I have seen film of Catalina towing a glider. Their is a film called “All the Kings Horsa’s” made by Lawrence Wright, who also wrote the book “Wooden Sword”. In the film there is a Hotspur 1 being towed by a Hawker Hector. The Hotspur has only one under carriage leg on. Its intresting if you want to see the start of the start of British military gliders. The museum of Army flying has a copy.

The Fairey 111f did have a Napier lion X1A engine, but most had Fairey Reed metal propellers. Another possiblity could be a Blackburn Ripon some had a Lion X1A engine.

WH208 Meteor 7 fire heap. I have an inspection cover of this aircaft
    XG475 Belvedere scrap heap
XA701 Javelin for fire heap. I still have a panel from this aircraft.
    WZ864 Chipmunk scrap heap
    7502M Meteor scrap heap
    XM111 Beverley camouflaged awaiting scraping
    XM103 Beverley camouflaged awaiting scraping
    XL130 Beverley silver awaiting scraping
    XL131 Beverley silver awaiting scraping
    XH122 Beverley silver awaiting scraping
The Beverleys where in or next to the bomb dump which was still full of bombs, great to walk around as a kid. The Hastings was at the other side of the airfield but i dont have its number. I have some instrument faces out of one of the Beverleys. I did write to the C.O of Bicester at the time asking for a control column from a Beveley. I did get a reply, but know control column.

I remember when the RAF museum got the DH9a back from Poland with out wings. They did not know Which type of spars to use, Some DH9a’s had spindeled spars others had box spars. I dont know which way they went in the end.

Some years ago the late Vic Spencer, Then with Russavia. Went to look at the hanger there. I think he wanted to buy it. He was shown around it and took photo’s. But their was so much asbestos and to move it would have cost to much.

I remember going to London with my ATC squdron 460 Dunstable to watch the film when it came out. Later in the early 1980’s i repaired the thatch on the house of the stills photographer Keith Hampshire on the film and many Bond films. He had many photo albums full of shots he took during making the film. He let me take them home to look at. Later he said if there was a couple of simlar shots i could take one, i ended up with around 20 or so photo’s taken in Span, Duxford and Henlow. But because of his copy right i cant put them on show.

In 1940 the RAF did RDF (later called radar) trials on the south coast at Woth Matravers. This was done with gliders, as we where expecting the Germans to arive this way. One glider was built by Slingsby with minimal metal fittings to see what the radar reflection would be like. I have never heard the results of these trials where. The wings of this glider still survive they are fitted to another fusleage of the same type, a Kirby Kite 1. This is owned by my father and myself at the moment, but soon to move Haddenhan where it flew in 1941.

I have a ladder which was used in a garden. This was so the mid upper gunner could get into his turret on a Stirling. I got it from a man who paid ten shillings for it. This came out of one of the Stirling’s at Woburn Park, i use to live in the next village.
