    mystery sub

    I have no idea. It was passing by when we were touring the Mighty Mo. I thought it looked too small to be a US sub but I have no idea what type of sub it is or who it belongs too.

    The floating radar station was towed down from the Alaskan coast for missile testing. I guess it costs over a billion dollars. They said we shouldn’t take pics of it so I took the most pics of it.

    I was told the amphibous assault ship is the USS Tripoli (LPH-10) and is modified and used for testing missiles in the Pacific. I found this on wikipedia so I guess the guy was right.

    She was decommissioned in 1995 and as of 2004, she was on loan to the Army, but remained laid up at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. In December 2006, the ship was towed to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where it now has a high-tech role as a launch platform with the nation’s developing ballistic missile defense program. Three times the ship was towed some 100 miles off shore and used to launch small ballistic missiles, which are then intercepted by Terminal High Altitude Area Defense Missiles, test-fired from the Pacific Missile Range Facility. The last test in the series was performed October 26, when the ship fired a “scud-like” missile, which was successfully intercepted. The ship will be towed back to the San Francisco Bay Area for the winter. Kaua’i lacks a suitable land-based launch site, and the costs of building one would far exceed the approximately $600,000 per year it costs to use the old warship, so the vessel will return to Pearl Harbor for a second series of tests in late spring 2008

    “Lose the torpedo tubes: waste of weight & space for this role.”

    I would also replace the Seawolf vertical launch system and the Exocet launchers for this role. I would Keep the two 30mm cannons and replace the 76mm cannon with another 30mm cannon.

    The French Durance Class would be a good replenishment ship but she can only handle one helicopter.

    “Also of interest is the sonic devise used to defend a cruise liner a while back.”

    I disagree 100%. Non lethal weapons let the pirates live to try again.

    One of the main problems is that ships are too slow to respond to emergency calls. When an emergency call comes in and your ship can only do 30 knots the pirates are long gone before you can respond. Private military contractors flying helicopters armed with 7.62mm gatling guns, 12.7mm machine guns, 20mm-30mm cannons or rocket launchers (missiles would be overkill) would make any pirate break off an attack and it would also free up enough time for other ships to respond to the scene. The main problem would be basing the helicopters close enough to make a difference. Would you try to base them on the coast of Somalia or would you try to make them ship based. Would this ship be a military vessel or a modified commercial vessel? Would you have enough supplies to have the ship stay on location long enough to make a difference? Maybe the best idea would be some sort of modified offshore oil rig where the helicopters, pilots and supplies can be based.

    Brazil and South Africa need to complete a BVRAAM missile to go with the A-Darter.

    This partnership could be very beneficial for both parties.

    Brazil could upgrade her forces with;
    Rooivalk attack helicopters
    Rooikat armoured fighting vehicles
    G-6 self propelled howitzers
    G5 towed howitzers
    G7 towed howitzers
    Umkhonto air defense missiles
    etc

    South Africa could upgrade her forces with;
    Astros II multiple rockey systems
    EMB-314 trainers
    EMB-145 / P99 patrol / ASW aircraft

    etc

    Damn; that is one ugly plane! Not ugly in a good way like the A-10 or the Su-25 but ugly in the worst way. It looks pregnant with the extra fuel tank bulging from its belly. Really disappointed in this bird. Looks like something that belongs back in the 1960s and not today!

    Dana

    why were the Dana Self propelled howitzers left? They don’t look damaged or anything. That is some nice kit to leave behind for the enemy. I can see why they left the worthless MT-LB and D30 but not systems like the Dana.

    I agree that modern SAMs should be their first priority. The American Avenger system, the Israeli Spyder system, and the American SL-AMRAAM system would all be perfect for Georgia since these systems are all mobile, advanced, and deadly.

    One supplier of combat aircraft people are forgetting is Taiwan. Taiwan has surplus F-5s that could be upgraded and F-CK-1 fighters. These fighters are not super modern but they would be effective point defense fighters armed with Python-5, Derby, or AMRAAM missiles. Russia could not really do anything to Taiwan since it is not recognized as an independent country and Russia already sells billions of dollars of military equipment to China so it would be some sweet revenge for Taiwan!

    “The West seems to be favouring Georgian demands for support for its ‘Territorial Integrity’ over the rights and wishes of the South Ossetians for independence, and over their preference for Moscow over Tbilisi.”

    Since Moscow is so concerned with self independence then Chechnya and Ingushetia would be independent countries.
