    RE: TV Alert!!

Another one that might be of interest –
    Matter of Fact – BBC2 7.30pm Tuesday 5 March
The Decoy Men – story of the dummy airfields set up to lure enemy bombers away from real targets. Sixty years on those who worked on the decoys reveal how they encouraged the Luftwaffe to actually bomb them.
This is a regional programme, East Anglia, so some of you may miss it!

    RE: The poor old DC3/Dakota/C47/Skytrain

I would have fond memories of my first ever flight in a DC3 – but alas I was only 3 months old!!! It was a flight from London to Wick (N Scotland) in 1956 when my parents moved the family north. There is a photo somewhere (my sister has it I believe) of us all disembarking at Wick Airport, myself wrapped up and being carried by my mother!! If I can I will get a scan of it to post here!

On a slightly similar note, the VC10 at Duxford was the actual aircraft my wife flew back from Singapore in, as a child, on returning to the UK. Her father says he has a flight logbook with the aircrafts callsign, given to my wife as a memento of the flight. When we went aboard at our last visit to Duxford and I told her this, she said she had a feeling of sadness at actually being on this old aircraft she flew back in. A quick phone call to her dad confirmed this. So Duxford now has something a little special for her.

RE: Salvage Squad – 11 Feb

It turned out to be quite an interesting programme. The Gyro-Plane squadron was obviously a very well kept secret, although I’ve seen references to the example in the Helicopter Museum mentioned before. So someone must have researched its history.
I’m surprised that the Gyro-plane isn’t more popular. It seems to be a relatively cheap way to get flying. They seemed to be popular after the 007 film, but seemed to have died off. Has the powered hanglider taken over from it, or were they too difficult to fly?? That can’t be the case if they can be flown hands and feet off the controls!!!
And as for Ken Wallis, well I hope I’m that sprightly at 85!!!

Well, the BBC totally threw me – looked at the start time 9pm and saw the news was on at 10.20, so set the video to record for 1hr 30mins –
    8o770>< !!!!
    – it was in two parts. :+
Thanks BBC, why not put the chuffin’ news at an earlier time instead of splitting a drama??? So by the time I realised, I’d missed about 40 mins of the second half.
This happens all the time now, since the BBC decided to go head to head with ITN for the 10pm news slot.
Needless to say I’m popular with the wife for cocking up the recording.

    Anyone happen to tape it????

RE: Message for Mr. Russ Snadden

I remember the day only too well – for some reason I had wandered down to the M11 end of the crowdline, on the way back to the car (it was parked behind the Superhangar in the days when traffic control didn’t direct southbound traffic onto the Officers Mess parking areas) and was stood watching the last flight of Black 6 with a feeling of real anger and disappointment. Anger at the fact that the MOD was grounding a unique aircraft which had been rescued by the sheer stubborness and graft of Russ and the Black 6 team, and disappointment that it’s superb engine growl would never be heard again.

I watched as Black 6 took off, on what was a very windy day and I think about on the limits of anything flying that day. I also watched in a heightening state of concern as an unusual puff of smoke was spotted coming from the exhausts followed by a short and fast recovery onto the remaining runway. It was obvious something was wrong and the pilot was flying by the seat of his flightsuit and his speed was way too high to stop in the runway length left to him. The feeling of horror was all around me as I’m sure everyone thought “Oh sh*t, the M11……..”
In what I still consider to be an piece of great flying he lifted off again and hopped the M11, only to come to grief in the fresh furrows of that field.
A feeling of relief that perhaps it’s not that bad was crushed as news came that the aircraft was upside down with the pilot trapped. It later emerged he refused to be cut out to save anymore damage to the aircraft.
I’ve read the accident report and with hindsight perhaps things should have been done differently, but accidents happen and but for the pilots decisionmaking, Black 6 may have been spread all over four lanes of the M11.
Black 6 was going to be grounded after that flight. That was the only bad decision in my books. It is a unique aircraft, and should be flown and cared for.
Theories about deliberately damaging the aircraft are X-File fodder.
Hopefully, one day soon, the sound of a DB605 will echo around Duxford again.

I think a lesson from this is that the field on the otherside of the M11 needs to be reserved for any further emergencies such as this. If it has already been so designated, then well done.
The M11 should never have been allowed to disect the runway like it did. For the sake of a few hundred yards of motorway it could easily have skirted the end of the original airfield. But then Duxford wasn’t what it is today. Europe’s No.1 flying museum.

Spitfire Squadron – seen it before on the History Channel!!!
I was a bit disappointed that it was not a “new” programme but a repeat. Never mind, I’m sure the non-Sky viewers enjoyed it. (Typical, I get Sky to watch stuff like that – something lacking on terrestrial TV and what happens????)

Commando was worth watching – if only for the poignant moment at the end where the little silver box was returned. Have to make a note to watch the rest of the series.

I’m all for you posting piccies, but is there any chance you can edit the size of the picture you’re posting. I’m sure a smaller picture would use up less bandwidth or whatever the technical term is. It’s a good facility to have and it would be a shame to lose it due to the size of files being posted.
    Just a thought…….

It looked a really fantastic gathering and I for one hope the predictions that it’ll be the last time that many Hunters fly together.

    Must see on TV

Caught Airshow 2001 on Discovery Wings this evening. Great shots of 15 Hunters in the air together, and in cockpit camera footage. It looked a really fantastic gathering and I for one hope the predictions that it’ll be the last time that many Hunters fly together.

Also Battle Stations on History featured the Mustang………
