I have viewed gun camera footage recently of an individual with this name –
Combat Film K1416 F/O Szymankiewicz 317 20/7/42 Spitfire Ground Targets
Combat Film K2958 P/O Szymankiewicz 316 21/11/42 Spitfire Ground Targets, Holland
Voytech,
Thanks for the clarification…
Maybe I’ll get to see that!!…;)
I am still a DAS ‘member’ volunteer – though to be such I had to attend x number of days to qualify for any ‘privileges’.
Some DAS volunteers fell under the canopy of the IWM recently and therefore did not need to be a DAS member to carry out their volunteer tasks – I opted to retain my DAS membership as well (even though I have to pay a yearly sub to do so).
Ashley,
Still a bit short-sighted – people still want places to visit during the winter. And somewhere that provides a covered attraction/s even if it does involve a stroll, would no doubt be somewhere they’d go to.
Would they close Lambeth IWM for the winter season? Or the RAFM?
They’ll be renting out pitches to the Caravan Club next……
Well, what will be the point of opening empty hangars? Or maybe winter storage for your Abbey…
Closing the LWH and turning off the heating/de humidifiers to save money, could result in exhibits starting to ‘degrade’ and thereby cost more to maintain the exhibits in a presentable condition…
…pointless bean counting exercise IMVHO
Wonder how the Anglian Regiment feel about ‘their museum’ being closed to the public for x months a year…
——000-‘U’-000——-
Wot? No more freeloaders?
Richard Branson has bought it, is going to paint it white and will use it to advertise his own V(irgin) Force……..
Muahahahahaha…..
Me too – can’t remember it closing over the winter. And for the last 3 years I have been going once a week and it’s always been open…
Plenty of deckchairs and windbreaks could be fitted to the wing – maybe even enough room for deck quoits….
Never fear – there is a role for the BBMF if the bean counters do feel it is too expensive to maintain as a crowd puller…

I will admit to having viewed the “finger-in-the-pie” charts and wondered about why the admin/staff costs were so high.
Seems I am not alone in my wondering – I expect that the accountants (well paid no doubt) have all the bases covered…
Kev,
He’s running out of subjects for his ultimatums – we’ve had sale, exporting, scrapping and now redundancy. Next he’ll be threatening to take his ball home…
As part of this new Campaign, I would like to offer an incentive: those who honour a pledge of £1,000 or more will receive an invitation for a personal visit to XH558 at RAF Lyneham during the Winter Service, to see her close-up and talk to the engineers who are working on her.
What? I can go and stand up close to the Vulcan at Duxford/Hendon!!! For a £1,000 I’d expect a bit more than a “chat” with someone…
Sorry, but I’ve read enough. It’s just going to be a constant round of appeal, ultimatum, funding drive, ultimatum, action plan, ultimatum, ad infinitum.
So far we have not been successful in gaining the attention of very many of the 2.5million who saw her last summer…
Wonder why?……
I have no doubt he will have negotiated something commensurate with his position as Director…
