Here it is. The typed notes at the end of part III about how best to approach specific types are worth a read from an engineering perspective as well as an historical one

I hope this link works https://1drv.ms/w/s!AmagSHTAGd0OaVASBhgxApGGH1M

Formatting is messed up by the on-line version, it’s best to download it and open it locally.

    Westland whirlwind part ?
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322446019633?ul_noapp=true

Yes, this one definitely is. The seller produces one Whirlwind item at a time, several months apart. If you are someone on here, 109, can you get in touch? We do have some money as a project, but as a group it is our policy not to buy parts individually via eBay.

Oh, I know it’s in the report, Mog, I read it – I meant the discussion here. I was hoping to take it away from the ‘Inside or outside the airfield’ argument.

Do current rules really minimise risk? Would saying ‘inside a perimeter only’ help? Would saying ‘no overflight of A-Roads’ help? I would argue no, and in fact they would both make things much more dangerous. It is possible, for instance, to argue that ‘no figure that ends along the axis of a major road within a parallel distance’ is a far better rule. ‘No overflight’ of a road could actually guarantee occasional time spent over that road, travelling along it and not across, while out of shape. But people are calling for more ‘no overflight’ type rules.

I know one cannot guarantee the safety of anybody – but minimising risk of the activity has to be just that, even if it means splitting hairs.

This is the kind of idea I was hoping to discuss, in the light of everything the report had to say.

OK, wading into murky water without much of a clue here, but..

Isn’t the important thing to look at where a manoeuvre might end up if it goes awry, not where in the sky most of it happens relative to an arbitrary point vertically below?

The impact is rarely, if ever, directly below the point where things go wrong anyway.

Whether the bent loop began (or the majority of the loop happened) within the airfield boundary or not isn’t frankly that important – it was the last part of it that proved fatal. Shouldn’t this focus attention of how to orient a loop so as to minimise risk inside and outside the boundary, rather than simply where to do it?

I don’t agree with jag that this conman is somehow the fault of the left. Please don’t delete me again for saying this, mods. Or if you do, please delete the equally irrelevant right-wing ‘position statement’ that I was responding to as well.

You could try photographing them – do it outdoors for best results. Maybe rig up a frame or something – maybe just weights – to hold each page down? A decent digital camera would be best, but a mobile would do it. Certainly less damaging to a marriage at – what – 5 seconds a page?

Were these items really fitted to Spitfires

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282355218889
I’ve got 3 of them of which 2 are marked 110BB/879 then NAF68986-1. They look to be exactly the same. What makes me question them is that they have the makers details marked on them as ‘Doolittle Radio Inc’ which smacks to me as an American item. Wouldn’t have thought they were fitted to Spits ??.

The type 93 was a standard aerial for the MkIII IFF system, which was standardised during WWII so that kit was common to both the UK and US. I think the 93 was speed limited to 350mph – so technically probably not correct for Spitfire, and ‘Doolittle’ does suggest US kit in this case. I have started to receive installments of the scanned document from the owner, and when complete I will put it in the cloud and post a link here. In the meantime, how’s this for a ‘taster’.. the middle page is astounding, recovering a Hurricane from Chesil Beach in the middle of an air battle..

Surprised at that, Meddle. The history of aviation deserves to be properly represented, not reduced to the pointy and shiny. And if you wish to be Darwinian, the Bristol Freighter was far more commercially sound, and produced in greater numbers, than Concorde.

The father of a friend of mine gained a thirty year career at Westlands by failing the interview but turning up on Monday and doing the job anyway. On pay day he just told them there must be some mistake and got put on the payroll.

I have nothing useful to add regarding the incident itself, but perhaps if any of the gentlemen of the press are still looking at this please stop calling aerobatics ‘stunts’ or worse ‘tricks’ as has happened repeatedly in the current wave of reporting. A debate of the kind John raises is not helped by those words.

Intrusive spread of noxious vocabulary – as so accurately “reported” (made up) by the Daily Telegraph?

What, like ‘LL’? Or ‘Alternative Fact’? Or maybe ‘Fake News’?

I said lots of people could be Farage. I can’t speak for everyone, but I can for myself when I say I would rather not be. No delusion.

I am sorry I am not impressed by the man the way you are.

    Perspective, John.

Did you also hear the Radio 4 piece on this, putting it into context?

First of all, the authors of this report have conflated left and liberal. Again.

Ever thought that maybe it’s the other way around, and that being a functioning academic and being capable of liberal thought go hand-in-hand? That maybe when talking of tackling ‘right wing attitudes’ in the classroom that Professor was talking of tackling ignorance – ‘White is Right’, Foreigners are bad, the earth was made in six days, etc.

In a similar way, saying that “always trying to make oneself richer makes everyone richer” isn’t necessarily true, and we should think about it, might make a person look left-wing to you, but it might just be tackling ignorance as well.

It’s not the politics of academia that are at odds with yours as much as the perspective. And this is why extremists on left and right put ‘academics’ on their target list fairly early on when they wish to retain newly-gained power. Believe me, Trump agrees with you, John.
