I presume, by your comment, Eric, that you feel some bits of ancient aviation hardware are more important than the people who are likely to be killed/injured by Sandy, and/or the businesses and/or livelihoods that will be destroyed? Or have I missed something?

So, 60 (+/- ‘x’) tatty, corroded, dataplates – if it comes to pass!! From which the same number of Spitfires could (by those who live in that strange esoteric/arcane world!) be rebuilt would, I might suggest, flood the Spitfire market and reduce the value of the existing Spitfires! The value of which might well be propping up somebody’s current mortgage/business! They’ll be as cheap as chips! Another “South Sea Bubble”???

    Derekf, Quite So!
There is a considerable degree of political naivity being exhibited by many! Politicians, and Chairpersons/CEOs of major organisations, love people like this. Provided they come to you with a very sincere proposal then you will open your wallets and say “Help yourself”. Any actor will tell you that once you can fake sincerity you’ve got it made!
I did my thing with the Vulcan on Ascension – I don’t need a re-run.
At one of the very early Greenham Common Airshows we had a flying Mosquito. It was foul day. The Mossie got lost coming across LATCC territory. He called up LATCC
“ABCDE, Request check steer for Greenham”
    “Identify type”
    “Mosquito”
    “Say again type”
    “Mosquito”
    “Wait”
and at this point LATCC swept the path clear of assorted civil a/c to enable the Mossie to go to Greenham.
    I don’t need a re-run!

Do not fret chaps & chappesses.

All is not lost, though. Plans are afoot for the Vulcan to take on an intriguing new role – becoming the centrepiece of a new engineering education centre and, get this, offering fast taxi runs as a key draw! It will thus not be left to degrade, but will be maintained in “excellent running order”.

Now I just wonder who the CEO of this putative “engineering education centre” may be? – and on at least £100k, I would guess, of your and/or taxpayers money? No prizes on offer!!

And I doubt if it has the REAL reasonings behind the U-2 prang in 1977.

I doubt if the HMT Lancastria files (which are reputedly closed for 100 yrs) had anything to do with National Security or the Royal Family. The reason is, more likely, to protect the reputations of Senior Military Officers and/or Politicians. My money would go on the latter!!! But having worked on the edges of that world, my cynicism is well placed!

Lost the hearing in one ear due, primarily, to “The Sound Of Freedom” taking off from RAF Stanley.
But we stuffed it to ’em then. Couldn’t even “fart in your general direction” nowadays.

When it went and frightened the Argies (a) on the Falklands, and (b) in Argentina. That was what it was designed to do. Anything else is irrelevant!

It does not look as if you and I are talking about the same airport and/or runway alignment

    Shuck, Hi,

Willis & Holliss give a QDM of 315 (in 1944).
    GE gives 303 (True?) today.

Never saw any of ’em looking as pristine as that on any of my 7 long Dets to Stanley. Mostly covered in zaps, mud, crap, and other unmentionable fluids/semi-solids!! Make it realistic!!

And further to my last on this subject (to which, I note, there were few replies!). It says, in the ‘Notes’ section of the same book:-

19 Over Saudi Arabia, Brian Carroll, a former Lightning chief examiner, took one of the aircraft up to 87,300 feet, at which height he reported that control was ‘ on a knife edge’. The Kuwaitis also bought Lightnings, but lacked the skill to maintain them.”

Now 87,300 feet is a long way up! Is this statement likely to be true?

    TIA

    D1566, Hi,
Yes! The double double dealing involving the Israelis was, mainly, what I was alluding to in the re-supply ops as part of the complicated politics – and everybody formally denying everything all the time!!!! Italian made parachutes for the load drops!! Presumably the drop a/c was never on the Israeli Air Force inventory – even though it appears to have been flown by Israeli crews (with, of course, the obligatory Lichtenstein (or wherever) uniforms and passports!!!).
And – what is more – I would not be surprised to find that something similar is going on somewhere in the world at this very moment! Keeps ex-Hooligans in employ!!
