Ken Clarke always struck me as being the best PM we never had. And I speak as one who would never have voted for him 🙂

Clarke’s arch commentary on the BBC election special was a tonic and a reminder of how far the standard we expect of our politicians has fallen over thirty years or so.

Ryan, do you not see that any agreement involving both Sinn Fein and the DUP is at worst a neutral thing and potentially a positive thing, while an agreement with just one of them can only have a negative impact on peace in Northern Ireland.

However, as Sinn Fein do not take up their seats it is pointless to consider Corbyn forming an alliance anyway. Another red herring. When did he say he would / could?

You can see how it can feel like a personal victory to JC. Despite the papers and a nasty online campaign telling everyone that everyone else dislikes him, he still radically raises the Labour vote.

No amount of bleating changes that. Everyone knows the Labour party lost. I also believe that the country lost, not because of who became the largest party but because we now have a hung parliament. This wrecking was entirely a Conservative mistake – and we were supposed to believe these were the tactical geniusses that would get us something for nothing out of Brexit.

The mask has slipped and fallen away.

So, now what? Corbyn should wait for a decent interval, let May be removed by her own party, then walk, his job done. Labour party now cleansed of the Blairites and having re-established the narrative, let someone who has not been mercilessly slandered stand. They can function as an effective opposition to a Conservative government with an untainted leader doing their best with Europe. Then after Brexit we can all draw breath, see what’s in the bank, and vote accordingly and with clarity.

..and I think you mean York Central. If by ‘stain’ you mean one of the most culturally rich and historic university towns in Western Europe, then fair enough. Funny definition though.
