I find LASORS as lucid as muddy water, can anyone else locate this in LASORS?
Dean
The MER is a seperate entity, then comes the MEIR if you choose to do so, to be honest a SEIR wont go down well on a potential CV, do the MER first, then choose whether you want to do the SEIR or MEIR 🙂 Id choose the MEIR any day 🙂
Dean.
Shocking Dave
Have you got a link to the AAIB report?
Dean
BA CityExpress, BMI or Eastern by any chance? 😉
Good luck with it anyway Darren whatever you decide, I sincerely hope you realise your dream someday 🙂
D.
Darren
Are you a pilot mate? if so can you tell me who you fly for?
Thanks
Dean
Personally Tony I would do the CPL the way Im doing it
PPL
ATPL exams
IMC
Night
Hr building (cos you need 150hrs to start the CPL)
CPL
MER
IR
MCC
Once Ive done all that I will assess whether or not there is a need for me to undertake a TR, but basically if you are going down the SS route then above is about what you need to do.
Hope this helps
Shout up if you need any more info
Dean
Hi Tony
Basically theres 3 roads you can take
1st one is Self sponsored, you will then be known as a SSP (self sponsored pilot)
2nd is part sponsorship where you will pay for a portion of your training and probably be bonded to an airline
3rd one is full sponsorship, which is VERY rare today
this is a list of what you need to be able to fly commercially:
PPL (Private Pilot’s Licence)
NR (Night Rating)
ATPL Ground exams (Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence) 14 subjects, a commercial licence without this is basically worthless
MER (Multi Engine Rating) not much use not having this as you will have to fly a twin at some point
IR (Instrument Rating) Speaks for itself, you need this to enable you to fly commercially, just remember the IR has nothing to do with what the weather is like outside, it can be night or day, rain or shine, if you fly IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) the weather can be anything, its the flight rules you follow
CPL (Commercial Pilot’s Licence) it’s with this that you can earn money when flying, without it you cannot sit on any revenue earning flight.
fATPL (Frozen ATPL) basically once you have gained your CPL/IR and have passed the ATPL exams you then hold a fATPL, it becomes unfrozen once you have reached 1500 hrs flight time, and I dont think you can be a commander of an aircraft on a revenue earning flight with a fATPL, it has to be unfrozen, and your ATPL exams are valid for 7 years? if you have not unfrozen your licence in this time you will have to resit all the exams.
MCC (Multi Crew Co operation) this rating speaks for itself, you need it to fly multi crew aircraft, airlines generally require you to have this before you are hired
JOT (Jet Orientation Training) Again, this converts you from piston/turbo props to Jets, this also is generally required by airlines before they will look at you but alot of the time this comes within your Type Rating Course
TR (Type Rating) any turbo prop or jet aircraft require you to have a TR before you can act as part of the crew, this is becoming more and more needed on your CV before airlines will even look at you
Thats all I can think of for now Tony, shout up if Ive missed anything
Dean
p.s. ATPL (h) is your ATPL exams for helicopters, obviously ATPL (a) is fixed wing aircraft
No worries Steve
I actually had 85hrs at the time of application and still got through, I think they had to cap it somehow but there was a bit of give & take etc.
Yes mate there is hope, have you read this month’s Flyer magazine? a very interesting article in there about BA and their recruitment drive etc, well worth the read and its also very encouraging
Dean
And I had just finished polishing it only a day before I took it up, now look at the state of it!
Those Zebras are quite large beasts R, maybe you need thicker glasses if you didnt see it on the rwy? 😉
ew the blood, as DME said I hope the crew are/were ok etc
D.
Deano, how’d you swing that one then? Like you I have bags of equity in my house so financially it’s a go-er, but obviously I’m keen to look at ways of scagging extra funding elsewhere if possible. Aren’t we all!
I’m on 118 hrs TT, and currently umming and ahhing about the fATPL / CPL issue. Long term goal is to instruct, but in order to do that I need at least a CPL under current rules, but I’m currently undecided on whether to ‘limit’ myself to a CPL, or bite the bullet and do fATPL because of the potential extra opportunities that might bring.
Also, general question to you ATPL / CPL studes, what age brackets are you in? Am I too long in the tooth at 35? (This is likely to have a rather major influence on my decision!).
Steve
Have a read here mate
basically PPRuNe were going to narrow it to 10 people, interview and aptitude test the 10 and then select the 5 from that, Ive already received an email stating I’ve made the top 5 😀 ( no i havent slipped IFR £100 in his Christmas card 😉 ) so all I have to do is pass the aptitude test and impress them at the interview which should take place in the new year so Im told.
This is a great fund and full credit to PPRuNe & BGS for giving people like me the opportunity to go for it.
As far as your age goes Steve I’d say go for it, Im 32 in April ’05 and Im going for it full on, I dont want to get to 40 and look back and say “if only Id tried”, this way Im going to give it 1 shot and give it 200% and see what happens, even if I can’t cut it at least I can say Ive tried, and as far as age goes Steve, perhaps you would like to peruse this post
If the good times return (which there is little evidence peeking through at the moment ) then us oldies have every chance of gaining employment, if the pilot shortage everyone is talking about materializes then even R has a chance
(only jesting Robert, keep your wig on 😉 )
Let me know how you go etc
Dean
Dean,
Sounds good! I should be starting to study mid to late January.
Going over to Florida in pairs sounds a good idea, I imagine it would be boring flying for 50 hrs on your lonesome. I guess we might even learn more if I sit in a few of your flights and vice versa.
I’ll let you know when I start.
Cheers
John
Cool John, absolutely right
Jan. is when I should be starting mine, I’ll keep you informed
Dean
Martin
Good luck mate, Hope all goes well, dont forget my MSN etc if you need a chat etc, support goes a long way when doing the fATPL and it reciprocates
DME
Give me a shout when your going to start your ATPL study mate, could be about the same time as me, also if the timing is right I will be looking to go to Florida too to hr build, maybe we could jet over together etc, see how it goes
Dean
