What am I?

I’m a meteor night fighter of course! Big nose and pot belly, (getting) old and slow – and on night shift! :diablo: 😮

It may well have had L8032 plastered all over it, but this is incorrect for a 72 Sqn Gladiator. K8032, however, was used by 72 Sqn hence the 72 Sqn colour scheme and initially correct K8032 for the scheme. The change to L8032 on discovery of its true serial should have brought about a change of squadron colours, to be strictly accurate. I suppose the cost of changing it may have been prohibitive at the time. I would be interested to know which units L8032 served with? It did not with 72.

    72 Sqn?

According to Harry Holmes book she started with 72sqdn May 46 then to 214sqdn Dec 46 and was scrapped Oct 48.

72 Sqn flew Spitfires throughout WW2 and were never a Lanc squadron – do you mean 7 Sqn?

    Scale

Can you give us an idea of the scale of each plane and how one can obtain copies?

    Airfix & EBay

I am not saying that all Airfix kits are of such poor quality and age. I have purchased and built may hundreds in the last 45 years and there are some very good Airfix kits out there. However, when you compare a £4.99 Airfix Mig 15 to a £4.99 high quality and detailed Academy/Revell/?Italeri kit there is no comparison. I believe the comment that the poor Airfix kit purchased by the beginner, who is most likely very disappointed, has hit the nail on the head – he won’t buy another Airfix kit. Airfix needed to have a major strategy rethink, be innovative and evolve into a market leader with newer and better quality kits and ditch the 50 year old moulds to survive. Sadly their marketing team and management still seem to have the head in the 60’s. Such a shame. 🙁
Andy, I’m sure the 50,000+ Americans killed in the war appreciate your summary of their sacrifice.

[B]DON’T YOU KNOW IT IS RUDE TO SHOUT ON THE INTERNET!B] polite people use small case, even if they have an angry point to make. I think a week ban from the RFC Officers Mess and 25 orderly officer duties should sort you out young fellahmelad! :diablo:

I don’t believe Corgi are to blame, you only have to look at some of the abysmally poor kits Airfix are still producing – Mig 15 (nearly 50 years old moulding) Me 110 (likewise) – and expecting them to compete with the terrific quality of such companies as Tamiya, Hasegawa and Trumpeter.

    Airfix & EBay

Get ’em while you can guys. Just watch the price of a supposedly ‘rare’ Airfix kit skyrocket on EBay if Airfix do go under, in a similar way to all of the supposedly ‘rare’ Frog kits when they went bust. Looking at EBay now, there are so many ‘rare’ Frog kits coming out of the closet/attic as those who bought them and stored them away all those years ago are discovering that the collectors market value for them is taking a nosedive due to the multitude of new kit manufacturers briniging out highly detailed versions, such as the new Wyvern and Gannet from Trumpeter, of the kits that only Frog made in the past. in fact there are so many Frog kits on EBay now that one could almost believe the company was still producung kits! :dev2:

Back in 1990 in a country which had a terrorist problem (can’t say where – security, dontcha know) I met the squadron boss coming upstairs as I was going down. Over one shoulder he was carrying a wooden Sidewinder missile and over the other a wooden .5 machine gun. I asked him what he was using them for. His response was that he was strapping them to his helicopter and since he could not shoot the terrorists he planned to scare them to death with his heavily armed heli.!

I got mine at the airport bookshop at Ronaldsway several years ago. Can’t vouch for them having it now though. I might be able to copy a relevant passage if that would help. PM me if you think I can help
