RE: Florida update
Ashley,
Glad you like the pics.
The ‘black and white’ cockpit shot is from inside the B17 they have set up as a living experience type thing. I had to shoot it using the night vision mode on the DV camera. When you watch the tape it has a background sound of the aircrew talking over the intercom during a simulated mission (apologies to William Wyler & Memphis Belle original film!)
Details of the P-51C are given on the FOF website as:-
“Paul Mantz purchased P-51C USAAF s/n 42 103831/N1204 in 1946 as war surplus and developed this aircraft into one of the hottest cross-country racers. Along with its sister ship N1202, Mantz managed to dominate the post war air racing until 1950. He subsequently placed the aircraft on display outside his facility at Orange County Airport, California.
In 1985, Kermit Weeks purchased the aircraft along with the majority of the Tallmantz collection.
In 1987, Art Teeter’s Cal Pacific Aeromotive began restoration on the rare C model Mustang, completing the restoration in March 2001. Aircraft 42 103831/N1204 is painted in the color of the Tuskegee Airman Ace, “Lee Archer”. Fantasy of Flight’s P-51C Mustang is one of only two flyable C model Mustangs in the world.”
It was really nice to see it take off whilst we were there – they do sometimes have a little air display on some days, by a single aircraft, but my luck was in when I saw the P-51 sat outside the hangar. There was a bit of a mad scramble to get outside when it started up!!!

RE: Florida update
OK, having zipped through the DV tape I took whilst at FOF, I snapped to MemoryStick the following images, which I hope you’ll appreciate. The quality is not too good as they are saved at 640×480 and do not come up to digital camera quality, but it’ll give you a little feel of the place.

RE: Florida update
Thanks Tom,
I wondered what was going on with the earthmovers etc!
There is a lot crammed into FOF, and I enjoyed the B17 experience – not every day you get to clamber through one and the effect was quite good.
Coupled with the visit to Flying Tigers/Reilly Aviation, it was a good day out. Glad I made the effort to go.
Chocks away…………

RE: Duxford, May 5th
Oooo, Tony, you’re a braver man than I!!!
I was going to mention them but thought better of it.
Actually, it’s quite good fun figuring out who actually will be flying from those ‘car park pilots’.
This reminds me of a trip to the BMF Rally at Peterborough one year. Whilst parking up I spied two guys climbing out of their car and proceeding to get changed into full motorcycle leathers!!!
They then trundled off clutching helmets.
How sad is that?
RE: Ashley’s Airshow Report
And an interesting result so far.
Windbreaks are not as bad as stepladders.
Now there is a thing that pees me right off – photographers balancing precariously on top of their steps just to get that shot of a ABC-123F taxi-ing past sans spectators heads. It creates a vicious circle – they stand on their steps, other folk then have to stand on their chairs, then even more have to stand just to see a glimpse…..who suffers? The elderly, well behaved children(!!)etc.
At least last year there was some attempt by the Flypast staff to control ‘standers’. Perhaps Airshows should follow football and become all seating events!!! (tongue firmly in cheek)
One other point – people use these windbreaks (and camping chairs tied to the barriers) to reserve their place on the crowdline. They then wander off to enjoy the other aspects of Duxford. How would you stand if you took their windbreak down, put it to one side and ‘occupied’ the empty space? I feel the good services of the local constabulary would be called upon to rectify the resulting argument!
RE: Ashley’s Airshow Report
I was not implying that you were a Wayne or Waynetta!!!
As Futurshox (?) said you always come away saying “There’s always one”.
If it’s not kids it’s some loud mouthed know-it-all who is trying to outdo the PA system and invariably sits down right next to you.
They are everywhere, pubs, restaurants, cinemas, in the most remote places.
They always seem to gravitate towards us…..
Nice to know others suffer from the same problems!!!
RE: Ashley’s Airshow Report
Ahhhh, children at airshows……………..
I propose that the powers that be establish a pen, oops sorry, a creche, for parents to leave their kiddywinks in when the flying starts.
For the last couple of years my feet have been stomped on, legs tripped over, chair back been kicked, ears assailed by wailing babies, attempts at video/photos spoilt by kids running around – need I go on??
Why, oh why, do they insist on bringing the kids???
The kids run around with their model planes, plastic guns, playing war, whilst their parents sit blissfully unaware of the slowly increasing feelings of sensible folk nearby to scream at them.
Then the parents stand up and block your view of a formation coming in low and fast, or stand their offspring on chairs so they can see everything – speak incessantly on the mobile phone “We’re at the airshow…WE’RE AT THE AIRSHOW!…I SAID WE’RE AT THE AIRSHOW!!!!”
Perhaps they see the enclosures as some sort playground area for the kids? It’s even worse in the Gold Pass enclosure – you pay £50 for the relative comfort of this only to find Joe Public has brought his whole tribe with him. AAARRRGGGHHHHH……………….
I will say this – last year there was a young lad, 8 or 9 yrs old, who was an absolute gent. He was with his dad, and grandad, and spent a good part of the afternoon bringing his grandad drinks and food. And he sat quietly watching the displays, talking with his GD. A better behaved, polite youngster I have rarely seen.
So in closing, I’m not opposed to parents bringing their children to airshows, after all how do you encourage interest otherwise, but to abandon them to their own devices is irresponsible, and selfish, to the other people who have paid good money to spend an afternoon enjoying living breathing history.
A little parental control is needed………..
control the parents!! 🙂
RE: Life was hard 60 years back
Hah, they’ll never get their hands on Shove Ha’penny!!!!
RE: Planning Disaster – Act Now!!
I can see the headlines now :-
Stand Off at Duxford Continues
After 6 weeks of failed attempts by Council officials, baliffs, Police and the SAS the lone protestor, who will only be identified as “Ashley”, is still holding out against plans to redevelop the Officers Mess site of Duxford and turn it into a out of town shopping precinct. The authorities thought that their offer for unlimited Spitfire polishing opportunities had been accepted by “Ashley” if she ended her occupation, but they fear she may have been influenced by members of ‘The Forum’, a shadowy organisation operating over the internet………………

RE: Planning Disaster – Act Now!!
Less than 8 days to get your letter of objection in the post about this change to the planning system.
I’m a little disappointed it has only had 2 replies and only 36 views.
If Cambridgeshire District Council decided to build houses on Duxford airfield, or demolish the buildings on the Officers Mess site, then I could hear the cries of outrage from here.
If this underhand change goes through then it may happen and your voice would not be allowed to be heard.
Having used my right to object to schemes I felt strongly about I know how strong a united front can be. Letters of objection WORK.
This right is at risk of being removed forever!
Please don’t just read this and think, “it doesn’t matter”.
You could be affected next.
Just a reminder:-
What’s happening to planning?
The Government is planning a radical shake up of the planning system. It will favour big business by slashing the rights of local people to have a say about decisions which could wreck their environment.
Go to http://www.planningdisaster.co.uk and download a letter to Tony Blair before it is too late!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have until March 18th to write!

RE: That BF-109
I’ve never been any good at these 3D pictures – what is meant to be?
😀
RE: Planning Disaster – Act Now!!
Thanks guys – this is more important than I think a lot of folk realise. It’s almost a new Battle for Britain……….
RE: Why on earth……….?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-03-02 AT 09:16Â PM (GMT)]Perhaps they saw the pics of a Seafire Mk45 and thought well it’s a Spit!!! We have the engine lets just shove it in!
Just seen the article and notice in the same piece that the James Smith Seafire FR.47 is being restored at Ezell Aviation. Perhaps they were just trying to see if it would fit!!!
