But don’t you think they would want to do some fighting themselves? I think I’d rather have the Iraqi police and military taking care of these stupid insurgents, so they don’t have a stupid excuse for even existing unlike they do now with fighting US.

Many Iraqi insurgents are attacking Americans and other Westerners because they want them off their soil, what would they do if the Iraqi Military and Police was in control?

Last i heard, BAE was pushing saudis to buy 50 typhoons in a deal worth over around $4.5, which also including upgrading their existing tornadoes. Wot comes of it, i guess would depend on internal saudi situation and oil prices as well as saudi-US relations in future.

Let’s hope thay it does happend just for the Tornado

If this is true, it would really be a mess because the other countries of consortium aren’t going to sit around while the British attempt to sell off theirs.

True, though they wouldn’t be able to do much

Germany and Italy are complaining even before this report. If everyone in the consortium is out to cost their losses what commitment to the plane is there?

The chances of Singapore, S Korea and Norway buying the planes are almost nil. Unless the terms are extremely good.

The EF would have to be sold off at a massive discount to make it worthwhile because Singapore is dependent on US security assurance and mostly buy US and Korea already has signed off on the F-15K with offsets being delivered to S Korean companies.

Norway is part of the JSF partnership in spite of recent grousing (and the EF would face a plane in the Gripen that costs only half as much if Norway did turn away from JSF.)

I really don’t know about the report. This is too extreme in view of the likely reactions from the UK’s EF partners and the low probability of (moneyed) buyers at any rate. There is absolutely no upside in declaring that Britain will attempt to sell its EFs.

I guess the Italian lease of the F-16 was a warning sign.

Uhh the Korean deal is done, why you mentioning it right now? I am not sure about Norway but if they do get to pick between the EF2000 and the Gripen I am sure the will go for the EF2000 just because it’s more capable and they could easily afford it. Gripen is much inferior to the F-35 and EF2000 is somewhere there.

I don’t think EF2000 will be scrapped, there is nothing much better to replace it, what will Germany replace all it’s F-4s and other jets with? What will Spain replace all it’s Hornets, F-5s and other jets with? Wha will…….

You see my point, too much is riding on this project. It would be way too stupid to cancel the plane now just because of a little glitch with the computers.

Besides, they don’t bneed 40 F-15s or 160 F-16s, they need attack helicopters to fight insurgents and they also need transport/utility helicopters for support of police and special forces.

Why do they always bitch at the program for cost overruns and delays? AFAIR It was after the cold war their changing requirements that heavily delayed the program and thats where the cost overrruns came in. It took them forever to just set their own requirements then it took them forever to agree on them.

Why not? If India has the money and enough training aircraft I am sure they can deliver those in time, there are over 1bn Indians, I am sure there will be tons of people joining IAF by 2010.

    I highly doubt it
1)Costs way too much, unless all those are all second hand including the F-15s and Apaches.
2)It would take a while to set it up, at least 5 years, given the security in Iraq, the reconstruction and not to mention switching from Soviet/Russian equipment to American will not be so fast.

Well LCA and these new M2K-5s will replace the Mig-21s and Mig-23s, however the older Mirage-2000s and Mig-29s will stay probably no longer than 2015, then LCA, Su-30MKI and these new 100+ M2K-5s will serve past 2020. PAK-FA will also be bought though probably to replace the older M2Ks and Mig-29s by the time they are ready to leave around 2015.

yes as it seemed it was unaffordable to France. How much did it cost though?

Instead of naming planes after evil things like dragons, I think planes should be named after benevolent things, like Biblical figures:

    The F-14 Jesus
    The F-15 Moses
    The F-16 St. Paul
    The F/A-18 Jebediah
    The F/A-18E Super Jebediah
    etcetera

    LOL nice one.

Yahhh after all teh M2K is a much better striker. And if they can get all the stand off weapons with it then it will be a kickass striker.

Yahh but look at Bulgaria’s budget. It’s true that the new NATO members have problems but look at the other members that have been in NATO for a while. I think Canada is not bad but they are getting worse and worse and the military is being depleted slowly by the ruling gov’ts and that includes the AF.

i think this topic needs to be discussed more..

I always thought M2K2 offer more diversity in mission roles, especially when it already is tested for JDAM, and other precision A2G roles and some limited maritime strike with the Exocet..

but seem like the Gripen is catching up with Spice, Taurus, etc..
what is more that the main disadvantage of Gripen (the swedish law against exporting weapon to countries at war) and American components may be reduce with BAe’s help and incorporating S.African+Israeli weapons and offering variety to what it can carry (correct me on details here).

i’m interested in range figures for variety of load out and type of missions.

That is why I would kind of prefer the M2K over the Gripen.
The Gripen is probably a better plane, they are about the same price to buy if you look at the latest M2K prices sold to various countries, and in some cases the Gripen was much cheaper like in the Brazilian deal where Gripen was offered for 50mn and M2K for about 75mn.
