I know senility is setting in, but I’d swear that there was a post suggesting the use of the replicas as gate guardians after the film is complete – particularly at Scampton.

And I’m sure I replied pointing out that the replicas might not be full size 3D.

    Now there is nothing.

Please tell me I’m not going mad?

    Moggy

I think u must be Moggy Ol’ Chap, you have only posted twice on this thread and neither posts mention size of replica Lancasters: Your posts are quoted below kind sir:

The countdown starts to the first ‘dogcentric’ posting…..

    and

It is therefore now upto you to decide if u are loosing your marbles!!

Bex – when they were scrapping Phantoms at Wattisham the engine feet were cut out of the fuselage and stenciled with the aircraft serial number
so Whitehall could verify they were ‘dead’ . It was down to the way they were funded – nothing ‘Moulder and Scully’ about it!

Thanks David, was just thinking out loud and kinda hoping I was right 😉 Bex

    A theory

I have a theory folks, see what u think of it:

If the RAF like an aircraft, they bend over backwards to help, Vulcans Lightnings Canberras for example flown into the nearest airfields for their new owners but if they didnt like an aircraft like the Phantom, they scrapped them so quick it was virtually impossible to get one.

    Thoughts anyone?

Its a bit more complex than that !

The fate of F4’s was also decided by the original sale contract from the US Government, even if there had been no treaty with the east they would have pretty much met the same fate, I think they were not so much bought as leased, although it is nonsense, that was the rules they were acquired under.

Similarly other redundant US airframes have the same problems, eg the previously discussed airframes at Headcorn which are still US property and could potentially corrode someone to death !

Naturally the US is afraid someone may use its military material against them, as opposed to using it against themselves.

Thanks for clearing that up, not fair is it? Specially as u see piccies of Davis Monthon and u see lines and lines of aircraft sat there 🙁

Doesnt it make you sick, F4’s were an important part of our air force history and we’re not allowed to save them. I believe scrap F4’s had to be left outside so the Russian sats could keep an eye on them, so why couldnt the RAF dish em out to museum’s minus engines and airframes careful sliced in the right places? Im just curious now. Bex

    56 or 74 Sqn

Well you could go for 56 Sqn nice bright red tail and a cracking Sqn insignia or go for 74 Sqn, ok so its bare metal with black tail but it does look quite sweet. Bex

Well the model is complete and undercoated, I still havent decided on the wing tanks yet. Once shes finished she will be verticle (ish) on the ceiling until I get my Victor K2 built then she will be moved along with my Buccaneer for air 2 air refuel across the ceiling :d I havent told the other half about this yet LoL Once completed she will be posted over on Models with my others.

TO all who have provided info & photos, Im very grateful for all your help.

74 Sqn began to exchange its F3s for F6s in August 1966, being the first squadron to receive full production-standard aircraft. The first was XR768 which arrived on August 1.
(According to “Lightning” by Bryan Philpott)

Brilliant, thanks Papa Lima Im glad I decided to ask for a pic, getting a Lighting History lesson on the side out of it. Thanks again Bex

I didnt even know 74 used F6’s, learn something new every day;)

Neither did I until I started the kit earlier, idiot guide gave me a choice, an F2A of 92 Sqn June 1974 or F6 of 74 Sqn Aug 1970 Singapore. XR773 which I believe now belongs to Mike Beachyhead. Bex
