Nice to see a couple of chaps from my neck of the woods, us Sou’westers are in short supply here, welcome to the forum chaps, I fly out of Filton and I did hear on the grapevine, or it could have been the Bristol Evening Post that they are to chop part of the runway off at the far end of rwy 27, anyone got any news on this? apparently it is to make way for development?
Having attended a Professional Pilot Seminar last November, John Monks who is head of recruitment for BA told us this at this point and he said the reasons were the government was bring in new legislation regarding age discrimination, I think they retire their captains at 55, so effectively if a captain wanted to stay on until he was 60 and was not allowed to due to BA’s policy this I guess would constitute discrimination hence the change of policy.
fantastic pictures
Again as Pte1643 says it is a long trip, I have flown it 3 times, times varied outbound between 11½hrs to 13hrs, it is about 13hrs – 14hrs on the way back, depends on what service you book will depend on whether alot of the journey is in the dark or not, if you get the late services from Heathrow then it will get light after a few hrs into your trip which will give you something to look at outside if you cannot sleep on planes like me, most amazing thing I saw was when flying over the Afghanistan region, it was the best example of nothingness I have ever seen, and it goes on for miles & miles & miles, but you will enjoy it, get a window seat if possible, if you are going with 2 of you then book the seats at the back of the plane where the plane starts to narrow for the rear pressure balkhead, the seats are 3 wide by the window but get the ones where it immediately changes to 2, don’t know the seat numbers offhand without checking, but you will get some space by the window for luggage and enough to swing a leg into for a different posture.

I flew Qantas a few times to Australia as well as British Airways, both were fantastic, remember when people give you reports it is only their opinion like this is mine, and they may expect different things to you so hence they didn;t like it, BA & Qantas are much the same, except with Qantas there isn’t so much eye candy (being the stewardessess 😀 alot are male with Qantas)
That flight code as you stated is a BA code share and the flight is operated with Qantas, it appears like BA does not fly directly to melbourne, I just checked the BA website on a few dates and could not get a BA flight up.
In my humble experience I would go with Qantas, I have always found them to be superb

To be honest, as someone who will be looking for a first officer position in about 10 months time it would have to be absolutely anything and for anyone, beggers can’t be choosers. But given the choice I would choose the 777, why? I just love the plane, simple as that, and I also had an hour in a BA 777 simulator at Cranebank Heathrow, another one would be the Dash8 Q400, again I can’t comment on why other than the fact that I like the plane because I have not had the experience in it to give intricate details 🙂
any takers to club met24 to death? 🙂
Sorry Wozza F1 is boring these days, Much better when the races were won on the track and not in the pitlane. I lost interest after senna died at Imola in 94, Probably the best race i watched was the one at donington in 93 when senna put in that awesome first lap in the wet.

Absolutely SPOT ON, and my sentiments exactly, the worse thing that ever happened to F1 was the death of Ayrton Senna, Mr MS would not be 7 times world champion now if this terrible tragedy did not happen, let’s not forget poor Roland Ratzenburger as well. Since then it has taken a nose dive for the worse, nobody could touch Senna in the wet or at Monty Carlo, not even today, I was into it big time, but now? it’s merely a procession, not my idea of entertainment.

I went to a Professional Pilot seminar a couple of months ago and Ian Cheese was there who is head of recruitment for the Dash fleet for FlyBe and he basically said ALL 146s will be replaced by the Embraer 195 to leave an all Dash Q400 & Emb 195 fleet
Hope this helps

Thanks for the help Steve, if anyone has anything else to add that would be gratefully appreciated
