The shower scenes or maybe the oiled up men player volleyball…

Nahhh dude, don’t be nasty… (still I think it was quentin tarantino who said something like this about top gun “it’s about men struggling with their inner unknown homosexuality” :D)

I just feel that Top Gun was a better movie, some scenes at L d Ciel seemed too disconected from each other and such.

Oh, and can’t forget those *classy* 80s songs 😀

PS: One point in favour of the french one are the girls, it is way better in that section 😉

    Saw it recently too.

Nice movie, but still *something* was lacking to make it a classic like Top Gun 😎

    Who have studied Super Mystere?
If you did, could you tell me how many pylon on a Super Mystere with photo proving please?

Airvectors has a small article on it, might be a good place to start:

    http://www.vectorsite.net/avmyst.html#m4

Armament consisted of twin DEFA 30 millimeter cannon. Early versions also had a rocket pack for 35 Matra 68 millimeter unguided rockets, but the rocket pack was quickly abandoned. The aircraft had two stores pylons, and could carry an external load of 900 kilograms (2,000 pounds), including drop tanks, bombs, unguided rocket pods, AS-30 radio-guided air-to-surface missiles, or Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.

It’s funny to see that the Kirov class ships do not see explicitly using or achieving stealth. Their structure isn’t the one we’re used to for stealth ship.

The same is also true for the Royal Navy frigates T23, while not sporting those features we normally associate with stealth, it is said that they include some very substancial RCS reduction measures and such.

In the UK as said above they have also kind of admitted that the Merlin is too large, too capable and far too expensive for the SAR role, so you can be sure whoever takes over the SAR role here won’t be using Merlins. However, I suspect that the RAF will keep some merlins configured for this for their own uses or if a longer range rescue is required.

Well, it really depends on the specifications needed. In Portugal’s case, the Merlin was really the best choice for our SAR needs, due to it’s long range (the requirements were to close the Lisbon-Azores gap, something the Pumas could never do). There wasn’t really much discussion about any chopper more suited to it than the EH101 ( it’s competitors were a S-70 version and a Cougar one).

BTW, Agusta-Westland has finished delivering the 12 EH101s ordered by FAP.

Portuguese Air Force Receives 12th and Final EH101

AgustaWestland is pleased to announce that the 12th and final EH101 Merlin helicopter for the Portuguese Air Force was delivered to Portugal this week, flying from Vergiate in Italy to Montijo, near Lisbon in Portugal. The aircraft, a Combat SAR variant, will now join the other 11 aircraft which are operated by 751 Squadron at Montijo Air Base and at Porto Santo (Madeira island) detachment. This event marks the conclusion of a successful delivery programme with all the aircraft delivered in 18 months.

In February 2006 the SAR EH101 Merlins became fully operational, replacing Puma helicopters in the SAR role. With the largest SAR area of responsibility of any European country the long range capabilities of the EH101 provides new levels of SAR capability covering a large area of the Atlantic ocean operating from bases on the mainland, Lajes in the Azores and Madeira. The 12 aircraft have now flown over 2,000 hours and have demonstrated there long range capabilities, while self deploying to the Azores. Based on a common airframe and powered by RTM322 engines, all three variants are equipped with a range of equipment including search and rescue hoist, belly mounted 360 degree Galileo Avionica, searchlight and FLIR system, multi-mission direction finding system, fully integrated communications and navigation system and a range of cabin role equipment. The SAR variant can rescue over 30 survivors and is capable of performing rescues at 450 nm (833 km) from its base and returning when fitted with long range fuel tanks. The SIFICAP (Sistema de Fiscalizaçao e Controlo das Actividades da Pesca) or fishery protection variant is equipped with a cabin mission console for the operation of the 360 degree scan radar and other sensors. Other equipment includes an external loudspeaker, a searchlight for night operations and bubble windows. The final four aircraft are configured for Combat SAR operations and feature additional equipment for this demanding role including electronic protective measures, air-to-air refueling system, personnel locator system interrogator and a fully automatic folding system for the main rotor blades and the tail unit.

The Portuguese Government selected the EH101 in 2001 and placed a contract for 12 aircraft comprising six for Search and Rescue, two for Fishery Protection (SIFICAP – Sistema de Fiscalizaçao e Controlo das Actividades da Pesca) and four for Combat SAR. The first EH101 Merlin was delivered in December 2004.The selection of the EH101 for the Portuguese Air Force came at the end of a thorough and extensive evaluation and as a result of flight evaluation of the EH101 against the Sikorsky S-92 and the Eurocopter Cougar Mk2+. The comprehensive range of tests carried out by the Portuguese Evaluation Committee demonstrated the unrivalled capability of the EH101, and its ability to carry out the most demanding of SAR requirements. This achievement underlines the superior ability of the EH101 to satisfy the extremely demanding requirements of Combat SAR missions as well as its already well-proven performance in the maritime, transport/Utility and SAR role. Orders for 146 EH101 have been placed to date by customers around the world including the Portuguese Air Force, the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, Italian Navy, Canadian Forces, Tokyo Metropolitan Police, Royal Danish Air Force and Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force.

well afaik it was supposed to be a fighter, something which the F-117 is clearly not 😀

in the 2nd link that swerve posted there’s

The work led to the eventual development of a three-quarter scale piloted windtunnel model of a multi-faceted Stealth fighter. Former project leader Dr Gerhard Löbert claims that the design “very probably” had better radar characteristics than the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk, despite the F-117 having more than twice the number of radar-scattering facets.

that doesn’t mean a lot of course

How much does a Phalanx mount weigth ? IIRC the ABs have been putting continuously new equipment onboard, and their weight growth margins might have been reached, so the Phalanx was taken out in order to make room for more needed (arguably) equipment.

OTOH, a Phalanx mount doesn’t seem that heavy…

Congrats to the French team, they were better and clearly deserved the win 🙂 ( but that won’t stop me from supporting the squadra azurra now 😎 )

About Ronaldo, afterall he’s a football player, he’s got his head on his feet, what you’d expect ? And he is pretty thick, even for a football player…

And yeah, his and Postiga’s dives were very clear 😡 … Not that I’d call our players “cheaters” but I have to agree that there’s some kind of culture in Portuguese football ( and not only…) where it’s a *good thing* to try and cheat on the referee. Heck, young players are even taught that …
