The TCX LGW Boeing base is approximately 10% female. Strangely enough all 3 Captains are pregnant at the moment.

    It wasn’t me.

The problem is, Matt, that both (or all 3 or 4) engines will probably have sustained identical damage. My first port of call would be the vibration gauges but I wouldn’t be looking at shutting anything down That would only be an option if you could guarantee there was no damage to the other engine. It would be time to cross your fingers and follow the line in the Boeing QRH (presumably Airbus say the same) ‘Plan to land at the nearest suitable airport’. This was one of the strangest things in the bmi incident – why the hell did the crew continue from overhead the Alps to Manchester rather than dive into Munich, Zurich, Frankfurt, etc?

That sounds like the pilots accidentally selected the hijack code on their transponder which automatically triggers a warning on the controllers radar screen.

I would like to see pictures of the people who were there! That way I’ll know who to look for next time!

Yes, I loosely knew the captain. Terrible occurance that I frequently remember when I’m overflying the Sahara.

All modern aircraft have colour weather radar these days but are only as good as the operator trying to use it. I was in the sim last week with a guy who was following the bmi A320 and who was sunsequently involved in the AAIB enquiry. Apparantly the bmi crew had turned on their weather radar but somehow failed to notice that it was deflected fully down giving solely ground returns so they switched it off!!!

wrt engine hailstone ingestion, the manufacturers will make all sorts of suggestions about what forces of nature and birdstrikes their engines will tolerate but it wouldn’t stop you worrying if you had it happen for real. Bearing in mind that in a typical high bypass turbofan 80% of the thrust comes from the cold bypass air which is solely propelled by the big front fan, I’d still be crapping myself if the engine didn’t flame out!

Great report EAL King. All the time you make the effort to write it, I’ll make the effort to read it. Good stuff. Glad you liked Monastir.

There are many occasions where I follow posts on these forums and see comments that are somewhat sketchy with regard to their accuracy and it would be very easy to come on here and be nothing but critical…but we have to remember that this forum was established with enthusiasts in mind to discuss whatever they wish rather than be eternally corrected because of not having an ATPL grade education.

Someone (it matters not who) made a questioning comment re something they noticed which seemed consistent with EZY operations into EDI so I offered points in a style aimed for discussion rather than dictatored fact. I could have pulled out the EZY ops manual straight away but that wasn’t what I was aiming to achieve. I was trying to show why there may be a difference compared to other airlines/types. When you pushed the issue I thought I’d quote the type that EZY are most likely to use in the scenario in question. The question asked was why EZY seem to miss the first exit, it didn’t just ask about the airlines only flying ‘apples’ or only flying ‘pears’ so I have given a selection of reasons why an EZY 737 apple might turn off at a different point to a BA 757 pear. Now my outfit have got some right 757 bananas…

OK Spotty M, I did try to say ‘don’t know for sure’ but let me quote from the EZY 737-700 operations manual which I happen to have a set of. Max landing mass is 58,059kg whereas almost all 757’s are 90,000kg. That IS just about 2/3 of the mass for half the braked wheels and we’re only even talking about a mid-sized 737 here! Comparing the 757-200 QRH to the 737-700 QRH for max landing weight Vref the 737 comes out a 3kt faster at flap 30 and 1kt faster at flap 40. These figures are not perhaps as fast as I thought but they still show my comment to be correct and again we’re only talking about a mid sized 737 here! I did imply it was weight dependent by saying per unit of weight. On the subject of brakes, I never said it wasn’t a good system I just said it was an older design compared to more modern types. I see you agree with me about turnaround times and brake cooling so I don’t know why you raise that again. Finally I didn’t mention anything about A321 take off distance so perhaps you could direct that comment elsewhere.

One of the great things about this forum is that it isn’t PPRuNe so perhaps we can leave the PPRuNe style over there. Those of us who have emigrated over here are here because of better etiquette.

Yes you always follow a TCAS instruction first. The senior chap in the Tu154 right seat was totally for the failure of TCAS to resolve the situation. It was anothr example of a cultural issue at play in an aircraft accident which could perhaps have been given a bit more consideration in the summing up. In years to come TCAS will probably provide lateral separation in addition to the current vertical only separation which will give further sfaety benefits which would probably have saved these two aircraft despite the Russian mistake.

I too felt that Peter X was being set up to carry the entire can. His main sin was that he didn’t recall his help when the workload increased. The operational problems were more the fault of his managers and the confused state of operational affairs they had been allowed to employ.

Just as an extra talking point, did you know that almost all UK airlines have 10 days to fix a broken TCAS system, Therefore an airliner can be operated for up to 10 days with no TCAS! Now in theory the other aircraft is capable of responding and completing all avoiding action…so long as it hasn’t got failed TCAS as well!
