    Hi David
My father was an engine fitter in the RAF. He was out there from 1959 to 1962. I posted some RAF stuff over on WIX to spread them about a bit and to show our American chums something other than Mustangs!

My dad worked on engines, at Seletar, and we were there from 1959 – 1962 as well 😀

    Brian- really great pics!
Was this open to anyone to photograph and how do you find out about such an interesting photo possibility?

    David Taylor.

It’s open to anyone and advertised and arranged over on the UKAR Forum and cost £20 a head with proceeds going to the Northolt Heritage Project which will see the Battle of Britain Sector Ops room restored to as it was in 1939/40. Limited to about 70 people on a first come first served basis.

There is possibly another night photoshoot in March which I believe will be a helicopter theme.

    From Airsupply Web Page

The Yorkshire Air Show at Elvington for 2009 has been cancelled for financial reasons, and my more personal reasons.

Go to home page for possible personal reasons.

    1/1000 😮 1/1600 😮 😮 for static shots?

Drop your shutter speeds down. As a rule of thumb, the faster the aeroplane is moving, the faster the shutter speed.

At those shutter speeds for static shots there’s probably not enough light/information hitting the sensor hence the higher ISO numbers to compensate which in turn creates ‘grain/noise’ which in turn cuts down on the amount of sharpness in the image.

The next time you are out, as an experiment, put the camera on ‘AUTO’ (which I use all the time for static shots) and see what numbers it comes up with for shutter speeds and AV settings.

The UV filter could also be cutting down the amount light reaching the sensor. Take it off and try it.

With regards to the Hangers, how about having the doors open but cordened off with a bit of string across, like they do at Duxford. No access but you can still see and photograph what is inside.

There were a few camera flashes going off Darren but it doesn’t seem to have been a problem. At least not for me.

There was somebody standing next to me, as we were doing the DC-6, using an in-built camera flash and couldn’t figure out why his pictures were coming out a bit dark. 😀

Thanks for the above, Brian, excellent as always. I’d booked my tickets and was looking forward to the event, but had to cancel when my wife fell ill.

Any gen on shutter speeds /ISO ratings used ?

I’m a great believer in letting the camera do all the work rather than faffing about with apertures and shutter speeds. I turned the programme dial to ‘Night’, turned off the flash and set the ISO to 100 which meant some very long shutter speeds. The Dak with props turning ended up as 8 seconds and the Venom was 3.2 seconds. A sturdy tripod and a remote shutter release are essential.

The Vulcan is supposedly going to Duxford when the flying finishes.

Duxford already has a Vulcan, why would they want another one and where would they put it? apart from outside.

    Great stuff, Brian.

I have to ask – what’s the story behind the dog and what appears to be a parachute pack on its back?

The board under the dog reads…….

    PARADOGS

Originally dogs were trained to serve with the Airborne Forces during the Second World War. These ‘paradogs’ were trained to parachute alongside the troops and subsequently to undertake guard, mine-detecting and patrol duties. Their acute senses provided an ‘early-warning’ system which undoubtedly saved many lives. Dogs are still a vital asset for troops today searching out hidden bombs and booby-traps.

Bing, war dog 2720/6871 was assigned to the Scout platoon of 13 Para. His owner had loaned him to the War Office for use on active service. He first dropped into combat in Normandy on 6 June 1944. He is reported to have been frightened by the sight and sound of anti-aircraft flak and had to be ‘helped’ out of the aircraft. He landed in a tree before he could be rescued.

He served in France until September 1944 and on 24 March 1945 he dropped over the Rhine. He remained in Germany until the war ended.

Bing was returned to his owner and on 29 March 1947, was presented with the Dickin medal, also known as the animal Victoria Cross.

there are a big set of steps up to the Battle cockpit to look in to it. I assumed it was the Battle that M.A.P.S. have been working on – it didn’t return to Hendon and came to Cosford??

    Roger Smith.

The Battle was returned to Hendon in October.

    Cheers Darren

With the way the weather was, I fully expected it to have been canceled by the time I arrived.

I was trying out my new….ish (second hand off flea bay) Sony 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G SSM lens and I was quite impressed with the quality and sharpness of the images I was getting even under the bad lighting conditions. I should imagine that with a bit of sunshine it will be a cracking lens.

Great pictures. I don’t understand why they do a photo shoot with such a grey sky.

The photo shoot would have been organised a long time ago to get pilots, ground crew, photographer and camera ship all in the same place at the same time. The weather could not be organised and hence the naff conditions.
