My deepest condolances to his family.:( Just saw the photos of the crash site on SkyNews… horrible.
It’s just like cars these days. All converge on what’s the most efficient shape. I bet atleast the car people would love to see someone push their limits and make something that stood out a bit,it could possibly become a classic just by it’s different looks. Nowadays every car looks the same, and you have to guess the marque and model as it’s not readily seen. Now,if Boeing (?) had continued their plans with their BWB airliner… ๐
http://www.spitfirerestoration.com/ for drawings.
Anything by Crecy Publishers, Ian Thirsk/Phil Birtles/Stuart Howe for photo references.
I have already inquired about the drawings available there…. They cover about 30% of the plane,so there’s a “bit” missing. Time to go bookshopping then…. Any titles to reccommend?
If I ever would get me WoN bulletin I would have been there…:(
That means Kjeller would possibly be “Second oldest in Scandinavia” then… ๐
Ljungbyhed in Sweden is still in use as an airport – first take off’s and landings were made in 1910!
Beats us then. First flights here was September 21,1912… But second best does.. ๐
I can see a few euro’s needed to be poured into that one… ๐
Inderdaad, De Chester fabriek van Vickers Armstrong bouwde hoofdzakelijk Wellington bommenwerpers.
Sorry chaps

Cees,It never ceases to shock me how incredibly close Dutch are to Norwegian when it comes to the sound of many words… I don’t know a word of Dutch, but I could read that…

We nearly lost our little “OLD” airfield a few years ago. The City council was looking to close it down and make it half park and half condos. A group formed up to save the airfield. They did a big public relations camgaign to show the value, utility and history of the airfield as well as the economic benifits and jobs that the field bring to the community.
I know one of the leaders of that “Action Group”. If you like, I could see if I could get some of their campaign information and tactics from him that help to save our field. It may help save yours.
Chris
Thanks for that,I’d appreciate anything we can use that might save it. ๐ As of now the field holds RNoAF’s main aircraft servicing and repair unit, and they have quite some space there. Some of it in the same old buildings. When they leave in a few years, the field is planned to be shut down as there are then “no jobs available there”.
Imagine how nice it would be to keep the runway so the civilian part (located at the eastern end of the runway) could still be,and to situate a museum in those buildings (located in the western end)…possibly even situate flying warbirds and/or restoration facilities there. We have had complaints about noise from magneto checks done at the civilian side during airshows, but as the RNoAF’s building complex shield large areas from any noise that would not be an issue… ๐
Now if I could only win the Lottery…big time. :diablo:
As someone here has mentioned,I was thinking of “military use”… reason for asking is that Kjeller Airfield just outside Oslo,Norway has been in operational military use for 95 years this year… And someone though it was one of the oldest in the world.
Reason number two for asking is that might be a leverage point in the case of it’s closing… ๐ก the Bยค/%y Idiots they call developers and / or The Government wants to make it full of highrises… So much for remembering our history. ๐ ๐ ๐
Edit: The term “airfield” was not intended for balloon/kite stuff…proper aeroplanes,if I may… ๐
Or even Battle of Britain

BoB in a remake with CGI smoke trails / barrel flashes and links/cartridges pouring out of the wings…and possibly some more realistic kills (panels flying off the planes when hit) /exploding aircraft. That’s about the only things that movie needs to be realistic enough to send shivers down your spine…IMHO. ๐
Why worry about FW190’s in the BoB? Imagine what could have happened in the much more likely scenario that A: Hitler doesn’t “take a break” just after Dunkirk. B: He doesn’t stop bombing of the RAF even though the Allies have bombed Berlin. C: He sees the potential of jet aircraft pre-war and have a few hundred of the 262 as a fighter by early 42. Or all of the above…
Ross,
Well, if this is more than a rumour, perhaps a closer look could yield some results. We cannot have too many Halifaxes. I know (money)…
Cheers
Cees
It will be a big look then…like I said, the lake is big… You would definiately need a sonar or MAD-device to find her,I guess… And by the way,the Germans had their main aircraft engine servicing unit at Kjeller Airfield, which is situated just 5-6 miles to the north-northwest of the lake. Several of the missions to this area was to bomb that facility…

Indeed my Norwegian sounds exactly like my swedish and danish (awful that is).
I guessed so ๐
From the MK III on the Halifax had Bristol Hercules XV, XVI and 100 sleeve valve radial engines. So we have here another possible recoverable Halifax?
Any more information you can get.
Where is Karl Kjarsgaard when you need him:D
Cheers
Cees
The only more info I have is basically what I’ve said already…to go into details; It bellylanded on the frozen lake. Did not seem to break apart in the landing. The inboard left engine had flames coming out of it. Sank quickly, and no Germans ever came to ask about it (or it’s crew) so it has possibly sunk completely undetected. That’s it… ๐
The lake is fairly big,as can be seen in this photo taken half a mile away from the shore. This is no more than a quarter of it,it might not even be as much as that.
Wow,:D ๐ฎ
Get it out I say.
Cees
Cees… I’m now reading the notes… and I’ve written: (translated of course,as I guess you are not proficient in Norwegian ๐ )
“It seemed to have one engine on fire, and it had 4 big round engines”… Radials of a Halifax?
