Both hangars 4 and 5 were initially closed to the public on Saturday due to large amounts of water, roof leak or otherwise I don’t know. Hangar 4 did open a little later in the morning but I never did check to see if 5 was open later.

Well she got a little wet on Saturday (6th) as she was parked up at Duxford for the (rather damp) air show.

Can’t put my hands of my reprint copy at the moment (I also have a signed/dedicated first edition too) so can’t compare them, but when looking through the reprint I was surprised to see a number of inaccurate picture captions in it, that I wasn’t aware of in the original (were they extra?). I was somewhat annoyed that the person (whose name escapes me at the moment) who published it didn’t get it proofed by someone who new the subject.

Found my 2nd edition (paperback) the other day, the problem pictures/captions are in the picture section twixt pages 86-104. It would appear that someone has inserted the wrong pictures in some places, with the captions refering to the pictures that were originally there – some poor editing in an otherwise great book.

Didn’t the Breitling Connie visit Duxford for a Legends show a few years ago?

One of them did any way as I stood next to it!

The MATS Connie was there in 1998, I also saw it at Cosford the month before.

My fav film of all time. I was an 8 year old when it came out and i was into ww2 and aircraft big time.

I too was into WW2 aeroplanes at the time (as I have been all my life, my dad had been taking me to air shows since I was a babe in arms) and was 16/17 when it was released, what with the coverage from another illustrated aircraft magazine I was eagerly awaitng its arrival at my local Odeon.

And another memory for those of my age. Do you remember the postcards from the film you could buy and then stick them into the photo album they also sold? I lost mine many years ago but recently got one from Ebay but missing one postcard.

I still have mine, with all the postcards attached – which I understand from a collectors point of view reduces its monetary value (so what).

Pan paperbacks also released a number of paperbacks to tie-in with the film (which Robert illustrates in his book) but they also produced one he missed, entitled Aircraft of the Battle of Britain by William Green. When I contacted Robert, eventually sending him my copy (along with a couple of others), he wrote to thank me on the back of one of those BoB postcards.

Classic Aircraft IIRC. I’ve got a copy of it around somewhere.

Yes, it was a WH Smith publication (1980).

I met Mike on a number of occasions (at air shows) and he always had time to talk, even to the likes of me 😮 –

Walk into any squadron ready room, GA pilots lounge, or BA office and a lot of people will have stories of trying to glue an Airfix at the dinner table after school.

That 99p kit led then to what they are today…

99p – I’m sure they were less than 2 bob when I first started building them (my first being the Airfix BP Defiant).

As Robert died before the reprint was brought out, there was no chance of him revising it. It’s good that it was made available again, I hope his widow received the royalties.

    Regards,

Pete, I think you’ll find that your (Pan) paperback (it was also produced in hardback, although I’ve never seen a copy) is, as you hinted Battle of Britain – The making of a film by Leonard Mosely, a very interesting read.

I myself spent three days (12th, 13th & 14th July) at Duxford, watching and photographing the making of Memphis Belle, some of the time on the fire dump (should I have admitted to that?).

    Whilst there I photographed:
    Sally B (G-BEDF – 485784) as 124232 DF-Q “Sally B”
    N17W (42-29782) as 124299 DF-X “C-Cup”
    N3703G (44-83546) as 124485 DF-A “Memphis Belle”
    F-BEEA (44-85643) as 124292 DF-U “Baby Ruth” and
    Pink Lady (F-AZDX – 448846) as 25703 DF-S “Mother & Country”

I had originally had the one day off work (I think the 12th was a Wednesday) and what with cancelled flights etc I phoned up my employers (very understanding) each of the first two nights and added the following day as a holiday.

On one of the days a film crew joined me on the fire dump filming a documentary about the making of the film and did I get a shock when watching it, to hear the sound of my auto-winder on the soundtrack.

And I can tell you, there is nothing quite like sitting on Duxford’s fire dump and 5 B-17s taking off one after the other and passing within a matter of yards (other than perhaps the Vulcan scramble I witnessed at one of the Finningley air shows).

    Sally B down as static….:(

Yes, unfortunately Elly has posted on the Sally B website that she won’t be flying again until next year.

Hello Bradburger its a shame i cant see any these videos of mark as im still on dial up here, …

    cheers from Terry

    Hi Terry

I’m also still on dial up with an ancient w98 system, but if the clips are short enough they don’t take toooo long to load, and the one linked to by Tony at BH (posted twixt yours and mine) is well worth the wait – although the sound isn’t up to much (at least on my system).

I’m just grateful that I never hear a certain R*g*r H******* commentating these days, he used to bore the pants off me with all his measurements and statistics, IMO never anything interesting to say.

The Guinot girl did seem to get over excited and noisy, perhaps if they just turned the volume down, but commentators do occasionally have something interesting to say

I must say that I do miss John Blake (does he still commentate?), I always enjoyed his commentaries.

Why? The Vulcan has absolutely no connection to Duxford or relevance to the concept of Flying legends.

It was in the 1970s that I remember having to sign something to the effect that I would not profit from any photographs that I took of the Spitfire and Hurricane at what was then Birmingham Science Museum.

Does ignorance play any part in Cosfords ticket conditions, I didn’t bother to read the back of mine 😉

Get there before the gates open, …….. I’ve been watching them do this for a long time.
