    RE: Nose Art

Seems like I’ve resurrected a dead parrot here!! And yes the theory is thin at one end, fat in the middle and thin at the other end….

Re: driving on the left – there are quite a few countries that still do it the proper way.
The rest are all Henry Ford’s fault – when he first built his Model T he said to his designer put the wheel on the right side, but the designer was drawing the car from the front!! The rest is history……..

    RE: Nose Art

It goes back to the days of Knights on horseback. The knight would carry his shield, bearing his coat of arms, on his left arm thus leaving his right free to dispatch his enemy. Same reason we drive on the left!
Also the aircraft captain sits on the left and the aircraft was invariably named by him, so the artwork was on the port side.

As Ann Elk said “It is my theory, and mine alone…” (apologies to non-Python fans!)

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-12-02 AT 04:36 PM (GMT)]I am volunteering for the onerous task of warming up the models – ( err, the female models I hasten to add :))- and official bacon butty taster.

Jan 5th? Hmmmmm, that may be pushing the hangover envelope to its limit but I’ve asked Santa for a can of Pledge and a yellow duster, so just show me the nearest Spit!!!!

RE: Uncle Adolf’s gift to the youth of Germany – Christmas 1944

Reminds me of that old Luftwaffe joke –
“What is pink and Luftwaffe grey and goes red at the flick of a switch?”
    A Salamander pilot bailing out……..

OK, I know its a variation on the frog in a blender joke but one does have to ask how the hell did you bail out? Switch the engine off first?

Seems as she’s in pieces now, whats the betting she just gets stuck into packing crates for the eventual journey overseas?
    Or am I being sceptical?

According to my Omnibus Edition of Military Airfields in the British Isles 39-45, Netherthorpe does not exist.

    Any other clues?

Now maybe I’m missing something but where is XH558 advertised for sale on eBay?
The small link on the TVOC webpage is for eBay, but there are only paintings, video, models etc for sale.
    Not the actual aircraft.

So has some bright spark journo looked at the TVOC site, seen the eBay link and put 2 and 2 together and got 558?

Just a bit of an update I suppose – the programme followed Bob Collis and members of the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum during their search for remains of Stirling N3756, Lancaster HK773 and a USAAF B17, all of which crashed in East Anglia.
I’ve never been to the N&SAM but having seen this programme a visit may well be on the cards.
I’m sure the programme will be repeated again soon for those of you that missed it.
