I remember the WWII Veteran, he went as white as a ghost. I’ll have to admit to being a bit shaken. The prop had settled on my backside and the lad had jumped out and was lying on the taxiway screaming his head off. I got out and simply sat on the deck in total shock; it was a two seater vehicle so there was no ‘frozen’ guy to be lifted out…….sorry, pub story.
Thanks very much for sharing this story!
I thought that was in store and is up for sale?
Flying Sea Princes? NONE!
From memory, the ‘Fly suffered some damage to its propeller and engine. However, it was repaired in time for displays during the 1996 airshow season.
There was a programme made about Yeovilton, and they covered this incident briefly. In the back of WB271 was a former Firefly pilot, and according to the programme he won a flight in a raffle.
The words on the footage were “The flight never quite made it, taxiing out for take-off, the Firefly hit a van.”
I also heard at the time that one of the guys was frozen completely solid, and had to be lifted out of the Rascal still in the ‘sitting’ position.
HTH,
Mark
Stringbag,
Thank’s for that. The only reason I asked about the Sea Hawk is that I heard somewhere that there was one at Duxford getting ‘fixed’ up ??
That was the RNHF’s original Sea Hawk WV908 Richy, receiving some attention from the Aircraft Restoration Company.
It was roaded back to Yeovilton earlier this month, check out the full story here.
Hi,
Please correct me if I am wrong here 😀
Isn’t the RNHF getting a second Sea Hawk and getting a second Sea Fury ?
Richy.
I doubt they are getting another Sea Hawk Rich, I can’t think of (m)any possible candidates. They do have a second airframe, WV911 which won’t fly again due to lack of paperwork.
The second Sea Fury is right, although technically it’s their third with VR930 and spares cab T.20 VZ345 already on board.
The local paper (he lived in Lymington) reported his death on Friday with a sizeable article. RIP Mr Duke.
These are really nice pictures. What lens did you use for it?
Thanks for the feedback! 🙂
All those that appear before the windsock image were shot using a Sigma 18-50mm lens.
After and including the sock shot, up until the D30-produced image were all taken through a Canon EF 75-300mm USM lens on a Canon D60.
HTH,
Mark
I saw him and his wife at Exeter several times over the past few years.
Very friendly and a truly great gentleman.
Condolences to Gwen and his family and friends.
Some dodgy footage of one of his displays in the P-51D Mustang can be found on youtube…

edit – thanks ‘Squadronleader’ for the feedback.
I’m told it’s been completely stripped and is now basically a shell.
If you care to look at the Display Season page on the website you’ll see that, new for 2007, WK608 is actually listed for a couple of shows already. Though there are a couple of RN-marked Chippies still flying in this country WK608 is the ONLY aircraft still in RN service.
Yes I saw that.
Hopefully these planned displays will result in more bookings in the future(partipication subject to training commitments etc).
Some great shots over there.
It would be good to see the RNHF Chippie appear at more shows, there can’t be many RN-liveried Chippies left in the UK.
I believe it’s coming in via Southampton Docks, not Felixstowe.
There’s thousands of containers stored on the quayside, surrounding areas and on the ship’s themselves, so it may still be here awaiting delivery. Incidentially, this would be the third Sea Fury to pass through the Docks, and I haven’t seen any of them 🙂
I’m sure Lee Howard will be around shortly to explain further.
Hunter T.8C XJ615 is now at Exeter where it is looked after by Hunter Flying.
T.7 XL587 is with Hawker Hunter Aviation at Scampton.
I think the MiG 21 is at Coventry?
