Unless the aircraft are breaking noise abatement procedures there’s not a lot of action that can be taken…
Actualy, you CAN’T break noise abatement procedures. Because they are not LAW. Only voluntary.
If you live in a village or anything larger, then 1000 feet (or glide clear rule) aplies. If you’re in the sticks, then it’s 500 feet. And no, you DON’T own the airspace above your house either.
Bottom line: You can do NOTHING (except move).
Thanks for your replies.
The commentator at the event said that the Speed Twin was developed for aerobatic training, and two engines were safer for this purpose than singles like the Yak 52.
That’s an interesting argument – the commentator was reading from the notes supplied by the pilot… most people would argue that low level aeros in a twin is much more dangerous than a single. In fact, I asked the pilot what his procedure would be for an engine failure whilst performing (all us display pilots have to account for all sort of failures at any point in a display by the way!), and his answer….. “I’d pull the throttle on both engines and execute a forced landing”…..
Steven: I have a big favour to ask – any chance I could steal the photo of the Yak/Cassutt to put on my web site (http://yakdisplay.com) – and if you feel like sending a reference on the Yak display – feel free: http://yakdisplay.com/references.shtml. Please reply email: nigel(at)yakdisplay.com
Nice shootin’!
The Yak 52…..is that how the gear stays when retracted? The nose wheel tyre is touching the belly skin.
Not quite. There’s a recess in the underside for the wheel…. Nice pics by the way…. even see me waving !
Oh are you Nigel Willson?
Regards
James
Well, I should know since I was inside the plane with pink smoke from yakdisplay.com…….
🙂
….Although the quality of this shot is crap, i wanted to put it up, as it is the 1st time 5 wingwalkers have flown at once, and also the 1st time coloured smoke has been used on a piston aircraft.
Err – not quite. The claim about being the first to use coloured smoke is out of date by 4 years.
I used coloured smoke in my display in 2003 in a Yak52…. and the last time I looked, a Yak52 is definitely a piston engined aircraft…..
Trust you’ll tell Guinot this, and their commentator who is making a mis-claimer about this fact!
Picture below, and you can see the original on the website: http://yakdisplay.com/gallery_photo2.shtml

😀
At least you’re not in the french machine in that pic
No! It’s me in the proper thing. Even though the prop does go backwards in your book!
Wasn’t advocating that any rules should be changed (if you read my post correctly)…
It just seemed “likely” that due to the spate of accidents in a very short space of time, all seemingly related to low level operations, it’s plausible that all aspects of this flight area may be looked into?
And I also heard from a reliable source that ground witnesses (pilots) also saw the event (unfortunately) sounded remarkably like the press story…. so whilst I do generally take the press with a pinch of salt… in this instance…. maybe they weren’t far off. (And by the way, my post didn’t make any judgement at all).
Now the secret is out of the bag as to who I am!
Really bad month as you say – not to mention the T67 in Suffolk also.
Don’t know the circumstances of the ’52 problem, but the T67 was reportedly doing low level aeros for friends/family (says the press).
Is it time rules were tightened up on low level stuff without sufficient training and testing for currency (aka Display Authorisations)? What do others think?
Rule 5 is not CLOSER than 500′ from any …. person vehicle vessel or structure (blah).
So, you can fly BELOW 500′ so long as you are 500′ AWAY horizontally, or diagonally from… blah….
Otherwise, how would display pilots practice legally to below 500′ without finding an airfield with a Rule 5 exemption every time??
Rivers are a good bet. Easy to spot obstructions on the open water.
Mind the birds though….
Who are you, a Policeman?
Why? Do you have a guilty conscience???
Which spitfire(s) do you fly?? 🙂
D
Ones that aren’t in bits……. and with a proper size prop…
I fly myself. Anything with wings usually.
Tigers to Spits and most things in between, along with a few one-offs, twitchy single seat taildraggers just to keep the fingers and toes busy!
Isn’t that Duxfords new control tower for the non ATC people? Or is the mystery of where R2D2 finally got laid to rest now solved?????? :diablo:
Yes…!
Unless you fly under them with 500′ clearance then, No!
Might need a submarine though…
