For any one going to Duxford on Sunday –

    Spring Car Show 2016

    Sun 1 May 2016

Applications for display cars at the Spring Car Show, 1 May 2016 are now closed and we have reached our maximum capacity. We will still be welcoming visitors as usual on the day.

Hundreds of contemporary and classic cars come to IWM Duxford on Spring Bank Holiday Sunday for our Spring Car Show. They create a spectacular display across the museum.

Contemporary cars on show usually include representatives of the BMW Car Club, the Classic Corvette Club, the TVR Car Club, the Mercedes Benz Club, the Lotus Forum and the Rolls-Royce Owners Club.

These beautifully cared-for cars are a must see for automotive enthusiasts of all ages. Car owners travel from across the UK to attend the Spring Car Show and will be delighted to chat about their four-wheeled pride and joy.

Pre-booked participants displaying cars can begin to enter the site from 9.30am, with the museum opening at the usual time of 10am. Your car club will not be permitted entrance unless you have pre-booked.

Individual cars displaying on the day without bookings will be parked in a separate section of the show area.

    From IWM Web Site.

The Fighter Collection Hawk 75 went flying first thing with a test flight and a bit of aerobatics thrown in and later in the afternoon departed for a long weekend in France with the TFC yellow Carbon Cub which left late morning. The Mk.V Spitfire was undergoing an engine test. There was a swap around of Mk.1 Spitfires with P9374/J being moved from 3 hangar up to 4 hangar to replace N3200/QV which went down to ARCo. The Boultbee Academy Chipmunk/WG348 flew in and the Boultbee Spitfire T9/SM520 fired up and got as far as the Alpha hold and developed a bit of a problem during engine checks and returned to ARCo. Late morning and a Royal Navy Wildcat/ZZ516 arrived and flew several circuits before landing for fuel for helicopter and crew.

    23Apr16

    Saturday – 23Apr16

Just as well I dug out my thermals, with a northerly wind blowing winter appears to be back. Showers were forecast throughout the day but seemed to pass either side of Duxford although we did have a heavy hail stone shower late morning. The Fighter Collection Hawk 75 was sitting out on the airfield first thing but it was the TFC Carbon Cub that went flying in the afternoon. ‘Sharkie’ went off to display at Halfpenny Green and the Catalina went flying for a bit of crew training. Work is due to start on dismantling the Victor in AirSpace next week so got possibly a last shot of it in one piece. The Spitfire shot was an experiment using the in-camera Panorama function as a faux fish eye/wide angle lens.

The bits between the escalators have notices/obstructions on them to stop that sort of thing. Obviously doesn’t deter the determined though.

Well being in the RAF I’m sure my dad would know the difference between RAF Lyneham and London Airport and the difference between an RAF and a civilian operated Britannia.

A bit of Googling and Eagle received their first Britannia 1960 for the London-Nassau route and by 1962 they had two Britannia’s on their books and Eight by 1964.

We left London airport New Year’s Eve 1959 so can’t have been with Eagle Airways. My dad was RAF so can’t imagine flying on an Army trooping transport :D.

London airport was renamed Heathrow in 1966. According to my dad, we flew RAF there and back from London airport.

Flew to Singapore in 1959 returned to the UK late 1962 in time for that nice winter of 1963 :D. Don’t remember much about the flight out as I was about 5 years old but coming back, can’t remember departure location but we were in an RAF Britannia and stopped off at Bombay and Ankara and after 24 hours touched down at London Airport after circling for a while as they hand cranked down the nose wheel.

Was on BBC Breakfast this morning.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-35995178

I did mention when they were installing it, that it was on the wrong side of the LWH because if they put it on the other side then they could sell extra tickets to photographers air show viewing platform. 😀
