Sad news indeed. A mate of mine had only just left his Atlantic Airlines job on the Electra to join EAL on the B732 so he’ll be out on his ear now.

Turboprop aircraft are frequently flown around the isalnds where the very worst weather occurs. The Saab 340 also had a 35 knot crosswind limit and we would frequently make Cat 1 approaches down to minimums with 35 knots accross the runway in driving rain and horrendous turbulence as the wind always seemed to be coming off the cliffs. I’ve personally always found jet operations far less scary (probably largely due to the inertia thing that Moondance mentioned earlier coupled with a lower crosswind limit, 30 knots). I notice that the A340 has a crosswind limit of 27 knots gusting 33. I have no problem with the lower limit as I am quite happy to concede to being one of lifes cowards!

One other thing to add about crosswind take offs – usually you would add into wind aileron for a crosswind take off, however if you apply more than 2 units (very little) aileron on a 757 (or any Boeing) you will get roll spoiler deploying on the upwind wing. This is a bad thing as take off is the time to be creating lift not destroying it!

I think the Shed is a perfect example of an aircraft designed with an exact purpose in mind and for that it is simply brilliant. It is never going to be legitimately called pretty but this colour scheme (along with Aurigny’s sheds painted up in their new livery) looks excellent. Simplicity works a treat.

In fact I like this colour scheme so much I nearly accidentally said something nice about the ATP picture the other day…but I didn’t! I managed to get a reality check!

    One great looking aeroplane.

I don’t know the purpose of the cable hanging off the top of the fin but the item at the back end of it will be a cone. When I used to tow gliders we used a funnell just before the end of the rope. This had the effect of stabilising the rope when there was no load on it and stopped it swinging all over the place.

The PAPI only shows that the position the photograph was taken from is too low. The aircraft is above the line from the camera to the PAPIs so they may well be seeing 2 reds and 2 whites.

Usually a fairing gets placed on the front which prevents air passing through the core. All the air gets passed down the bypass duct so the engine will windmill.

Don’t worry Skylinerworld, you’ve got good input to make…but as Greekdude says it’s probably better orientated towards existing topics. Keep posting.

IF your fathers mate is paying the duty on these fags and booze then there is no way he can justify the cost of flying a light aircraft overseas to get them. Be very careful what you say here because threads like this are very interesting to HM Customs and Excise. Once again, if this was a legitimate way of subsidising flying everyone would be at it. Continue to post about these things and expect a knock on your door.
