( finnish swedes ) think something in Finland has happened as they are leaving for Sweden in large quantities.

Increased aerial activity on the Russian side apparently make some folks loose their nerves.

    Convair Model 200 (1973)

    I hear you…looks a lot like a Gripen actually.

I bet they had no fuel on that after those twins behind the pilot.

So YAK-141 possibly solved several issues that Convair had.

    F/A-18C/D can’t accommodate the AN/APG-79. For that you’d need the scaled-down version (APG-79(V)X)..
But there is still the AN/APG-83 SABR which you could use.
