This is somewhat of a guess but in these case I suspect it is not a place name but an Nth American Indian tribe name. We have the Curtiss P36 Mohawk, the Nth American P51 Apache (the Allison engined version, configured for ground attack), so Dakota seems to follow in this pattern because of the Sioux tribal branch the Dakota (and actually that is now rendered as Lakota I believe) – hence Douglas Dakota.
The place name Dakota is actually North or South Dakota.
But I could be wrong.
So this is Oran without the WW2 sound effects. 😀
That’s a copy of the Bleriot – maybe it is a Bleriot. That triangular wing thingy looks like an accident waiting to happen.
It’s got to be worse or else it would have been used much more, especially when you think of the advantages in weight saving, (less structure, control surfaces, linkages etc), and less drag.
I’m really not sure what the problems are, but for Supermarine to have changed from the V tail 508 to the standard tail 525 and Scimitar, it must have been drastic.
Republic weren’t very happy with the V tail on the XF-91 compared to the conventional tailed version.
The V tail was replaced with a conventional tail because of directional stability at high speeds. This might not be a problem in aircraft with lower Mach numbers.
Why not simply buy them OTS?
That would be the logical step and if the US sold them to the Iranians that would put the US in the better position of being a balance for progress rather than just a supporter of Israel. Actually might lift our stocks in the ME.
Iran have already been trying at the whole couterwieght thing and failing miserably in both Iraq and Gaza, unless you want to see Iran give Hamass these new shiny stealth fighters?
Hell why not, why should the Israelis always have all the airpower? – and it might make the Israelis think twice before they upset the place again. I know we are all supposed to hate Iran because the US does but on balance I think that the Iranians have shown much less aggression in the ME than a couple of other powers I can think of.
Anyway it will be interesting to see what the Iranians can produce – they can’t do any more damage than anyone else has done in that part of the world. Gawd I hate all this militaristic white men rule BS we are inflicted with at the moment, and the Israelis do need to be taken down a peg or two. I am tired of seeing the world forever being bought to the brink because Israel can’t control itself.
Well I hope it is true – we need a counterbalance to Israel in the ME. Might make the Israelis a little less aggressive.
A suburb of Melbourne, Australia – Ashwood has a block of streets named Lancaster, Ventura, Wirraway, Hudson, Anson, Liberator, Beaufort, Catalina, Mitchell, Halifax and Mustang.
Armstrong Whitworth Ape – I defy anyone (except of course the French designers of the 1930s) to do better, or is that worse?
Hmmm, thanks! And what about that dash? I don’t recall seeing a dash actually painted on the a/c?
Dash – sometimes there appears to have been a little bit of creative separation of the letters and numbers in codes. I note that in Robertson’s book (quoted above) there is a picture of a Vernon marked JR-6904. There is also a picture of a Wapiti K-1300 of 27 Squadron. It just seems that the regs may say one thing but people do other things. I would like to see that photo of the Gordon if you track it down.
I can’t see it!
John
That’s an easy one – it’s a Stealth Bomber 😀
As Malcolm has said the “R” addition to a serial was used to denote a ‘rebuilt at local depot airframe’ and was very common in the 20’s but not certain about the 30’s use as K2630 was built in 32 and written off in 36 .
John
Oddly and perhaps a coincidence – according to Robertson’s British Military Aircraft Serials 1878-1987 Gordon K2603 was rebuilt in service. Might be a typo, or p’raps the serial on the aircraft in the photo was repainted with an error.
The second query relates to a shot of a fuselage section of what’s presumably a complete crashed aircraft on some rocks. It looks like a Fairey Gordon or similar, but there wasn’t enough to tell. What really caught my attention was the serial, which was KR-2630 – Not a format I recognise as likely or possible in the inter-war RAF (or RAAF for that matter.) Yes, it did include the ‘-‘ in the middle as well.
Over to our experts!
The “R” in the serial means that it was rebuilt – started as K2630 then was rebuilt at a depot, p’raps after an accident or just the need to keep it in service, money being tight. Common practice in the 20s etc.
So the bunker is bunkum 😀
The Ile de France did –
