Neustrashimy underarmed?! You’re joking. All it may need are some Uran’s amidship. Don’t think changing over to Shtil is worth the cots/effort. Particulalry since in the Black Sea, this ship will operated under cover of land-based avaiation.
The most underarmed would be Udaloy (I) which dont have their full complement of Klinok (and make do in part with glorified manpads instead).
Did it sound like a joke to you?
Neustrishimy class might be a good ASW frigate but she is a sailing turkey without land-based air-cover and would drain upon the resources of other ships in a crisis environment. The short ranged Klinok & Kashtan is not going to give a 2nd thought for any aircrafts. They can even fly overhead and drop dumb bombs out of coverage of the shrot-ranged missiles. I firmly believe the two ships has to be given a decent medium-range AD cover. Its not good to depend on land-based aviation.
moreover, Black sea fleets area of operation is not just Black sea, it included the Black sea & the Mediterranean.
But, why do you think that changing over to Shtil is not worth & cost-effective?
Two new photos of Pr. 22350 model from IMDS 2011, second shows VLS arrangement. It seems that some reserve for future instalations is left.

BTW, what type of radar is on the top of main mast?
Thanks for the new pictures. It pretty much clears a lot of doubt as it gives a clear size comparison of silo hatches.
From the picture its clear the silos are at least theoretically of same dia. It mean either the ship is loaded with 44 silos of identical length (unlikely) or 28 of same dia but of shorter length, meant for AD missiles only. It means underneath the hatch there could be 4 small launchers, which gives us a decent AD load of 112 x missiles. ๐
So finally a Russian frigate finally crossed a ton (cricket ton ;)). And that is a deadly load of AD missiles for this class of ships. So finally there is something for me to cheer about this ship, a turnaround from my earlier very skeptical stance. But they should have made the hanger facility for two helos and designed the ship for a 6,000nm range. ๐
So the AD & Strike package looks like this
16 x Yakhont/Klub
112 x 9m96e/9m96e2
64 x Sosna
The sonar dome is very huge and strikingly similar in shape and probably in size to that of the Udaloy class. Maybe its a confirmation that pr.22350 is going to be the base of next destroyer. In an earlier article the SDB guys had mentioned that the Pr.22350 design can be scaled upto 8,000t destroyer, something that was not possible with the pr.11356 design.
Emile might know his aerodynamics. He might be poor in English. But one thing I am sure of after reading his posts is that he has NO sense of how to talk to other humans.
He has indirectly called people willing to discuss with him fools.
My hats of to people who have the courage and patience to tolerate such idiocy.
Best,

Take it easy man. Emile may not be that rude or bad as you are thinking. He could be the victim of the translator that he is using. See the reply he gave you for your “caution”. Only God knows what the translation he got for your message. So lets not brand others as bad for what could be the handy work of the translator. I know it would be pretty hard for the posters to hear rude words, but lets also consider the “invisible hand” behind those rude words and try to ignore it.
LOL!..
@emileWhat raids13 really said is that YOU or YOUR posting style here on this forum is very RUDE.
I feel the same way.
There are many misunderstanding between you and latenlazy.
Now pls try to improve your way of posting to other members here, especialy if they only asking some questions..
No need to attract any moderators attension.
As i said above, it maybe the translator who is behind all these. I don’t know what his translator would tell him what I wrote. Maybe I’m next in line for a taste of the translator? ๐
Delivery of the Indian Navy Missile (BRAHMOS) Frigates for which a contract was signed in 2006 will be delayed, delivery date unknown and cost over run of $100 million. Rosboronexport has been asked for this sum.
Nerpa to be delivered to IN by year end.
Russian companies will bid for Indian Navy’s next generation Submarine purchase estimated value $11 Billion. However going by the trend in delays and price increases I can not see how they can be percieved in good light.
Russians will likely cover the cost for the cost overrun. But there is not much of time delay. Overall, its far better than what the Indian yards have been producing. Consider the case of P17, P15, P15A etc. MDL never had financial trouble like the Yantar. Where as Yantar was is real bad shape and many had criticized for giving order to built it there instead of Baltisky yard. But since the time funds was injected into the yard, they have produced and launched the 3 frigates at a faster pace than the top Indian yard MDL, for whom financing never seems like a problem.
Yantar is not a submarine specialist and the yard that may take the order to built the initial units are most likely to be Admirality or some other yards.
Shes already rusting the Vicky.
where?
I need more pictures than this, but oh well

I didn’t knew starborad stern had such an entry. No signs of any missile installation on the edges, so no missile installation there? They could have installed Duet or Palma there.
From our Vietnamese friends…. the over 6 feet tall Topio ๐
They should develop it more and make a soldier out of it to face-off any invading force. Is it just me, or anyone else also see some Putin touch to that blad head of this Vietnamese strongman?

Big Renovation Program for Russiaโs Black Sea Fleet
Mikhail BarabanFinally, two Project 11540 frigates of the Baltic Fleet, the Neustrashimyy and the Yaroslav Mudryy, are expected to be transferred to the Black Sea Fleet some time in 2011. The Yaroslav Mudryy was completed and delivered to the Russian Navy only last year.
The two 11540 frigates will definetely add comfort to the Black sea fleet considering the USN getting interested in the waters. Its was high time some decent ships were deputed to the Black sea fleet. These two frigates (if indeed) are going to be stationed in Black sea are in anticipation of the USN in the area in the near future. The three 11356 class will take another 3-4 years to come.
Of the two (as far as I’m aware) only the Yaroslav have 16 x Urans where as the Neustrishimy still doesn’t have the anti-shipping missiles. Also, these two frigates are armed with just short-range AD missiles confining it to the purely defensive role. This is going to be a handicap as they need to have the capablity of postering to the USN ships if the situation demands so in the future. So for any postering they need to have a decent AD capablity under which they can safely move around and keep any offensive assets at a safe distance. Considering that Sakshvilli is still in Georgia, we can gaurantee a 2nd Russo-Georgian bout and Unkil is sure to come in.
Neustrishimy frigates are probably the most underarmed ships (for its size) in the Russian Navy. I cant understand why they are not upgrading the ships with the Shtil-I missiles. Having two close/short range weapons looks really stupid. They need to remove the Klinok system from the ship and instead install the Shtil-I missiles in its place.
OK….just a touch and go piece from me, not perfect. Copy pasted to created this in short time. But this is the kind of upgrade that I would personally like to see for the Pr.11540. I have taken the Moskit variant model as the base for creating it so don’t get surprised to see the mid-ship almost empty. This is just to give an visual idea about the upgrade
1) 64-96 x Shtil-I missiles (replace Klinok & RBU-6000)
2) 16-24 x Klub(angled outward)/Uran(transverse) missiles installed mid-ship (consider the Korsar models)
3) 2 x RBU-6000 at the stern flanking the ASW service area.
4) 2 x Kashtan/palma
5)
This configuration is possible and won’t need limited modification to the ships decks but would give the ships a multi-role capablity.
——————————————-
What are the two domes thats installed on the sides of Yaroslav Mudryy? They are of almost the same size of the Kasthan command post. Is it EW equipments or additional command post for the AD missiles?
Also, I just like that sliced bow of the Neustrishimy class. Have a sort of beauty in that slicing. The same can be seen on Slava, Kirov (though not much prominent due to the size of the ship) and the Gepard class.
Reform of the Russian Navy in 2008-2011
Moscow Defense Brief 2/2011
Dmitry BoltenkovTwo series of frigates will be built; six Project 22350 ships (Admiral Flota Sovetskogo Soyuza Gorshkov class) to be built at the Severnaya Verf shipyards, and six modified Project 11356 (Admiral Grigorovich class) frigates to be built at the Yantar shipyards. After that the MoD will probably launch an entirely new class of frigates.
hmmm…what are these guys actually planning? This cannot be the 10,000t new destroyer earlier reported. That 10,000t destroyer has to be the Slava class sized ship with Nuclear propulsion.
But if the above statement of a new frigate to replace the pr.22350 is true, then its a shame and criminal, considering the pathetic state the Russian surface fleet is in.
The only consolation is the 12 frigates.
6 x Pr.11356
6 x Pr.22350

So, Mistral deal is happening. This link says transfer of technology is happening. It has damn better well happen.
They sure do make it sound like a done deal:
Part of interview, it shows the opposition from USC for the Mistral contract earlier..
ARMS Defence Technologies Review 5/2010
President of JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation Roman Trotsenko
Baltiysky Zavod and Severnaya VerfRecently Director General of “Yantar” shipyard pleaded the Federal Antimonopoly Service of the Russian Federation to check the compliance with law of some provisions of the State Defence Order concerning the deal on four French Mistral ships (amphibious assault ship, a type of helicopter carrier) for the Russian Navy. Can USC offer up-to-date ship of this class to the Russian navy?
Ships for the Navy should not be purchased abroad, but should be built in Russia. That’s why we suggest that these ships should be built at the Russian shipyards, which are in the structure of USC.
We think that our position over this question should be taken into consideration during negotiations with France and other states on the issues related to purchasing of amphibious assault ships. There are no complicated things in the construction. The Russian shipbuilders are ready to start producing these ships using USC productive facilities. Moreover, Russia has experience in building of such combat ships, let us remember the โIvan Rogovโ class landing ship. Another issue is that the Ministry of Defence failed to find the area where that ship could be used.
In case of the designing Russian version of the ship the total work period is going to be increased up to 18 months. Taking into account the urgency of the issue we developed and sent to the Minister of Defence A. Serdukov and Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy V. Vysotskiy a letter where we ask for opportunity to take up a license to build the Dokdo amphibious landing ships. Dokdo is assessed to be much more modern ship of this class than French Mistral. Dokdo is ahead of Mistral due to some main technical characteristics.
We estimate the construction of Dokdo in Russia about 450 million US dollars, at the same time the French Mistral ship costs 600 million Euro.We think that rationally the cheeper project should be selected.
We are intrinsically against with some official representatives from the Ministry of Defence that it will take longer time for Russian shipbuilders to produce the ship. The licenced construction of the Dokdo assault landing ship at the shipyards of USC will take 30 months. And USC guarantees this term.
The main advantage of this variant is that USC in cooperation with โDaewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltdโ has opportunity to acquire the license to build these ships in Russia.
The acquisition of French Mistral actually means acquisition from South Korea as the French shipyard belongs to the Korean STX company. But for Russia it is more profitable to build this ship in the framework of a Joint Venture on the Russian territory under the State’s control.
We hope that the Russian Ministry of Defence, taking into account the newly appeared alternative, will conduct open and fair tender on amphibious landing ships for the Russian Navy. We also express our hope that the Ministry of Defence will remain the main customer of the Russian shipyards for the Fleet.
They want to modernise their shipyards as they are inefficient in comparison to Western ones.
They are pretty capable of modernising their shipyards and have plans for that as well. But for some strange reason the guys at the top want outsiders to do the job like South Koreans to develope their far-easter shipyards etc.
Mistarl contract is for two reasons – political consideration and for cutting short the time. But the $1.7billion for cuting time is just stupid and very costly. What that funding I would have prefereed seeing new Pr.11356 being financed or getting all the Sovremennys & Udloys getting a decent upgrade with Shtil-I missiles.
from last years Arms 2010, there was an article to modernisse the shipyards and planed new ones by JSC SSTC
1) JSC BS Yantar modernisation
2) JSC Srednenevsky modernisation
3) New Far East yard (with 500m drydock & crane with upto 1500t capacity)
4) New facility at Kotlin island (The Kiev/Gorshkov sized carrier shown in the CG is interesting!) ๐
Added later – attached the full article for shipyard modernisation plan.
Seen at IMDS 2011 , Gorshkov FFG
Snake65 i could see lot of VLS cells on Gorshkov frigate , VLS cells even amid ship how many SAM and Anti-ship missiles does it carry ?
from the model it looks armed with
16 x Yakhont/Klub
28 x AD missiles ??
(AD missile loadout is confusing. The silo hatches number 28 in total. What does it mean?)
Is it any new VLS that can accomodate 2-3 missiles? But considering the diamerter of the missile and hatch it looks highly unlikely. So does it mean they have cut short the AD missiles at the foredeck from the 36 displayed earlier to just 28? :dev2:
What the hell are these guys playing?
Russian shipbuilders have set a technology record – SNSZ is building a composite only minesweeper (project 12700 Alexandrit). ( http://arms-tass.su/ )
Technological world record is set to Medium-Nevsky Shipyard (SNSZ), part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC). For the first time in the world are successfully implemented completely fill the composite hull of a vessel about 1,000 tons.
“The achievement of the designers and shipbuilders SNSZ hit not only in the Guinness Book of Records, but also all the specialized international publications as an important milestone in the development of non-metallic enclosure technology in shipbuilding,” – said on Saturday President of “USC” Roman Trotsenko, summing up the involvement of corporations in Fifth International Maritime Defence Show in St. Petersburg.
In turn, General Director of JSC “SNSZ” Vladimir Seredoho said that record was set in the shop, where we are working on housing project 12 700 minesweeper commissioned by the Russian Navy. “It will ship with a fully-art carbon-fiber casing, the method of composite infusion, advanced on the characteristics that all present and future projects of his class in the world” – he said.
Now lets see if the guys will atleast speed up small ships like the minesweepers and don’t play around with ones and twos. Here another image of the project12700, this was from Arms2010.
As things stand, it is the Tejas which has seen more upgrades & most importantly, unlike the reliance of the JF-17 project on external (from the Pakistani perspective) suppliers, like China and France (which backed out) and they are now looking to Italy, most of the critical avionic systems on the Tejas are designed and developed, locally.
I would like to differ. Only An inservice or an operational aircraft can be “upgraded” not an aircraft that is in development. An aircraft under development is always “under development”. Hope you got the what I am trying to convey.
M2K upgrade…
Compare with
Its way too costly no doubt. For that money, IAF would be better off buying new Su-30MKI.
But will it change the scores of the M2K w.r.t MiG-29??? Most Likely Not!!! ๐
1) Indian MiG-29s that fought and beat the M2K in the 80s was not a fully HOTAS aircraft! The current upgrade will give the MiG-29s the much needed full HOTAS capablity (if it has not yet been fully installed).
2) The upgrade is going to give higher fuel load to the 29s where as M2K upgrade hardly have any internal fuel addition.
Anyway you look at it, the M2K upgrade package is a ripoff compared to what the 29 package is giving. JMT
Few years earlier there was Ka-52 models being displayed with 16 x AntiTank missiles (rather than the 12 on the inservice variant), what happeded to that plan? When I saw that model, I really thought that it might be the definite variant that might enter the service by “equalling” itself with that of the Mi-28s own 16x anti-tank capablity. Any info?
