Oh dear – I missed something – is it no longer airworthy?
I wonder – say 30 of us got together, what would be the cost of a Carribean trip in the Sunderland?
Mr Weeks, if you are reading this, there’s a business idea 🙂
I was just going to suggest that you went and self-inserted.
The only airframe that springs to mind was a Westland Whirlwind in a pub play area in Rettendon, Essex. The closed a few years ago, the chopper may have left even before then, but I haven’t a clue what happened to it.
Damn. Just for a moment there….
My contribution – Vampire as a climbing frame in the grounds of Standish Children’s Hospital, Gloucestershire, Mid-eighties. Mentioned it before on here, but can’t find it now.
Hi Blackjet
I emailed you too! Still after any 3D40’s – if anyone else out there has any we’d be interested too.
Matt
Blackjet, you have a pm.
Just agreein’, Jeepman.
Should it be excavated, a decision would have to be made, taking in as many interested parties’ views as possible, as to whether to keep it conserved as an artefact (being more-or-less unique) and used for reference or ‘destroyed’ as an historic object to help lend authenticity to a new build.. Not starting that argument again, not actually leaning in either direction at this stage, and not my decision anyway – and it is still a big hypothetical.
But yeah, it would be of inestimable value to us – just not of much interest to the world outside (compared to squadrons of crated Spits).
Trumper, you have a PM – Eagle?
Trumper, you have a PM – Eagle?
I keep meaning to do some local research into this – I have only heard rumours and anecdotes so far, though they all seem to point in the same direction (large holding of aircraft components, not cleared down but buried when the yard closed). Does anyone on here know more?
Welcome to the forum. I am intrigued by your forum name – see my signature below..
To qualify – the Yeovil Whirlwind has been hacked on a fire dump, de-winged, rolled around by earth moving equipment then left to rot underground for several decades. What remains is of academic interest, but it won’t be flying to Perranporth any time soon. Just thought I’d say that before people start sending money.. actually, no, forget I said that.
The Cambridge Halfords Stirlings – are they related to the large scrapyard full of plane bits that was levelled in the seventies to make way for the out-of-town retail park in which Halfords now sits? If we could move Halfords, DFS, Homebase and all the other usual suspects there should be quite a lot down there..
Whirlwind G-AGOI is certainly there – too many independent witnesses with the same first-hand version of the story for any doubt. Location is roughly known, but chances of AgustaWestland allowing excavation on live factory airfield are slight to none.
Andy, fancy a pint in the Eagle when in town?

Not high speed, no.
Tufts don’t necessarily relate to flight trials. The RAE had a large wind tunnel capable of mounting a full-sized airframe, as per reports on Hurricane and Whirlwind. No need for a Hampden to observe anything!
