What is the correct term to use when a major religion changes its position on something?

Didn’t the Catholic Church at one time support the belief that the Sun orbited the Earth? Didn’t the same religion persecute those that suggested, correctly, that the Earth actually orbited the Sun?

If it doesn’t say in the Bible ‘the Sun orbits the Earth’ (and I don’t suppose that it does) then why did the Catholic Church support this position? Was it the accepted ‘scientific’ position? Why does the Catholic Church now support the opposite view?

It seems a little unfair to criticise ‘science’ for changing its position when major religions do exactly the same.

The Roman Catholic Church has engaged in many things that go counter to what Jesus said those on earth representing him are to do.
It is run by men and mankind as a whole is extremely far from perfect.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Western civilization became as a whole increasingly stupid for quite some time with the RC church, at times, leading the way.
Power corrupts and and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Prayer is nothing but a religious person wanting to show they care & think by chanting magic spells that they can help matters, yet requires no actual effort on their part whatsoever. If I was to say “I’ll peel a grape for you” it would actually require more effort, but the ultimate result would be the same: You wouldn’t feel any different, it wouldn’t affect anything (except the grape I just peeled), but you get to sanctimoniously appear like you care. It is the most insincere bullcrap you could possibly do & quite frankly it insults peoples intelligence.

btw, Nice try playing the persecution card, but placing facts in front of willfully ignorant idiots isn’t persecution, it’s called facing reality.

There now do you feel better
You repeat, to the point of being ludicrous, the same fatuous rhetoric but then if that is all you have, have at it.
Have a nice day.

Rather like a moth to a light bulb, wouldn’t you say?

Hmmm, probably in the same way scientists are attracted to new theories despite the lack of anything close to facts supporting the theory.

“Ooooooooooooohhhh– PRETTY! I cannot resist. Oooooh!

For those among us who still don’t get it…

Scientists use the word theory in a way that differs from its usage in everyday speech.

Yes, it is called counterintuitive drivel on a good day and nonsense on all others.

It must have been a dark day when leading scientists, or at least ones who thought they were leading, decided that the true meaning of the word theory makes our semi-educated guesses look bad so let’s just change the meaning of the word; It is a lie but the masses are too stupid to notice.

Read any of the books I listed and they will give you the answer to most of those questions, to call the works of Einstein, Darwin and Hawking fiction, well it just beggars belief, and i’m sorry but you have no capacity to understand what those scientist are saying, better if you start with Janet & john books and see how you get on with them first
Do you know John I really thought you were taking the p!ss for a laugh but after that post I realise now that you not.

Really?
Absolute answers?

Proof does not equal truth.

Just as in court, proof in science does not equal truth. No scientist will ever claim that a theory is true. What they will do is state that the evidence agrees with the theory. Of course, sometimes new evidence shows up that we didn’t have before. Then in science, as in law, we will reach a new conclusion.

Be careful though. You’d be really wrong if you thought scientists didn’t have confidence in their ideas. Knowing that something may change, and believing strongly that right now there is no better answer than the accepted one, are not mutually exclusive points of view.—- (That last point is the exact method used by confidence men to sucker marks.)

Genesis 22:5 & 22:8. I thought you said you had read this book?

Hmmm, you said — Why? The guy clearly instructs people in the bible to kill their own children. Why wouldn’t you do it?

You do realize people is plural or are you so blinded by hate such items are irrelevant to your distaste for the Christian belief.

4 On the third day — Abraham lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the place from afar;
5 and Abraham saith unto his young men, `Remain by yourselves here with the ass, and I and the youth go yonder and worship, and turn back unto you.’
6 And Abraham taketh the wood of the burnt-offering, and placeth on Isaac his son, and he taketh in his hand the fire, and the knife; and they go on both of them together.
7 And Isaac speaketh unto Abraham his father, and saith, `My father,’ and he saith, `Here [am] I, my son.’ And he saith, `Lo, the fire and the wood, and where the lamb for a burnt-offering?’
8 and Abraham saith, `God doth provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son;’ and they go on both of them together.
9 And they come in unto the place of which God hath spoken to him, and there Abraham buildeth the altar, and arrangeth the wood, and bindeth Isaac his son, and placeth him upon the altar above the wood;
10 and Abraham putteth forth his hand, and taketh the knife — to slaughter his son.
11 And the messenger of Jehovah calleth unto him from the heavens, and saith, `Abraham, Abraham;’ and he saith, `Here [am] I;’
12 and He saith, `Put not forth thine hand unto the youth, nor do anything to him, for now I have known that thou art fearing God, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only one, from Me.’
13 And Abraham lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, a ram behind, seized in a thicket by its horns; and Abraham goeth, and taketh the ram, and causeth it to ascend for a burnt-offering instead of his son;
14 and Abraham calleth the name of that place `Jehovah-Jireh,’ because it is said this day in the mount, `Jehovah doth provide.’
15 And the messenger of Jehovah calleth unto Abraham a second time from the heavens,
16 and saith, `By Myself I have sworn — the affirmation of Jehovah — that because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only one —
17 that blessing I bless thee, and multiplying I multiply thy seed as stars of the heavens, and as sand which [is] on the sea-shore; and thy seed doth possess the gate of his enemies;
18 and blessed themselves in thy seed have all nations of the earth, because that thou hast hearkened to My voice.’

God did that once to see if Abraham”s faith was strong enough for him to serve what God wanted him to do.
It was and the sacrifice DID NOT take place.

All you have given is your opinion on out of context words of the Bible, and mostly just empty opinion.
OK — what is really your point or do you think running a strawman hustle is going work? If that makes you happy, have at it.

Straw Man is one of the commonest of fallacies. It is endemic in public debates on politics, ethics, and religion. A straw man argument occurs in the context of a debate―formal or informal―when one side attacks a position―the “straw man”―not held by the other side, then acts as though the other side’s position has been refuted.

You remind me of christians who pop verses out of context, also ignoring basic grammar to twist sentences meaning, to serve what ever man-made dogma they worship regardless of what the Bible says in context.

RpR, forgive me for appointing you god’s spokesman here, but as you seem to know a little bit about his thinking you might be able to enlighten me.

First, I truly wish you had not lost the one you loved and that the fact she died was in such miserable manner.

That said.

God does not go around giving persons misery. (I am not going to say that there could be some truly evil people God deals with directly but that is not the norm. I.e. one does not get punished for ones sins while alive on earth. Anyone that says one does is either a moron or lying.

I am going to make this as short as possible due to the fact that the items that affect one’s life are like a huge complex mathematical equation, i.e. the end result is massive and complex but when broken down is mostly a collection of simple arithmetic equations that are in series, not parallel.

Why did she get cancer?
This is not meant to be funny but only God really knows but just as hemophiliacs do not make themselves that way, their ancestors started that ball rolling downhill. Most probably something in her ancestry started the ball rolling that made he susceptible.

Does God intercede on behalf of some and not others, yes.
I can personally attest to that which makes no sense to me because I have not lived what anyone would call a “good” Christian life, yet the last surgeon who worked on me told me during my last visit that he told all his associates about me because there was no logical reason for him to be checking me out 100 per cent recovered as I should have been in physical therapy for months and have had high percent disability.

All but one of Jesus disciples died horrible deaths, and were told this before Jesus left.
Why?
I can give possible reasons that psychologist could understand but that is still an opinion based on a semi-educated guess.

Too many preachers, far, far, far too many, go around preaching that God (Jesus) is love blah, blah, blah totally ignoring the hundreds of passages in the New Testament that say life is a bitch, always has been and always will be.
But it does also say as one faith grows, the ability to deal with the reality of life grows. That does not mean life is a bed or roses but God may kill some of the weeds of life before they foul one’s garden.

Moggy I truly wish I could give you the answer you wish to hear but I cannot. I did not get to the point of faith I am at now decades ago, it was a process of listening and reading and praying. Some prayers coming from personal misery.
You may ridicule this if you prefer but I do pray for all those I associate with whether direct or indirect and all I can really do for you is to pray that eases your sadness.

Godspeed Moggy
