Main as in first line, LCA is more of a LIFT second line aircraft.
that’s simply your (erroneous) opinion. otherwise you will be able to post proof for that statement won’t you ? 😉
The Indians Navy’s main carrier fighter aircraft is going to be the Mig-29, not the LCA though
define ‘main’. IN has ordered 45 Mig-29k’s(4 of them 2 seaters) and 40 NLCA’s.
even assuming you are correct, how does that make the sea gripen relevant to IN ?
I see two other possibilites.
India: Going with sea Gripen would allow the Indians to keep the smaller Vikrant hull for CATOBAR IAC-2/3 and provide a path for Vikrant herself to be refitted CATOBAR later in life. It would be much less expensive than the twin engine options to operate
I take it you haven’t heard of the NLCA.
I haven’t heard of IR R-77.
considering it is not a proper fighter, it doesn’t even have a radar in this version I consider the price too high. it’s a good aircraft but should cost within 15-20 mil. twinblade, it can’t do air patrol or replace the mig-21 or f-4. in effect it’s a modern equivalent of the hawk.
India might license produce the python-5 so less reason to go on that road. astra is a start, a stepping stone to things more ambitious.
I don’t deny your point, I am a big fan of IIR based AAM systems. I haven’t heard about aesa based seeker for astra but then I have heard next to nothing about it, so who knows which direction they will take. money shouldn’t be the biggest problem.
Like R-40, Astra is a BVR IR guided missile.
Unlike R-40, Astra does not possess a huge warhead for killing supersonic B-70 bombers or huge, archaic 1960s vintage guidance electronics package.
Instead, Astra’s small warhead appears to be sized to defeat tactical airplanes and modern electronics shrink the size of the guidance package allowing use of a smaller aerodynamically efficient missile airframe and motor.
But the article contains inadequate information on missile speed, trajectory shaping (or not), midcourse corrections, sensor focal plane array size, and other stuff we like to see in an aviation enthusiasts’ forum.
Astra vs Mica IR anyone? Challenge, challenge…Hello Bueller?…anyone out there?
typical rookie mistake in first line. discussion is pointless after that. when you start making authoritative statements about a project without knowing even its basics, you risk making a fool of yourself, as you have done here. :diablo:
at the minimum read the wiki article on a topic before creating elaborate theories on it, here, start with the first line. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astra_%28missile%29 even that would be educational for you.
miniature version of r-40, a missile with 60 km range is supposed to have a range of 80 km ?
wow, that’s some logic. not to mention it looks like nothing like the acrid. or that India never operated the r-40.
so the P3C orions were to track taliban submarines ? what about those with hawkeye packages ?
forget the politics, jawad, can you give us a final tally on aircraft damaged ?
2 orions + unidentified aircraft damaged or just 2 orions ?
if someone just blindly believes what is said to him, it doesn’t make him informed. 😉
If you don’t like what he has to say thats your problem.
or may be he says what his readers (primarily in the west) want to hear ?

with all due respect leiven doesn’t have a friggin’ clue, some of the things he says are childishly naive and uninformed.
but please guys, do not discuss US afghan policy here. I don’t want to get yet another locked thread.
marchinko’s book is a real eye-opener. but then US mainland is relatively secure and bases have low impetus to invest a lot in perimeter security and the like. if they or any decent military decides to do so, it is not as hard as it is made out to be.
also, let’s not forget few terrorists would have the skill level or innovation of marchinko’s men.
You’re forgetting, these planes were allready in part (1/3 to 1/4) paid for by US military aid money.
so what ? if the planes have been lost in an anti-US attack, it is america’s responsibility to make good the losses ?
thanks jawad. I thought rangers were in the operation too ?
