******, I didn’t know that! Didn’t realise BHX had a stand big enough for a 773! And I’m booked on the A330 flight tomorrow evening! 🙁 Oh well, at least I’ve flown on a 773ER before!

    Good stuff…

BTW, do you know why Emirates are scheduling 77W equipment (777-300ER) on the lunchtime service at BHX at the moment?

    In order they are:

    1. Bristol – Lulsgate
    2. Bristol – Filton
    3. Kemble (clue are the 146s and 747s just noticable on the airfield, plus the Britannia)
    4. Morton in the Marsh (disused, now the national fire school – there’s a Viscount at the top of the airfield for evacuation training)
    5. Nottingham East Midlands

Well done… number 4 was very tricky! The pics were taken from a PA-28 at 4000′, enroute Dunkeswell to Nottingham-EMA.

Andy, a question about A.Net screening if you don’t mind. Does only one person look at the photo then accept/reject it or quite a few?

Nope, takes three screeners to say a photo is OK before its added to the database. The good thing is that this goes some way to ensuring consistancy. The bad thing is that two screeners could say a photo is OK, and if the third says its no good the photo gets blown out – one “no” overrides any number of “yes”

Sorry, I don’t really care for it – the fence spoils it

Maybe cuz Evergreen have actually recently flown a 747 fire bomber and conducted some demos… Seeing as the project is now a reality, seems reasonable to debate it again,

The primary purpose of heavy air tankers is not to direcly extinguish fires – in fact, dropping large quantities of retardant directly onto a fire will often just “blow” the fire outwards from the drop zone and cause it to spread. The heavy tankers usually lay down a barrier of retardant (its a mixture of water and chemicals that actually sticks to trees and such like) on the area immediately surrounding a fire, and thus prevents the fire spreading – the fire effectively burns itself out as all the combustable material in the area already burning is consumed.

One of the benefits of the smaller tankers (up to P-2 Neptune size, etc) is / was that they could get into fairly confined areas – canyons etc – to drop on fires that often occur in such areas. Clearly the 747 tanker will not be as manoueverable but would have benefits wetting large unburned areas somewhat more quickly than conventional tankers could do it.

Are they sensitive about photographing Signature’s apron (Very nice place btw) , or their Neighbour’s apron and its red and white 737s ? 😉

If you photograph Signature’s apron, you’re likely to get accosted by the law and asked to move on – biz jets are sensitive in Las Vegas as most big corporates don’t want their execs photographed on what might appear to be “free” junkets!

If you phogograph the nearby apron with the red and white 737s and Beech 1900s I’ve no idea what happens – no one who’s done that has ever been seen again! 😀

No timetable for freight flights is published due to problems with the local anti-airport lobby. However the full Nottingham East Midlands Airport (N-EMA) passenger flight schedule is availabe on the web…

Go to http://www.tvas.info and then click on the link in the CENTRE item on the right had side of the webpage (the second item on in the “Society Update” list). You’ll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it.

If you’re going to stop at IGM (its off the freeway just as you come into the city from Flagstaff, well before the turn for Las Vegas – you should see the a/c off on your right as you come down the slope towards Kingman, but stay on the freeway until you see the airport sign) try and make it in the afternoon as the ramp is more or less north-south oriented and the landside is west, so photos will be far better after midday. Kingman to Las Vegas is about 100 miles, but allow a couple of hours to drive it as the bit over the dam is very slow – you might even want to stop at the dam as many tourists do.

There’s more wingtip clearance on that Tupolev that might appear from that photo. Whilst crab and kick is preferred by many with underslung engines, wing down doesn’t have to be an issue even in a 737NG:

About the best airport in the USA. There’s a dedicated parking lot on Sunset Bvd along the south side of the airport (Sunset is less than a mile south of the Luxor) where you can even tune the car radio to ATC. There’s a fence there though, so photography needs care but the sun is favourable all day. At the end of the airport on Sunset there’s a strip mall where you can park and take approach shots. Or you can park on the top floor of the terminal parking garage and photograph from there, especially if they are using the north/south runways.

The good thing is that LVPD know about spotters and photographers and you won’t get any hassle from officialdom, expect maybe if you start pointing your camera at too many bizjets on the Signature ramp that is at the corner of Tropicana – photographing bizjets on their ramp is a bit of a no-no, but of course its no problem if they’re taking off or landing.

The bad news is that at this time of year the light in Las Vegas is appauling – the sun is way too high so you end up with airplanes with very bright tops and very dark lower surfaces. Go out early and/or late when the sun is lower to avoid this. Finally, Las Vegas is usually VERY hot at this time of year – not good for photographers both from a personal point of view and because of the heat haze. Again, go out early or late to avoid this.
