Go for it mate, I am sure you’ll have the best time of your life. Male cabin crew are perceived as being gay yes, and I am friends with a gay cabin crew member with Virgin Atlantic, but in today’s accepting society you should be able to do the job and not have to worry about the comments.
Once you have been doing the job for a year you’ll grow a thick skin and brush off the comments. Your only concern will be how many times in a week you would have said “heard it all before”
Good luck and keep us all informed.

Yes mate, I’d also accept BHX as well however it is a 1½hr drive to there from me, Exeter is only 1hr 10, it’ll probably be a Glasgow base lol.
Guys thanks again, I do appreciate the comments, Paul, it felt like it was yesterday too, where has the time gone?
jasop, considering you dispatch the flybe Q400s from Birmingham can you tell me how many they have based there? I did hear it was only 2, if this is the case then my chances of getting Birmingham are quite slim. Time will tell 🙂

Welcome Steve, enjoy the madhouse 🙂
Mate check out the picture, the LLZ is located in the HSI below the PFD, I have boxed it in red.
Just ensure you have the correct “course” selected by using the OBS.
Hope this helps

Well done mate, glad you have a job you are going to enjoy, and I am sure you will do really well at it as well. Congrats, don’t forget the piccies 😉
Happy belated birthday mate.
Hope you had a great day.
My 2 daughters birthday was this weekend, one on the 14th, the other the 15th, and it’s my ma’s tomorrow.
Adam was yours the 13th or 14th?

Thanks for the info on the IOM, it looks very nice over there, it was your link to the pics that helped us make the decision to go, but then they threw Exeter into the equation and this changed everything.
Thanks again
Dean
Andrew, not sure about the tax breaks, it’s irrelevant now, I’m not going to the IOM, if I wait 6 weeks they could offer me Exeter, so this is what I have done, either way I will know where I will be based by the end of August (6 weeks), it could be Belfast or Glasgow, who knows, but fingers are crossed for Exeter.
Thanks again guys for all your nice comments, a great feeling of community spirit here, that’s what I like about this foru.
jasop, I was a shift manager at a large print company before this, I was made redundant at the end of Nov last year so this gave me the opportunity to press on with the training.
I’ll keep you all posted on any updates I get.
Rgds

No worries mate ( I hope it is correct ) and thanks alot 🙂
Fab shots Paul, I love the LOT Emb170, I don’t know what it is about LOT but I do like their livery, it is one of those liveries that you would think people would hate. A 737 looks great in the LOT Livery.
I “think” it was March 25th, this was the official takeover date. I can’t imagine they would still use the British callsign after this date because there was plenty of time to get things sorted.
Thanks again guys
Judas, relief, excitement, and also very surreal, I still don’t believe it, it is almost like it is not happening therefore I am only mildly excited. I was reflecting on my own tonight thinking “am I really going to be flying airliners in a few months?” “what? me? that can’t be right”, it is very bizarre, and very daunting.
Turbulence is great fun, the bumpier the better, but I guess it’s all down to the individual’s tollerance levels
Chaps
Many many thanks for all your best wishes etc, I do appreciate it.
A few questions to answer, I’ll try and do my best.
Andrew, flybe were recruiting for their Belfast or IOM bases, originally I thought I was going to be going to Belfast as a friend of mine has just started his conversion course and has been told he is based there, so it was a surprise to get the IOM.
1L, yes mate plenty of Vodka, or plenty of Australian white that’s for sure 😉
James, not sure about the jump seat but I am sure the skipper won’t mind the odd cockpit visit or 2 on the ground
Sam, my route, I’ll give a brief overview of everything I have done & the timescales etc
2001 – 2003 PPL at Bristol Flying Centre
2003 – 2005 Hour Building – Bristol Flying Centre & Aeros Filton
Feb 2005 ATPL groundschool Scholarship from PPRuNe
Feb 2005 GAPAN Aptitude test – RAF Cranwell, result – High chance of success.
July – Nov 2005 Mod 1 ATPL groundschool with Bristol Groundschool
Dec – Jan 2005/2006 Night Qual, Aeros Flight Training Filton
Jan – May 2006 Mod 2 ATPL groundschool with Bristol Groundschool
July – Oct 2006 Hour building – Aeros Flight Training Staverton
Oct – Nov 2006 Commercial Pilot’s Licence – Aeros Flight Training Staverton
Jan – March 2007 Instrument Rating – Aeros Flight Training Staverton
April 2007 MCC – Flight Safety in Farnborough – Saab 340
May 2007 Flight Instructor’s Course – Aeros Staverton
June 2007 Landed a Flight Instructor’s job with Aeros (right place, right time)
June 2007 flybe interview
July 2007 flybe sim assessment – Flight Safety Farnborough – Saab 340
Today – Told I was successful and that they want me based at the IOM
Total cost to myself £55,500
£2,600 of CPL paid for by my company as part of a closure agreement
£1,900 (all of ATPL groundschool) paid for by PPRuNe, which I have to pay back.
So I went modular, I paid for everything myself (well most of it), no CTC or Oxford etc etc
Tartan, I’ll see what I can do mate 😉
wannabe pilot
Basically yes, we have to pack up and move to the IOM, however, flybe have given me another option, I can go into a hold pool (I’ll be the only one there, they have just emptied it) I can wait until the current bidding system is done (in the next 4 weeks or so) and then see if there is another base available on the mainland, so catch 22 really, if I accept the IOM base I can start my type rating in 2 weeks, if I go into the hold pool I will have to start it in September, but there are no guarantees of any base, it’s what’s available after all the bids have been dealt with etc, so it could be Belfast, or still the IOM, or I may get lucky and it’s Exeter or Birmingham. The wife and I are still pondering the options, most of me wants to start it now, but is that fair to the wife etc? she is willing to relocate no problems, but there are a lack of flights from the IOM to near where I live at the right price, which is irrelevant really, I just want to start 🙂
Flybe were more than happy to accept me with no airline hrs, with sim time I have about 320hrs in total, so not alot, I did offer them 4 years managerial experience, so maybe that counted for me, who knows.
Flybe was my first interview, I was a bit lax, because I knew I had the interview I held off sending out the CVs until recently, have had a few replies but no other interview to date, I have only sent out 5 CVs in total.
6 routes from the IOM, yes I think it could become a tad tedious after a few years, but the good thing is that they add new routes all the time, and every 6 months they have a bidding system for bases, so I can bid for a different base and hope I get it, I am a 1 company man, so I intend to stay at flybe for as long as I am happy, I guess the next port of call is the Emb195
I’ll send you a PM tomorrow, it’s 1am now 😮
EGNM, glad you have something positive to say about the IOM, all I have heard all day is bad reports lol.
Thanks shamrock, appreciated
