Finishing a stint of 14 consecutive 12-hr night shifts on comms watch and looking forward to 3 days off with runs planned to the local water park and to the beach with the kids!. The fact that the metoc chappies are saying we are in for a heatwave just makes the smile that little bit broader!.
Just watched the recent remake….sorry…..rewrite….of the Day the Earth Stood Still and I really wish I hadn’t.
I’m a big 50’s/60’s sci-fi nut and this, in the original version, was one of my all time favourites. When I saw it was being redone I was beside myself with anticipation…couldnt get to it on the cinema so I forced myself away from the dodgy russian-subtitled movie download sites and decided to wait for the DVD.
To see it rehashed in to such a pile of envirotwerp-agenda ridden rubbish has just made all that waiting utterly pointless. God its dire!.
Did see ‘Push’ at the flicks a little while back and I quite enjoyed that!. Very sterotypical ‘Hong Kong’ action movie style but enjoyable for it!.

Only an idiot would believe that now, of all times, the American government can afford to ignore China’s wishes.
So the USN is stopping those SURTASS ships is it PLAWolf?.
Face it China does not have the pull that you are trying to make out here. China is not a superpower yet. The UAE could easily sell those Mirages on and threaten to charge on Chinese imports to the regional economies if they make trouble over it. Any victory China would make by standing by her principles on that one, and trying to punish the UAE through loss of any transhipment tariffs (though there shouldnt really be any from a Freeport), would be far and away overshadowed by the loss of trade with the ME states and the interests they have in western Africa. Certainly, at the moment, the Chinese economy doesnt need another hit to its export goods markets!. You are the one in blinkers if you dont see that.
Then, bottom line, the question would have to be asked about all the fuss being kicked up about a few dozen last-vintage fighter jets. Would the PRC’s ‘face’ be served by visibly worrying about a transaction that is hardly going to tip the numerical balance in Taipei’s favour?. This isnt the purchase of a dozen SSK’s is it now wolf!!!.
Sounds more like Russia is catching on to the idea that has taken root with the Indonesian ‘Tiger’ corvette deal. Hulls built abroad wherever there is, presumably, cheap capacity and then brought back to be outfitted with the sensitive stuff at home.
Provided all the engine room fit out and the ancilliary systems built in during hull construction are in line with existing or planned Russian support infrastructure there would be little actually to prevent such a move and if Russian industry is backlogged, and they feel they need the hulls in the water, then its a creative solution. In fact IIRC the Danes did something similar with their last OPV buy….subbing out the hull construction to E.European yards and just fitting out themselves.
The problem and, of course, the difference between doing this with an OPV and a line escort is that the people who build your escort hull might not be people you want to have that much familiarity with your new vessels real-world performance characteristics!.
Makes a nice beer batter for fish and chips!!!
Hmmm beer battered fish and chips….good information Steve shall be passed on to Mrs Jonesy for a trial run….when I can get her to let me off the rabbit food for a night!.

It must have something going for it …it’s sold in more countries of the world than any other lager!!!
Mrs Jonesy used to run a couple of pubs before she decided on the dual sprog-dropping runs. I can tell you, from experience, what its got going for it here!.
Its cheap and its cheap….oh and people like it in shandy because the lemonade drowns the taste out!.

I’ve been trying to hold my peace on this but you know whats tragic here….Farrah Fawcett was a real icon and genuinely worthy role model for younger generations to follow. Taking real, difficult, acting roles, after she made her name, sufficient to get nominations for award after award and seldom if ever falling back on ‘just’ her considerable natural gifts.
A woman who at 50 was still possessed of enough of those gifts, through simply taking good care of herself, to not only do Playboy but sell 4 million copies of it and a woman who faced cancer twice with stoic courage, dignity and even humour. She represented so much that is positive in the human condition.
…and her passing was overshadowed by a singer, whilst legendary in his youth, who turned himself into what any objective commentry would have to describe as nigh on a living freak show. A man who’s detachment from the reality the rest of us inhabit was manifest from the choices he made and who finally lacked the responsibility or capacity to safely take medication on his own leading to a pitifully stupid end.
Yet the webservers of the world were crashed by Michael Jacksons self-destructive end and not Fawcetts tragic loss of her long fight. In my humble opinion there is something very, very wrong with the value structures of many in this world.

Ditto Merlin. The best I can think to say is that this untimely and tragic end has at least checked what could have been a further precipitous decline overshadowing absolutely the talent the man had in his younger days.
At least this way he will be mostly remembered for that talent. Perhaps also he’s now to have some rest from the demons that chased him so tirelessly through his life.
