Russia: No Plans to Pull Out of INF Treaty
    MOSCOW, May 3 (RIA Novosti)

Russia has no plans to pull out of the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty in response to a European missile defense system, the chief of the General Staff said on Thursday.

“We are not considering yet the issue of withdrawing from the treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles,” Army Gen. Nikolai Makarov said at a missile defense conference in Moscow.

Itz not doing any good to Russia by sticking on with the INF.

Sooner or later the missile defense will come up. That is for sure. It would be better for Russia to start developing new IRBM as Czech & Romania needs some real good stuff as its out of range for Iskander-M.

The earlier Russia realize that the stupid talks will have no takers, the better. Last year also they talked about the threat to deploy the Iskander system. This year they got the reply for their talk.

    Russia Repeats Iskander Deployment Threat
    02/08/2011
    MOSCOW, August 2 (RIA Novosti)

The Russian Defense Ministry is planning to buy up to 120 Iskander-M tactical missile systems, Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Dmitry Bulgakov said.

“We purchased six [Iskander] systems in 2010, and plan to acquire up to 120 more,” Bulgakov told a news conference in Moscow on Monday.

The Iskander-M system (NATO reporting name SS-26 Stone) is a mobile theater missile system equipped with two solid-propellant single-stage 9M723K1 guided missiles with “quasi-ballistic” capability.

The missiles have a range of 400 km (250 miles) and can reportedly carry conventional and nuclear warheads.

According to the Moscow Centre for Strategy and Technology Analysis, the Iskander-M system was combat-tested in the brief war with Georgia in August 2008, and it proved highly effective in destroying military targets and infrastructure.

Russia threatened to deploy Iskander-M tactical missiles in its Kaliningrad Region, which borders NATO members Poland and Lithuania, if the alliance placed elements of its proposed “missile shield” close to Russian borders.

Russia Does Not Rule Out Preemptive Missile Defense Strike
    03/05/2012
    MOSCOW, May 3 (RIA Novosti)

Russia does not exclude preemptive use of weapons against [NATO] missile defense systems in Europe but only as a last resort, the Russian General Staff said on Thursday at a missile defense conference in Moscow.

“The placement of new strike weapons in the south and northwest of Russia against [NATO] missile defense components, including the deployment of Iskander missile systems in Kaliningrad region is one possible way of incapacitating the European missile defense infrastructure,” Chief of the General Staff Nikolai Makarov said.

Taking into account the “destabilizing nature of the missile defense system… the decision on the pre-emptive use of available weapons will be made during an aggravation of the situation,” he said.

That blog always has interesting articles full of details, but sometimes I don’t know where the facts end and Prasun Sengupta’s fabrications begin. Thankfully everything seems accurate in this case…

that happens but in his case i think it has more to do with some personal matters with certain forum and members that spread out. whatever it is, it does not matter. We don’t have to take everything on face value and can crosscheck it with other sources or when time comes we can refer back to see the accuracy of his reporting. But approaching his blog with a prior biased mentality is what I don’t do…

USN begs to differ re. the missile, I think. As do most operators of Harrier or F-35 capable LHA/D (RAM, mostly, if a SAM at all)

76: No, just a big a$$ AAA/ASuW gun that is available. If need be it could be combination with Oto Melara’s Dart/Davide/Strales. I think there’s just the two stern positions where you could park a gun on Vikramaditya now…

But Indian Navy cannot be compared, especially to the like of US.
Some Indians still think Indian Navy have a never ending list of combatants. But in reality, if we try attaching the combatants for INS Vikramaditya & IAC, like the USN…there won’t be any good ships left in the Navy for other duties.

There is lack of combatants and support vessels in the Navy for expansion but the bigg arses are playing with multi-billion dollar deal for P-8 as if everything else is perfect. Not a single order for major surface combatants have gone for the last few years and the guys are in the never ending thinking process of planning for project A, B, C, D… :dev2:

For that reason alone, I prefer our carriers to have its own medium-long range or close-in AD weapons.

There is enough space in the stern of INS Vikramadity as you mentioned. But my personal view is it would be a waste to install artillery over there as IN don’t have good enough ships with decent load of AD missiles to cover a carrier ar$e. I’d prefer AD missiles instead of guns.

I think that should be kilometres.

yes, the original Russian text mentions it as Km, where as American google mentioned it in their units after translation :p

Yes it can be changed in a very short time.It happens always.Even between AC and Diesel traction.

the talk was about what if engine fails in between. And not changing the engine at service depot or at station.

Since you counted 12 TELs and 12 reloaders that means you are comparing at Brigade level. Not battery level. At Brigade level Prithvi has 15 TELs and 75 missiles.

first of all sorry, I only now re-read what I’d typed last time. I’ll type it little more clearly now.
Its a battery and not battalion. So a battery consists of 6 types of vehicles and 8 vehicles in total. Not 10 as I wrongly said earlier.

The figure will look somewhat like this with full compliment of vehicles.
    Battery – 8 vehicles (2 TEL + 2 RL + 4 support) (8 x missiles)
    Battalion – 16 vehicles (4 x TEL + 4 x RL + 8 support) (16 x missiles)

The number of missiles per battery can be increased and possibly will get increased after they have established all the planned brigades. Right now they seems to be concentrating on establishing the Brigades with just adequate number of missiles.

and a simple question remain for a battery of Prithvi, how many vehicles in total?

Old diagram. And as I said the dubious comparisons panel :p[after dubious goals panel ]votes you number one as you are comparing two missiles from two different generations.

Yes that diagram was basically meant for the liquid fueled Prithvi and I did mention it. For SS350 the number of support vehicles will reduce.

    For liiquid fueled Prithvi
    Missile launcher + Missile transporter
    +
    1) warhead carrier vehicle
    2) launch control centre
    3) power supply vehicle
    4) safety vehicle
    5) mechanical workshop vehicle
    6) oxidiser carrier vehicle
    7) oxidiser transfer vehicle
    8) mobile crane
    9) missile handling trolley
    10) cable laying vehicle
    11) mosaic
    12) air compresssor vehicle
    13) air stroage vehicle
    14) fuel transfer vehicle
    15) fuel carrier vehicle

The above is from the spec we see for the liquid fueled Prithvi. It needs 15 support vehicles. If those 15 vehicles are meant for a battery or a battalion I don’t know, Maybe you can tell me.

For the solid fueled SS350 we can reduce 6 vehicles thatz needed for SS150 and SS250. So that will be 9 support vehicles. But here again we can reduce the numbers if we have a good reload vehicle with a transfer crane. It will allow us to reduce the support vehicles to 7.

Pls do the math.BTW I hope you know the difference between a battery and a battalion.

Who set the limit at 10 vehicles? Is that some sort of international standard?

yup there ws a mistake w.r.t to battery, battalion and brigade earlier I’ve corrected it. Read above
Regarding the number of vehicles, there is no standard. But wanted to know with just 10 vehicles how much of a punch a Prithvi system (not missile as such) can make. Actually its 8 vehicles per battery for the Iskander system and that is pretty low with just 4 support vehicles.

So a battery will be delivering ~4 tons to 480Km or ~6.4 tons to 400Km from a foot print of just 8 vehicles.

Is there any end to better? We could have something better than Iskander TEL no?What matters is Prithvi TEL is quite good for its purpose.

My main problem with the Prrithvi TEL is that it is a regular truck and not wide as the MAZ or BAZ. Smerch was another mess. From a good 8×8 MAZ platform, it is now on a Tatra. Maybe Tatra was bribing back then also?:dev2:
Same case with Brahmos…..i cant understand why this fascination with Tatra when a better platform is available. Those Tatras are never going to give the capability of the MAZ.

    Okay this takes the cake.

Which of these looks like a sugar or grain carrier to you??
If it does so then may be I will buy this as my next family sedan.:D

I was not talking about the Prithvi launchers in that case. But that of Agni series and Agni 3

If this is the kind or size of TEL that DRDO is planning….. I’d prefer rail-mobile. 😀

Btw, your choice for family sedan is of very bad taste. 😉

And the IAC 2/3 will be CATOBAR as well. China is held back by the lack of catapult technology in Russia.

there is no confirmation regarding catapult on IAC2/3. There is still no definite specification for the ship.

China is unlikely to be held up due to non availability of catapult technology from Russia. Russia already have steam catapult technology and they even tested it and passed the state acceptance trials.
China can be held up only if Russians don’t want to transfer that steam catapult technology. Or it may just be that Chinese are not interested in steam cat technology.
