If he doesn’t flare I’d like to see the picture about 5 seconds later!

They aren’t built specifically to take it they just happen to be able to cope with a very small amount of it at very, very small angles. Do it deliberately in a light aircraft or an airliner and you will very soon be the first one on the scene of an accident.
Someone her must have a picture of an old Stratocruiser about to touch down nosewheel first. Anyone? A330C?

Luke – Paphos is a military airport which has opened up to civilian use in the last few years. It has one runway WNW-ESE and a bl00dy massive ramp! It has an ILS onto one end of the runway and a VOR approach onto the other. Terrain and weathern are not usually too much of an issue so you can usually get a good self positioning visual approach day or night. The turn off the runway to the ramp is halfway down and difficult to make in a 757 without cooking the brakes but if you don’t make it you have a very convoluted route to get back as they won’t very often let you backtrack.

Wheelbarrowing is a surefire way of busting the nosegear and isn’t a recommended technique in any aircraft ops manual. The geometry of some aircraft (coupled with bad piloting) make it more prone to this than others. A classic case of this was the Stratocruiser which could regularly be seen wheelbarrowing into Heathrow!

If you’re lucky Ryanair will leave you alone.

A very sensible move that will enable the all important air links to be maintained. I’d like to see more regions follow suit.

Waxing of diesel fuel has largely been eradicated over the last few years by chemical improvements. Airliners use fuel to cool the oil and at the same time the oil to warm the fuel so this process is probably also used in diesel cars.

    A few short explanations:

According to my friend in BA product and service all BA 737’s have ovens but Bologna isn’t considered worthy of a hot meal unless you are in club.

About the 10 meter bus journey – no matter the distance involved rules is rules. This is governed by insurance as aprons and passengers wandering freely don’t mix. Passengers have a habit of wandering off (even on a 10 meter journey!) to take photos, etc.

The security people wanted to see your shoes as a direct consequence of Richard Wright, the shoe bomber. We amuse ourselves by calling it ‘ a bit of sole searching!’

The Channex A300 would have been busy at night with the crew resting in a hotel by day.

Wing upper surface speedbrakes and tail clam door type speedbrakes act in very different ways. Wing devices act more as lift reducers than drag generators whereas tail mounted devices are pure drag items. Wing devices must, must, must not be deployed through the actual landing as it is dangerous to mess about with lift generation at such a critical time. They are used in the descent to increase the descent rate when required and sometimes to assist in speed reduction. Rear mounted devices are usually used to increase drag in the final stage of an approach so that the jet engines can be spooled up to a higher thrust without accelerating the aircraft. This means that in the event of a go around the engines will respond much quicker as jet engines are notoriously slow to wind up from low thrust settings.

I think the new forum is a big improvement BUT I have had a lot of difficulty logging on. In the end I had to request a new password and then change it to my old one. I also note that my post count seems to have reduced by 60 or so. Did Kabir get mine? 😀

    RE: Webmaster!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-02-03 AT 00:51 AM (GMT)]Over the last few weeks I have found myself becoming less and less interested in these forums. At first I thought it was me but reading A330’s post has helped me identify it. There are many great young guys/gals that post on these forums who I find an absolute delight to talk aviation with. These guys show remarkable maturity and knowledge of the subject and yet despite being an aviation professional I still find there is much I learn about the broader view of aviation from them. Hellaid, however, kicked off to a poor start but tried to make amends. Unfortunately he is not mature enough yet to understand how his posts are received by others or wise enough to realise that he should sit back and observe until his input is appropriate. Being a couple of decades in advance I find it painful to follow threads posted in a text message style writing or typed so quickly that there is no sense in the subject matter but perhaps this is just another example of how the other guys are just that bit more grown up. Hellaid is however not alone, another loose poster is now present showing similar traits. The advice to ignore these people is not possible as they infect just about every thread on the 2 forums I follow. Of course the biggest test will now be how these guys react to this post. I expect to receive a verbal tirade but it will only prove me right!

To all the other forum members it is an honour to keep your company.

    Best regards
