he rates UA as the worst of the lot!

Ah well… I’m flying a UA 777-200 in business class again to SFO tomorrow… Personally I quite like UA in both Y-class (E+ makes a huge difference) and in J-class – I admit that their business class isn’t as good as VS Upper, but then again the round trip was under £1900 compared to nearly £5000.

According to the latest AL, ‘DH and ‘DI are due to go to Inter Express (Turkey?) on four year leases.

I’ll add that when it comes to comparing full service airlines, I will often pay a limited premium to fly with some airlines over others – this is directed towards my preference for Star Alliance airlines on which I will pay a premium to get frequent flyer miles, lounge access and a much better chance of an upgrade.

Price is certainly a consideration, but not the only factor.

More important than ticket price is overall price, and convenience. Example – I recently visited Hamburg. BA CitiExpress from BHX was £109 round trip all included. Ryanair from STN was £0.99 plus tax one way and £2.99 plus tax back. But given that I’d have to drive to STN, that the Ryanair flight was so early I’d want to stay at STN the night befire, parking was more expensive at STN, I’d arrive not at HAM but at someplace more than an hour away by bus and have to pay for that too… Bottom line was that Ryanair was actually more expensive (and far less convenient) than BA. That’s what the gullible casual punter doesn’t get about Ryanair and the likes.

I’ll go further and say that within reason, for me price is a secondary consideration to convenience, facilities and service, reliability, timing etc. I won’t fly on Ryanair at any price, because I’m not prepared to take the risk on being messed around or stranded if things do go wrong. For a reasonable price premium, I’ll gladly fly [for example] Lufthansa short haul over a low-fare carrier to get better located departure / arrival airports, better timing, better in-flight service, access to airport lounges, pre-assigned seating, more convenient timing, priority checkin, and very importantly better backup if the wheels fall off.

For me, low-fare carriers are the transport provider of last resort to be used only (a) where a full service carrier doesn’t go where I need to go or when the full service carrier is hopelessly inconvenient, or (b) when the full service carrier is charging very significantly more than the low-fare carrier.

UA956 was bloody awful on 19th of December. The aircraft is very umcomfy, the main film was “Kindergarten Cop” which was analogue quality.

“Will passenger ‘Victor Meldrew’ please make himself known…”

UA has multiple move channels on all longhaul a/c except the 747-400 (which isn’t used on JFK-LHR). Either you did not fully use the facilities available to you, or you are embellishing the story for some reason…

Even if you float, if the sharks don’t get you (in warm water) the ice cold north Atlantic surely will! 🙂

Seriously, if the lifejacket gives me one more minute afloat, and if in that minute I can get to a liferaft, then I’ll take the lifejacket thankyou. As such, I think that they hold a fairly remote but non-the-less tangible possiblility of preserving life and thus are justified.

No doubt also, the seat cushions can be uses as flotation devices, for an additional fee.

Well that’s how US airlines do it on their domestic-ish fleets – the cushion as a floatation device that is, not charging for them! 😮

If Ryanair a/c now don’t have life jackets under the seats, I’m not surprised. Given Ryanair’s modus-operandi, no doubt that if an emergency occurs standard procedures are for the crew to sell or rent them to passengers who want them 🙂

UA transatlantic Y-class is pretty much of a muchness – pretty standard US carriers offer. Pitch is fair (32″ I believe – better than VS!), seats are 2+5+2, 777s and 767s but NOT 744s have multi-channel seat back PTVs (not VOD), food is “chicken or pasta” and you pay for alcoholic drinks ($5 or £3) – at least they don’t charge for headsets like some US airlines do.

UA have the front of the main/economy cabin configured as “Economy Plus” – 36″ pitch instead of 32″. These seats are available either (a) by paying extra on the day or (b) are free on a first come first served basis to passengers who pay full economy fare or anyone with silver or gold status in any Star Alliance frequent flyer program. Economy plus is THE main reason why I like UA transatlantic – being gold in both BMI and United FFPs, I get the extra room for free every time I travel. If you don’t qualify for Economy Plus, you can always be cheeky and ask at checkin – they won’t allocate you E+ in advance unless you qualify for it, but if they don’t have that many who qualify you may get E+ on the day.

One other thing to watch out for (or more correctly listen out for) on UA is channel 9. Channel 9 on audio on all UA a/c is USUALLY live ATC (but it is at pilot discretion so sometimes its switched off – ask the flight attendants to ask the captain if he’d mind having it on if you would like to try it and its off). If you do listen to channel 9, be aware its gate-to-gate and they do let you use the headphones during taxi out and taxi in. UA/TED are the only airline in the world with live ATC at each seat.

UA have their own terminal at JFK (which only a few other airlines use) and my experience is that if the LHR flight is on time immigration is usually fairly quick.

That’s about all there is to say really.

I’m not into writing down numbers, but I certainly take photos of aeroplanes when I can – I make no appology for doing that, and by way of pointing out that photographing aeroplanes can be a rewarding hobby in its own right, a single 35mm slide of mine taken around five years ago has just sold for $700 (that will nicely pay for a few hours in the PA-28, thank you!). I also write for magazines from time to time although that is no where near as lucrative as selling pictures, the best market for which is commercial not publications.

However, having lurked around the airport from time to time during the process of taking said pictures (as well as during my frequent visits to the flying club over the last 11 years), I’ve bumped into a fair number of local spotters. Yes, there is one who is apparently known as “The Trogg” who I wouldn’t ask, but for the most part the spotters around the airport are reasonable people and almost all who I have asked HAVE taken flying trips with me (and paid for lunch!). I also recall a guy who came into the club asking about lessons a while back – unbidded, we offered to take him to Conington for lunch, an invite which he accepted (and he paid for lunch!), and which was appreciated by both him and the club as they felt it was a good way of increasing his interest in learning to fly – I guess we didn’t scare him then!

Even though we may think we’re at least safe, I think that from a lay-man’s view motivation to fly has to be pretty high for someone to accept a trip and jump into a small aeroplane with someone who they have never met before.

When I worked at British Midland, I used to get the slot allocations from ACL each time the coordination meetings took place – very interesting they were too. We used to do analysis with them to see what free runway and terminal capacity was still available, which would help us with future slot requests. Sadly, as has been said, actual allocations are not in the public domain.

That’s taken from the park at the end of Myrtle Avenue – probably the most well known photo spot at LHR!

For once, I don’t see any major issue with what Ryanair are doing… Firstly, it occurs to me that its not BHX so much that they’re after, rather its BA Connect. Ryanair don’t do much out of BHX, so its natural that if they want to encourage people to fly with them rather than with BA punters are going to have to fly from EMA – I doubt that the free flights they were giving away were on EasyJet or BMIBaby, so its really a Ryanair promotion rather than an EMA promotion. Secondly, all they are doing is promoting their own product adjacent to a location where the competition operates from – such advertising is not uncommon in this country, and happens not only in airlines but in many other industries too.

God a trip to Phoenix, wish I could be saying the same.

Yup, and someone else is paying – UA to SFO, a couple of days in the Bay area (sadly mostly working, although I have friends there that I will be seeing in the evenings), then PHX for two days with HP/US. And UA have “The Dukes of Hazzard” on IFE this month – sad I know, but I’ve been wanting to watch that, or maybe its just Jessica Simpson I’ve been wanting to watch!!! 😀

are you man or mouse? 😉

Its got nothing to do with that… I’ll admit that the photo is good and that INN looks like a great place for piccies, but I just don’t DO cold 🙁

For example, BBC says for the next five days max temp in Innsbruck is +1C, minimum is -21C. I think I’ll stick to my trip to Phoenix next week – max +22C!
