No, CD, you are missing the point of democracy. You don’t DO anything in opposition, you can’t, you are in opposition, and by definition have the minority view.

However, you do SAY things. The system works best when you don’t just parrot what the chaps who won last time are saying, like a kid trying to be popular in the playground.

Instead, as the leader of an effective opposition in a healthy democracy you say with honesty what you would like to do when in power, if you ever should be, and then if you do find yourself winning arguments and with sufficient votes gained on that basis to then BE in power, you do it.

And yes, in our system it may still be the minority view on any one given policy – but that’s the system we have – as defenders of the current government will tell you.

Good luck to him. He has the entire British press, except maybe the Guardian, to deal with, and when they get down to making stuff up and reporting it as news – as they have already – you have to be VERY good at getting your side across in soundbite form. I recommend he does some media training, makes no secret of it, and explains why.

Having just suffered one of the worst election defeats in the partys history, which can be squarely aimed at issues like immigration, EU membership, benefits, the economy etc, they are now commuting political suicide by once again trying to tell the electorate that they are wrong, and Labour is right. This, after having to listen to weeks of ‘lessons have been learned’. How can they be so far out of touch?

To be fair, he was telling the TUC, not the electorate.

His preparedness to say what he believes as the opposition leader, rather than what his team tell him the public currently want to hear, is what marks him down as – frankly – a better leader of the opposition than we have had for decades. Whether or not one agrees with his views. It is precisely because it is the minority view that it is a good thing it is being stated – and if you believe the tweets under the report – stated clearly and unambiguously. I have trouble with the ‘wish he’d stop saying that stuff’ brigade.. makes me wonder what they are indeed scared of.
