    RE: Rolls-Royce Trent

Presumably similar to the diffuser on the back end of A340 CFM engines. As Kabir says, it does a lot to suppress noise.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-11-02 AT 12:07 PM (GMT)]The original report was finished just 18 days after the crash!!! Because of the intent to sell the airship concept, the report stated that the airship was in fully serviceable and very good condition at the time of the crash, however, the reality was that because turnaround times were so tight a lot of very complex maintenance was being done in flight. The Germans also tried to hide the fact that the structure was damaged in a crash 10 days before but was hastily repaired on the move. There were also significant electrical faults at the time of the arrival in New York and it is believed that the fire actually started by an electrical fault igniting the diesel that powered the engines rather than static electricity.

It’s very rare to find 1 pilot who doesn’t want to progress to a jet, but a whole airline of them…

    RE: Open Skies

I’ve just done a google search and discovered another 3 I didn’t know existed.

Sixth Freedom – Not formally part of the original convention, this refers to a state’s right to carry traffic between two other countries via an airport in its own territory.

Seventh Freedom – Also an unofficial extension, this covers the right to operate stand-alone services between two other countries.

Eighth Freedom – Another unofficial extension of the treaty, this is sometimes also refered to as “cabotage” rights. This refers to the carriage of passengers and cargo within the borders of another country.

Mongu, I misread your posting and assumed they were planning to stop EU airlines from operating within other EU countries.

If anyone is wondering what the five freedoms are…

First Freedom – The right to fly across another country without landing (sometimes called transit freedom).

Second Freedom – The right to land in another country for purposes other than carrying passengers, such as re-fueling or maintenance (usually first and second freedoms are considered as temporary flight, not a schedule flight).

Third Freedom – The right to land in another country from their own country for purpose of commercial services.

Fourth Freedom – The right to fly from another country to their own country for purpose of commercial services.

Fifth Freedom – Sometimes refered to as “beyond right” . This freedom enables airlines to carry passengers to one country and then fly on to another country (rather than back to their own). This freedom divided into two categories:
Intermediate Fifth Freedom is the right to carry from the third country to second country.
Beyond Fifth Freedom is the right to carry from second country to the third country.

(The Third and Fourth Freedoms stand together as the basis for commercial services, providing the rights to load and unload passengers, mail and cargo in another country.)

    Zurich-Cincinatti KL8024 11:20-15:10 Nonstop

So presumably they do a return flight as well. Found using a search on Google using ‘flight from Cincinatti to Zurich’.

Bearing in mind that they fly old crates (aka lovely aeroplanes to the readers of FlyPast!) they have an astonishing statistic for keeping their pilots. Very few pilots ever leave. Perhaps they are held at gunpoint or are just plain happy!

Doesn’t this contravene fifth freedom rights under the Chicago Convention?

Very sensible EGNM. Get yourself on the inside of a company who will offer sponsorships. JMC are going to be doing this through the ATP Academy. Other airlines are FlyBe, Air2000, Air Atlantique/Atlantic Airways, BA, etc. In fact, Air Atlantique in Coventry would be a very good one to try to get inside as they have some very interesting flying work. At the moment I imagine they are negotiating the contract for the oil clean up work spraying dispersant off north-west Spain.

It takes years with other airlines to DEP (direct entry pilot) into major carriers such as Qantas and JAL. I would be most interested for Monster to give us a brief career history before landing such a plum job as Emirates. You can bet he has served his ‘apprenticeship’ for many years.
In the UK less than 10% of pilots who try to progress from private aviation to commercial aviation succeed in getting a job (and the UK statistics are better than most other countries!). The rest carry immense debts for many years.

I didn’t realise EZY had stopped the LPL-LTN run.

Mongu – is there any news on whether Euromanx might start looking at brigning their flight operations in house with their own kit and crews? I have job hunting friends who would be keen to get a foot in the door.

Don’t know the actual facts about the Boeing but our company A330’s can operate with one wingtip missing but not both!!!
I can only imagine that this is the situation in the picture above but the same logic applies to the Boeing. i only discovered this after a MYT A330 hit a wingtip on a lighting pole in Paphos a few months ago and had to operate back with a tip missing.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-11-02 AT 10:26 PM (GMT)]I spoke to SkyCruiser on the phone today and he plans to respond to this when he gets back from his flight today. A good friend of his was ‘guaranteed’ he would get a job after training with Cabair, needless to say he is still looking now. I really hated to put a downer on your plans but I felt I must warn you about the real situation out there. On that note, there are so many CPL’s out there with no jobs that just about all the instructor vacancies have now gone as people try to keep current for the upturn in the market, when it eventually happens. I strongly recommend that you start monitoring the wannabees forum on http://www.pprune.org to get a feel for the current climate in commercial aviation.
You say in your post you would be prepared to fly for anyone, anywhere to get a start. Well the regrettable truth is you stand very little chance of getting a job with anyone, anywhere when you come out of Cranfield/Oxford with about 200 hours and no practical experience. Go ahead with the training BUT you must budget for several years of hours building and IR renewals before you are likely to earn a low paid job in a remote part of the country.
I know this seems really harsh but I hate to think of you spending all that cash without knowing the truth about the current job hunting market.

    Regards
    Ian

PS If you can get onto that BA cadetship that is probably your best chance of succeeding.
