MCA has to be fielded in huge nos to replace Mig23/27/Jag/M2K – a inventory of around 300 a/c. So it had better be smaller and cheaper to operate than a large heavy fighter.
first word from horse’s mouth that MCA is now started.

DRDO to develop new fighter aircraft
June 05, 2004 00:39 IST
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has initiated talks with the Indian Air Force to design and develop a Medium Combat Aircraft (MCA), a fifth generation fighter plane.
“We have started drawing (designing) the next generation Light Combat Aircraft, which we call as Medium Combat Aircraft (MCA). We are in a dialogue with the users (IAF) to find out their design specifications,” Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and DRDO Director General V K Aatre told reporters in Bangalore on Friday.
“Sooner or later, perhaps, in a decade or so, we should build our own twin engine aircraft,” he said.
so will all these new HW be deployed onlee against Indonesia or
some expeditionary colonial wars ? australia and NZ have the safest and most decent neighbours around – whales, porpoises and dolphins..good to have 😉

two-cent jihad types crawling around in the bushes arranging ambushes and IEDs could be dealt with by gun pods and small caliber rockets. AH64D, A10 and F16 the three machines that are doing the CAS/COIN role arent really ideal. maybe the OV-10 needs to come outa retirement as the US is going to embroiled in these bush wars forever – or make a prop driven large UAV armed with guns/rockets and dont fall prey to usual US habit of a 20 yr , $20 trillion program that will solve 700% of the original problem.
something like these cued by UAV sensor imagery would be useful for patrolling the supply chain in places like iraq and af. lot of people have been felled by IEDs and regular old F-16s are probably too expensive and scarce to maintain a constant vigil?
interesting. what kind of role is the Pampa used in – just training or light attack ? when was it introduced ?
sure beats the drab white of LCA hands down. they need to move
the paint guy into his new job – get the LCA lookin sharp n mean!
HAL has delivered 8 upg-Jags last year, this year maybe 25?
the first upg-Mig27 has been flying a while now so serial upg of first lot of 40 would start this year.
per the link below F-16 airframe life is 8000 hrs
http://www.danshistory.com/f16.html
I think what it means is after 2000hrs a Flanker has to be extensively
overhauled, taken apart , all components checked and weakened parts
replaced to reset the airframe life ?
now someone has to check what kind of radars the 19th sqdn birds have.
12th FS Elmendorf has 24 AESAfied F15C

it was the 19th sqdn that came to india

no aesa but these eagle drivers being 15C types are definitely among
the very best in the world at ACM and one of first to field the aim9x.
Vympel, the initial 8 MK-I were a2a only, the next 10 (originally meant for indonesia) have a limited diving PGM attack mode using their optronic thing in the nose. all of them can carry around 20 medium bombs and use a ccip mode I think.
Ken, the mkis were not used just the MK. the weapons used were
AA-11 & AA-10 on one side and sidewinder & sparrow on the other. No Bars, no adder, no aim9x , no amraam. So it was not
a top-of-line matchup….but still quite revealing no doubt.
> I hope the Indians believe this at least
and why should they when then *know* it were not aesa but regular f15c
and they (iaf) scored very well in all types of engagments. aesa doesnt
enter the picture.
apparently per unofficial reports the usaf pilots were hamstrung by
lack of a E-3 which they have gotten used to. in the next exercise in
alaska in which iaf jaguars will participate they are going to use E-3s
though the Jags can hardly fight back if pounced upon by f15 of any hue.
