Hi, 609’s Sgt Alan Norman FEARY’s grandson here again. Just an enquiry about R6922 and X4165. You have R6922 (PR-K) and R6922 (PR-T) and X4165 (PR-N) and X4165 (PR-O). Were Spitfires R6922 and X4165 recoded at some point and why. Which code was first? Also R6690 is listed as (PR-Q) but a replica of the plane Dundas flew on the 13th of August 1940 and the same plane Gaunt was KIA in sits outside Yorkshire Aircraft Museum and it bears the sqn code (PR-A). Also on the photo of the blackboard taken on the 13/08/40 the sqn code of the plane the pilots piloted is written before each name and Dundas is listed as ‘A’. I am positive R6690 is (PR-A) and the mistake occured when someone saw the photo below of Appleby’s machine and misread the serial as R6690 when it was in fact R6637 (PR-Q). I believe this mistake occured before the inception of the internet. R6690 (PR-Q) has been published in books, even if it is wrong the information is so intrenched it may as well be true. The stag in the pictures of R6690 (PR-Q) is in fact Appleby’s family crest and nothing to do with Dundas. I made the picture of R6690 (PR-A), I copied its likeness from the R6690 that sits outside Yorkshire Aircraft Museum.

Hi Snapper, I am Gerard John Drake-Feary the grandson of Sgt Alan Norman FEARY who you mentioned in this thread. I am compiling a list of 609 squadron codes and their corresponding serial numbers and I very much need your help. A lot of squadron codes for the Spitfires issued to the 609 are unknown. It would be great if you were able to fill in some of the blanks. I have provided a link to a document and given you the authority to edit the document. I sure would like to hear any information you have on the 609 Squadron especially anything about the squadron during the Battle of Britain time period. Are you able to identify the serial numbers of the Spitfires in these photos? The first photo is reported to be Crooks machine. In the photo it looks like it maybe PR-G but I maybe wrong. The other three photos are from the Official 609 Squadron Photo Archive Drem. I have enjoyed reading the material you have posted in this blog, it has enlightened me a great deal. Hello, I am Gerard John Drake-Feary, son of David Drake-Feary. Sgt Alan Norman Feary is my grandfather. I want to thank everyone for going to the effort of conducting the dig. What was uncovered laid to rest miss information that Alan had been flying a Hurricane at the time of his death and proved unequivocally that he was flying a Spitfire on the day he died, so thanks again. On a visit to England my father on a visit to the crash site was given this metal plaque that someone had retrieved from the crashed Spitfire. Upon learning my father was the son of the pilot that had died, he went and retrieved this piece of metal. I believe it was the farmer on who’s land the plane had crashed that gave it to him but I may be wrong. I was wondering if anyone knew which part of the plane it came from? There is one other piece of information I wish to discover. There is a story I heard about what occured when soldiers were dispatched to retrieve the body and the anger and ire of an RAF officer aimed at them after they attempted to move it without draping a flag over him first. I was very young when I heard the story and was wondering if any one knew of it because I am hazy on the details.

Thanks Voytech. Here are some of the serials, with known codes, of the 609 Spits. I haven’t really looked into them regarding tie-ups as yet, but will get around to it one day!

I just want to ask, where did you compile this list from? There are some names that do not appear on the official list of The Few, but talking to my friends who know about these things they say those people should be on the list but due to reasons like dying during training flights, even if shot down by enemy fire, they were not included.

Snapper could you possibly confirm if this is or is not my grandfather Sgt Alan Norman Feary. I found this photo in the Official 609 Squadron Photo Archive; “Drem”. The striking similarity to my grandfather struck me immediately.

Snapper, who is that standing on the fuselage of the plane in the 3rd photo? I am trying to put names to all the photos from the official 609 Squadron Photo Archive; Men of 609.pdf

    609 Photos

Snapper, Gerard Drake-Feary here, Sgt. Alan N Feary’s grandson. I am putting together a data base of 609 Squadron photos. Saving them for prosperity and historical accuracy. I am matching names to the people in the photos. Would it be possible to get copies of these photos without the water marks. I will not publish or try to profit from the images, I only wish to save them and add an accurate record of who is in each photo and the story behind them. There are less and less people every day that know the stories behind these images and I wish to save at least some of them for prosperity. Email me if you wish gdrake.feary@gmail.com
